CAN communication with inverter, Current Limiter, Programmable relays, Active balancer... basically an All-In-One perfect BMS??
I also connect the JK Inverter BMS to a ‪@sunsynk‬ Sunsunk Inverter using the CAN bus communication.
In this video we look at what you get int he box, discuss the specs and features, briefly look through the app and what information is displayed on the screen and take a closer look at a few BMS settings like:
Vol. Cell RCV(V) Requested Charge Voltage
RCV Time (H) Requested Charge Voltage Timer
Vol. Cell RFV (V) Requested Float Voltage
RFV Time (H) Requested Float Voltage Timer
SOC-100% Volt. (V) State of Charge 100% reset voltage
SOC-0% Volt. (V) State of Charge 0% reset voltage
Disable PCL Module (When this switch is on, it disables the built-in current limiter)
Charge and Discharge current limit settings
The JK BMS has built-in Bluetooth that connects to the JK BMS App, various Display screen options, Charge and Discharge control, built-in protections for current, temperature and voltage... this JK Inverter Battery Management System (BMS) seems to have it all.

Found this channel just now. Really good content- great job. I'm looking forward to further JK firmware updates to support other inverter brands like Luxpower. Also, I know this will more than likely require a hardware change but would be awesome if JK BMS' had wifi to allow the BMS to be monitored over the internet similar to Daly.

Thanks very much. I'm sure over time they will update and add support for other inverters... let's hope. I guess adding wifi monitoring is possible with a sort of 'wifi adapter' that plugs into the RS485 port, which pulls all the info and uploads to something like home assistant (or the JK app if its hardware made by JK). A couple weeks ago, I remember reading on one of the forums about somebody having programmed an ESP32, which plugs into the BMS RS485 port and draws the BMS info and streams it to Home Assistant... so i guess it could be indirectly monitored through Home Assistant.

It is important to understand the RCV and RFV settings are just requests sent to inverter/charger to adjust the inverter/charger's charge parameters. The inverter/charger is still the master regulating actual charge rate. If inverter/charger does not understand the BMS requests due to inverter/charger not having the proper RS485 or CAN physical interface and matching comm protocol with the BMS, the requests will not be executed by the inverter/charger. The BMS does have a DC to DC converter (big toroid inductor visible) across the charge disable series pass MOSFET's. When charge MOSFET is disabled the DC to DC converter can activate allowing 0 to 10 amps charge into battery. The primary application of this is BMS intended for rack mounted battery packs that may get a battery installed or discharged where it is significantly lower state of charge. Other parallel batteries would push a lot of charge current to the low SoC battery. The DC to DC converter allows a controlled amount of charging current to the low SoC battery. This DC to DC converter can also be helpful near full charge state where too much cell imbalance would cause a full charging shutdown due to a cell overvoltage condition. BMS can fine tune the charge rate down to low level still allowing balancing to continue but preventing a cell overvoltage shutdown by reducing charge rate. There must be comm with inverter/charger to use this because inverter/charger without BMS comm will likely interpret charge current drop off as a fully charged battery and drop inverter/charger down to float mode charging voltage level. During this BMS buck converter charge rate reduction it tells inverter/charger to maintain an absorb voltage level charge voltage.

I set my inverter to lead acid and charge voltage to 58v and float to 54.4V works good for me I get to 3.65v without a problem every battery is balanced. I don't see a need to use comms treat the inverter as a power supply. Some reduce the absorption to 56.4V for longer battery life I like faster charging.

Hello. I also have a battery system on parallel jk bms 150a-2a. I encountered a problem with incorrect current display, I tried to calibrate the device for 20 amps, and in this case, when 20 amps are supplied, the display is correct, but if the current is changed to a smaller value, it shows a significantly lower current. For example, 1.5 amps instead of 2. Or 45 amps instead of 40. Have you had this problem? Is it possible to solve this by replacing the firmware or changing the settings?

Hi Grant, Can you help me confirm a bit about the Dry contact relay settings? I need the BMS to activate the relay at certain SOC % And turn off the relay at certain SOC % Say I want to turn off the inverter Mains input as soon as Battery SOC reaches 70%. And then reconnect to mains as battery reaches 20% SOC. I mainly use solar for power saving. Thanks.
@GrantBurton
@GrantBurton 9 ай бұрын
Hi, I think it may work. The dry contacts are Normally Open (NO). There are three settings for triggering these relays... Trigger, Trigger Value and Release Value. I tried the following -> Trigger set to 'Low SOC' and Trigger Value set to 21 and Trigger Release set to 69, the relay closes when the SOC reaches 20 (i.e. drops below the Trigger Value of 21) and the relay opens again when the SOC reaches 70 (i.e. rises above Release Value of 69). You'll likely have to use a contactor to reliably connect / disconnect mains input over a long period of time.
@ZenInnovations
@ZenInnovations 9 ай бұрын
@@GrantBurton wow thanks for confirming. I'll probably use the dry contact to trigger a 2nd, much beefier relay which can take the mains load comfortably. Then use it to switch mains. Though I wish they should have given low soc as well as high soc trigger to make it even more flexible. BTW one more thing! Can we manually override or switch these relays using the mobile app? Say if I need to activate mains for charging?
@GrantBurton
@GrantBurton 9 ай бұрын
@@ZenInnovations A workaround may be to use the Low SOC triggers to drive another relay with NC contacts... So when the Low SOC relay releases, the additional NC relay loses power and thus closes it's contacts acting like a High SOC trigger? and when the Low SOC relay triggers, the additional NC relay energises thus opening the additional NC relay contacts. Probably easier for JK to just add the feature in software though. I don't think the relays can be manually triggered (like with a software switch)... I'll need to have another look though.

Can't say that I've seen the green wire bundle you are referring to, but if it connects into the heating port plug on the BMS at 02:52 (the plug next to where the balance leads plug into), it could be for the heating pad connections. Not sure why they would all be connected to a single lug though.

Hi Grant, I have Solis hybrid 5KW inverter, and I'm using it with 16 EVE 304 cells and the same (as you are showing) JK inverter BMS with an active balancer. I've been running this setup for the past five months. The JK BMS communicates the state of charge (SOC) to the inverter, but the SOC keeps drifting over time. Here's the issue: even when the BMS indicates a 100% SOC, the voltages drift slightly lower with each cycle. Over the weeks, the SOC gradually drifts, so while it shows 100%, each cell and the overall pack voltage are slightly lower than the previous cycle. If I adjust the battery capacity settings, the BMS resets to 70% SOC, and the inverter charges another 3 or 4 kWh. This SOC drift is frustrating because on cloudy days, my 16 kWh battery effectively only charges to 11 or 12 kWh. The remaining 4 kWh stays uncharged because the BMS incorrectly reports 100% SOC to the inverter. To fully charge the battery, I have to keep changing the capacity settings in the BMS back and forth. Is there a way to use this inverter without CAN communication or by setting it as a generic battery? If anyone else has the same issue or knows a solution, please comment and suggest how to fix this problem. Thanks!
@GrantBurton
@GrantBurton 5 ай бұрын
Hi, are you allowing your battery to fully charge each day... as in reaching the RCV and then holding the RCV for 1 or 2 hours each day? I have heard of the SOC drifting over time when a battery bank is charged and discharged a few times, and isn't fully 'bulk' charged each time... kind of a SOC calculation error that compounds over time... or at least until the next full charge where SOC resets to 100% again according to one of the cells reaching the 100% SOC reset voltage. Does your inverter stop charging your battery when '100% SOC' is reached (whatever voltage that may end up being) or does it charge according to the RCV the BMS sends to the inverter, and only stop charging (or reduce to 'float' charge voltage) when the RCV is reached and the RCV Time is reached / exceeded? Because if it's charging according to RCV, I don't see how the voltage should drift lower with each charge cycle because the charge should be charging the cells up to your specified voltage each time, and not stop charging until it reaches that voltage.... Unless there is something I'm not understanding (I'm no expert though... haha). What is your 100% SOC Voltage, RCV and RCV Time set to? Also what firmware version are you currently using? I think it is better to continue using it with communication as that will give you the most accurate SOC... it's accuracy (or inaccuracy) at the moment will probably still be more accurate than running in 'voltage' mode without communication.

Credit to Andy from Off Grid Garage... I started using the settings he talks about in his videos, but I set my own charge and discharge current limits appropriate for my cells, and over time make small changes to suit my exact setup... but I generally lean towards safe / conservative settings and not settings that run right up against the limits.

I’m not 100% sure what all the requirements for a BMS on an electric bicycle would be but I guess it would work… it basically has all the same functions as the other ‘non inverter’ BMS with a couple of additional features… but I don’t think these extra functions would need to be used. Hi Grant, Good video, all info about this bms is very welcome 👍 Can you confirm the settings data now being stored in flash memory (IF present at the bms at all)? Andy from the offgrid garage posted a warning on this JK BMS systems resetting to li-ion settings after loosing all the data after being shut off for some days. this because the data was stored in RAM. The firmware update changed this in LTO being selected after a "reset" due to being swithed off for some days but nothing beats flash! Did you test two to five of them as two to five different but equal batteries in the Victron Cerbo? Soon, my ordered 40 extra cells will arrive and buying 3 extra 123smartbms BMS systems, each costing € 500 and more is, together with 3 relais or trip fuses, where the jk bms has all inside, kind a of dealbreaker for me. On old firmware the BMS switched back to stock LTO settings when the input parameters made no sense. This was intended by JK. After many concerns they changed the firmware and give a direct warning if you type in stupid values. So you cannot store stupid settings anymore and therefore the BMS does not reset back to base settings.

I'm trying to find out about the bms because as I have a large 24 volt 1300AH battery pack I would like it to work perfectly before investing in the BMS and the victron multiplus II! laurent

Hi Laurent, thanks very much. I've never tested it with a Victron system (can't afford Victron unfortunately), but Andy from @OffGridGarageAustralia has done extensive testing with the JK BMS connected to his Victron system (48v system). I think you need a Cerbo GX to get the communication working between the JK BMS and the Victron System. You'll also need a VE.Can to CAN-bus BMS cable. I think you can also make this cable up yourself if you have the correct tools... Andy explains this pretty well in his videos... you'll just have to scroll through his video list and look for the JK related videos because he has a lot of useful and informative videos.

hello and thanks again for your quick and concrete answer! I'll see with Andy he's very nice! for the victron I'm currently looking to find a way to switch to self-consumption not sure I'll switch to victron because it's very expensive! but maybe there's an equivalent in a reliable inverter? thanks again laurent

Yes it will with a cerbo and a proper communication cable. I have the same JK and Multiplus and it works like a charm. Good Luck.

Thanks for your comment. I also used the previous style (non-inverter JK BMS) without communication for over a year and it also worked great. What inverter are you using?

@@mflo1970 Victron make great quality products. Have you checked that the CAN High and CAN Low wires are going to the correct pins on whatever is handling your communication (probably a Cerbo GX?). I think on the Victron systems, CAN high is on Pin 7 and CAN low is pin 8 but on the JK BMS, CAN high is Pin 4 and CAN low is Pin 5 so a standard ethernet cable won't work. You may have to make up your own cable.

@@GrantBurtonYou can also buy one off Victron. Victron can work with the Pylon protocol. Not sure if JK has Victron specific protocol. BTW loved the video. You sound like you're a professional presenter?

@@mondotv4216 Hi, there is a Victron CAN protocol that can be selected in the JK BMS app... I think it is 004 - Victron_CANbus_BMS_protocol_20170717. Thanks very much for your comment. I'm no professional presenter, just an average guy... but thank you.

Hi, thanks for the info... I think it's only available for the 200A version at the moment? My BMS's are 150A versions so i'll have to wait. I believe Andy said there should be a version 15.33 out soon.

@@GrantBurton I hope all is still working fine, with 3 BMS in parallel, and with Deye. And with the SOC fixer solution :)

Not sure if you missed it in the video? … but at 02:00 I say the model number of the BMS being reviewed (if you have the resolution set high enough and pause the video there, you’ll also be able to zoom into the product label on the BMS, which shows the model number).
