Hi there! I am Joseph.
I have been an immigrant / expat living in central Portugal along with my beautiful girlfriend Mariana for seven years now.
Together Mariana, my father Clinton and myself, would like to show you a bit of the daily goings on around our Portuguese farm / homestead / smallholding and all of the work we are doing whilst renovating, starting building projects, working with our livestock, DIY and trying to grow our little families own food!
In this episode we welcome you to join us in late Summertime as we are given a tour around our friends farm, which is for sale, in a rural mountain village in central Portugal.
We start the virtual tour by introducing ourselves on a beautiful private track leading down to the farm as we explain the location of this wonderful gem of a farm and a little about the surroundings and local amenities.
We begin by walking up the short private shingle track, which gives fantastic access to the farm, just a few metres away from a tarmac road. Then we step onto the property itself, the first thing we see as we look around is electricity posts connecting to this farm, then we walk down towards the granite building on the land. It is a 48m2 building with a garage that is also 48m2 attached to the back. It can be increased in size though to make it a larger building if needed.
Mariana and I both walk inside the little building and take a look around at all of the old tools and instruments for agriculture. There are lots of signs that this place once had a lot of life in it, I hope this comes back to this beautiful place.
After the building we walk past the olive grove, which has a few hundred olive trees, all mature and in need of a prune. Then we see the large hand dug well, an amazing feat which was created by the current owner along with his brothers and father. The steps leading down into the well are like something that leapt off the page of a book! The farm certainly has a lot of water, including three wells, a few springs and two nice sized ponds (of course the water level is low right now as we are coming out of the worst drought Europe has seen for decades.
There are numerous healthy, fruit trees planted around the farm, including but not limited to orange, apricot, loquat, olive, grape, quince, apple, pear, fig & more!
As we walk along the farms boundary line we can see lots of well cared for mature vines, this would produce a good few hundred litres of wine every year!

But Joseph, the process of transferring the wine only took a few seconds! 😉 This farm looks like a good property, not abandoned for a long time. It won’t be overwhelming to bring it back. The house is another matter.

That is a lovely piece of property. It would require pruning the olive trees after harvesting the olives. A temporary shelter could be erected until the house is made habitable. I agree with you on turning the tiny cottage into a vacation rental. The renter would have beautiful views of the olive trees and vines next-door. It’s very kind of you to offer your time like this to your friends. I wish I wasn’t so advanced in years, or I would take on the challenge. The best to you and your beautiful family.

Hi there Laurie! Winter can be cold, depends where you come from though of course! Drops to zero Celsius for a few weeks, have about as long summer as we do winter, three months of each roughly!

Before you can do that you would definitely need a permission from the local county, or municipality. Normally you can rebuild buildings like that or change them but within the existing footprint. My guess would be for a 1400 square feet new house, around 150 thousand. Depending on how it is finished, bathroom kitchen etcetera.
