What an incredible warrior and leader. Have been thoroughly impressed by his ability over the years to raise finance and lead high performing teams. The culture within ETNZ is incredible, Grant should be given more kudos for all he's achieved, but it's probably testament to his uncompromising drive to win that he's not on a number of people's Xmas card list! Would be fabulous to have the cup back in Auckland again. Here's hoping!

Great interview with an understated legend. Skippered a whitbread maxi at 32, been around the world eight times, picked up the pieces of a broken cup team and turned them into legacy champions. Toughest competitor you'll find anywhere. Proud to be a kiwi watching this. Comforting to know Auckland could still be an option for future defence.

Who is to say it'll be Auckland? After what recently happened in one of NZ's After the recent SailGP Regattas resulting in cancelled Races, Auckland might have too many Dolphins able to make an appearance that could scupper the whole event. Global Broadcasting Rights & Timings are also things they will have to consider.

Couldn’t be any prouder to be a kiwi listening to him speak about the send off by Ngati Whatua Orakei. Loyalty to his family and loyalty to his team drive the success from what he was saying. For a Kiwi living in London and seeing the win in Barcelona, it was a fantastic experience enjoyed alongside so many other sailing enthusiasts. Great interview to get a bit more behind the scenes knowledge and GD. Would be happy to get back to Auckland for 2027 final as well.

Great interview. Great leader and ambassador. 🎉 Sure, fiscally you understand the reasons for taking the cup off shore but you get the feeling he would never do a Coutts or Butterworth and give the middle finger (in my humble opinion) to the country. I also love how the Campaign has embraced Te Ao Māori in their efforts. After all.... It's who we are 🎉🎉 kia kaha e Rangatira.

Good interview. Grant is right to give a lot of kudos to the fact that a portion of the Americas Cup success is due to the kiwi X factor, because there’s something in this. And though the kiwi thing is very small, compared the overall whole of our Americas Cup campaigns, nevertheless it’s a foundational ingredient, thats working, and it’s of such great worth, it should never be underestimated. Therefore all kiwis should recognise that they have got the goods. All Kiwis feel very proud once again with this wonderful win in Barcelona, and could listen to Grant Dalton for hours, eating it up with a spoon. He could talk for days and we’d still be there listening intently to everything word. A great spokesperson whom we are all very proud of. And as we are a such a small country from down under, we naturally want to prove ourselves to the big guys out there. And by winning the Americas Cup 3 times in a row, we prove that we are as good as them, arguably better, and this is a confidence booster. However we know that those who know of this incredible achievement of 3 wins in a row, winning the cup 3 times, we know that they must be concluding that these kiwis have got something special going on. And knowing that this is how they are seeing us, we therefore can hold our heads up high, but modestly and certainly not bombastically. This latest win of Grant and his Team NZ is another great confidence booster for us, because it really gets us believing in ourselves more and more, and that’s good. There’s nothing wrong with that. Kiwis get all sorts of top jobs overseas because of their high ability levels and wise savvy. And kiwis would do well to recognise this by realising they do actually have the goods. For instance it’s debatable that without the kiwi Sir Keith Park, the Battle of Britain would not have been won. And this is glaringly obvious to anyone who reviews the facts in an unbiased way. But because we don’t blow a trumpet it’s largely unknown by many New Zealanders. And that’s ok because we don’t need to Ram it others. That’s not our style. The kiwi Greg Forman was the former CEO of Walmart’s American division. They chose Greg instead of choosing a candidate from 330 million Americans. Why? It’s because he was the best man for the job. And this should speak volumes to all aspiring kiwis. There is the possibility that Team NZ could retain the Cup for years to come, provided we stay cool and don’t jinx ourselves by becoming too intoxicated. I have sometimes wondered if God Himself is actually helping to make it happen, deeming us to be the most deserving. I am proud of our national anthem in which God gets more than a mention, not just because a relative of mine wrote it, but I can see it’s the smart move. Why not ask God to be on your side. But we must be extremely careful not to jinx God out of the picture by taking His name in vain as Grant was doing during his interesting interview. Don’t get me wrong. I love Grant and Peter and there’s something wrong with those who don’t love these guys, along with every single person on the team. They have collectively brought honour to New Zealand, known by some as the land of the long white cloud. These guys and gals on Team NZ are great. They are really great people, who deserve our honour which we want to lavish upon them.

Great interview martin. Fingers grossed it comes back to NZ. Dolts is a straight shooter, he doesn't bullshit. It needs the govt, private sector and the Auckland council to buy it. I have been away for 7 years, totally agree with Dolton's perception of how the country is.

Is trues if u having limitless money u want try at all most different design. Then after year hopeless trying out, bringing together what function is even harder💁♂️ Having a plan and following this totally till the end. If loosing then another seen an another things? Team NZ with all designers, strategies and controll system builders are the bottom of winning.

why the other teams cant look at what happened in San francisco and learn the same lesson for free is beyond me. They are all making the exact same mistakes that Team NZ made then and keep making them. Just look at who is steering the boats, that tells you all you need to know. Im pretty sure that the Italians will learn that this time finally

What for? Services to rich people? Get off the grass.
@lovemysport79022 күн бұрын
I don’t totally agree or get the Knighthood lark. Many political, business, entertainment & sports figures get Royal Approval for Services to the Stage, Services to their chosen sport, Services to Politics etc but they have already been paid millions or will make millions in the chosen area of expertise. And then a ‘Hood’ just gives them even more. Whenever England win the Ashes they all get Knighthoods, MBEs, OBEs etc. Why? It is just a series on a regular basis between 2 Countries & they get rewarded for winning a 3 game series, meet the Queen, the Pope, Head of Government etc. Seriously? Has an entire squad of Aussie Ashes Winners ever gotten such accreditation? The ‘Hoods’ are an ‘old skool’ boys network to pat one another on the back & to bring more elite people into their circle. There are exceptions like the very humble Kevin Sinfield who of late who has been doing so much to raise the awareness of MND in late of Doddie Weir, Rob Burrow & Ed Slater. But more people should be like Richie & DC & turn the Royal accolades down while humbly & deservedly accepting NZs equivalent honours.

Imagine if the incredibly motivated and connected people like Grant could turn their energy to the massive existential problems our species are facing instead of sailing stupid little boats around for rich people to get their kicks. Come on guys, why not secure a planet first then we can sail our little hearts out. Sailing could actually be a big part of a happy climate/planet future. Priorities have changed and this shouldn't have to be spelt out. Start by being open about the carbon footprint of your carbon marvels, from design and manufacture to shipping all over the world and then the private jets and monster yachts of your spectators and sponsors. Ineos was one. Check what they are about. Times aren't what they were when this cup was started. Please, at least, read the papers and IPCC reports and see how you can change things with your massive monetary power and knowledge. If you leaders don't give a fuck then aren't we all fucked? And well done for winning, genuinely, you have a special thing going. Next regatta have boats built by hand using wood and craftsmen, document/film the designs and construction and how communities are brought together in the making of them (there are some great examples on line of people doing just this). Don't wait till it's too late to say ok, now I'm ready to work with the planet. Make sailing the future. Wind is a power.

I'm too young to know why Dalton's a divisive NZ character. Why is he?
@woodeez804910 күн бұрын
Perhaps because he has a strong point of view and a clear focus on how to run a business operation. For a pressure cooker-type business to be successful I believe it is essential for a CEO to have the above qualities however as they say "to make an omelet you gotta break a few eggs" and that will ultimately piss a few people off and if that's the price of success so be it.
@phillipmurray172410 күн бұрын
He's definitely a focused, no nonsense and when he needs to be, a ruthless leader with the qualities, skills and nature needed to lead. Ultimately he carries the load and he makes the decisions and stands by them good, bad, indifferent. And sometimes that pisses people off. No way we win without him. 🎉
@deerfootnz9 күн бұрын
Because the NZ press decided they could go after him, and they did quite effectively. Many of the things they criticized him and ETNZ for were dubious at best. They continually and deliberately blur the lines between money going to ETNZ and money to host the event. For example Auckland council hid a major expense in the Americas Cup hosting budget with the cost of cleaning up old the tank farm site, where they put the AC bases. The council would have had to spend that money anyway but chose to put the AC bases there against Dalton & Shoebridges wishes. That money is now reported as spent on the Americas Cup and it's not trivial being tens of millions of dollars. I have seen it reported as anywhere from $40M up to much much more. That's just one example. No wonder it's easier to do this stuff overseas.
