Saw James at Nottinghill Carnival back in 2017. No airs or entourage, he was by himself and someone asked him to pose for a photo, he was really sweet and gracious posed for the snap and exchanged pleasantries and wandered off. Really unassuming...and really handsome ☺

I just watched the 3 rd episode of season 4. I liked that it showed everyone sort of floundering and trying to get settled into life without Sydney. I have always loved the interaction of the characters and it will be fun to see how Will fits in to the village. I was beginning to be a bit disenchanted with Sidney. It was quite obvious that he was deeply questioning his calling and the young civil rights woman and her cause seemed to be just the right catalyst to move him forward to a new life. Also, I just love Leonard and he comes into his own when he fills in. He still needs more confidence but he will get there. As a young woman in the 1950’s. I am keenly aware of the trials and tribulations that we women went through at that time. Seeing Geordie’s wife stepping out into the working world and having experienced what happened to her in the episode many times in my own life I will be watching closely to see if they get it right. It will be hard to watch but it is part of the story of women’s rights and needs to be portrayed accurately.

I'm enjoying more time on Cathy too. Geordie, as a husband, infuriates me a lot though. I think she could do better, but I'd rather if he just smarten up and realize the charming treasure she is. The actor who plays Leonard is a pleasure to watch! As is the actor playing Mrs. C. Their scenes sparkle.

You posted this comment some months back, but I can answer it. It was James Norton’s decision to leave Grantchester and not the scriptwriters. I guess his career was opening up and he didn’t want to be tied to a TV series. Even very recently, though, James has stated how much he misses working on the Grantchester set.

I've so enjoyed the beauty of the locations, the character's relationships and of course the acting. He will be missed so much at playing a layered soul. We are just a year or two away from when war veterans started to be prescribed tricyclic anti-depressants, which if we're honest, could have helped our dear Sidney. I didn't like how they concluded his relationship with Amanda at all, however. It was pretty awful, but perhaps realistic.

Sidney found what he needed in Violet, a woman he could love and share his life's work with. That's why he changed his mind about leaving with Amanda. He would have had to give up his church work, ministry. He told her, " this is who I am." He were would have had to go get a "regular" job to support her and the child and likely their kids. She was used to the high life and Sidney likes living outside of the boundaries. They wouldn't have been happy together in the long run.
@Daniea35 жыл бұрын
@@andreac6024 I really couldn't buy that Violet and Sidney found what they were looking for after what, a week or two together? It was rushed, but I suppose they didn't want to complete the entire season with Sidney/James. Just seemed like Sidney was running away again.

I think the ending was good too. It leaves so much to be flushed out by the imagination, considering the historical times and how America was getting into the thick of the civil rights movement (Dr. King was new on the scene, the freedom rides, sit ins and all were soon to follow) and all the great artists of the time. Sidney would have loved the adventure, the danger, the involvement in ministry (clergy lending their voice to the movement; he would have found several like him, moved by a higher moral calling. He would have been fulfilled). I was worried about them being in Alabama, but that too is significant, as it was one of the center points of the movement; so much was happening there. Plus they could always move. I even think this sense of purpose and work could lead Sidney to stop drinking, as it's too dangerous in Alabama for him to be pissy drunk, while being apart of the civil rights movement. It's no Grantchester. I wished the audience got more screen time with Violet and Sidney together though.

I liked the ending Sidney got, it leaves so much for the imagination to fill in. I expect Sidney would thrive in America, historically it was so much going on then and in a few years to follow with the civil rights movement and music. Sidney would love the adventure, danger. And he found a love he could share his life's work (church ministry) with, while working for a big cause. He would have found a community of other clergy doing likewise. I am disappointed too that he left the show, but it was t in me for him to move on. He'd likely outgrown the role. I didn't think I would be interested in watching anymore without Sidney, but I must say, the new leading man is a good fit. They chose well.

Was able to watch Season 4 eposide 1 twice this past week of Grantchester and sadly I was somewhat disappointed in the storyline. With James Norton gone from the show now I fear the demise of the show but we will just have to wait and see...... In addition the police station seemed to have been moved to a different location and it just looked odd and quite small compared to the larger building it was housed in in previous seasons. I assume Amanda and her husband will not be back on the show and the actor who played Phil, Georgie's side kick at the police station seems to have been replaced with some 17 year old actor who appears totally out of place on the show. Off to episode 2 Sun. night.

It’s still good. They are about to make series 8. It took a while to find their rhythm but I actually prefer the character of the new vicar. Sidney spent too much time smoking and drinking when things were bad snd I think it was getting tired. @andreac60245 жыл бұрын
You hate the ending because your reasoning is lacking. You watched fir 4 years but didn't understand Sidney. He didn't run away with Amanda because he wanted to do church work, stay in ministry and would have had to give that up for her, which ultimately would have made them both unhappy. With Violet he found a woman who he cared for and they could work together. That's what he told her when he asked her to stay in Grantchester, after helping the prostitutes living in the tenement. He also realized that's the first time he felt complete, that's why he told Violet, it's not his world anymore if she's not in it. Gladys Knight song, midnight train to Georgia comes to mind, but it was after their time (a few years later). Also, I can imagine Sidney thriving in Alabama, he would have danger, a work/ministry he believes in (and find a community of other clergy doing the same dangerous work at the time). Also, historically it was quite a time to be alive in America (I wasn't even a thought to be born yet, but based on historical reports). The civil rights movement was heating up, there were sit ins, Dr. King was new on the scene, there were soon to be freedom rides, etc. And the artistry of music at the time. Rock & Roll was challenging Jazz for top spot, but Sidney's favorite, jazz had yet to deliver some big moments (not conceding to rock & roll without a fight). Miles Davis was to release his masterpiece album, "kind of blue" in 1959. Sidney would have found much to love in America at the time and years to follow. He may even stop drinking, as it would be too dangerous to be a drunk, considering he would in the in the opposition to a racist structure. Maybe they'd move from Alabama, it would have been so dangerous for him to be living Violet, but Alabama is significant because it was the heart of the civil rights movement at the time.

I do not understand why they would continue the series without the main character? I watched the first 3 episodes now of Season 4 and it is poorly written, contrived, poorly acted (what did they have to go on with such bad plots?!) I wonder who the writers/producers assumed their audience was...I feel offended they would think I would settle for an abrupt ending to a wonderful character and the sudden introduction to a pale copy. If they would have at least made Leonard the new focus...I was invested in him...it would have kept my interest...Better to have ended it after Season 3. Also, I think English actors are the best in the world, but when it comes down to American accents, they are just as bad as Americans doing British ones...Viola's Southern accent was cringe-worthy. Plus, they had absolutely NO chemistry!!

Don’t see the show being successful from now on. Sidney going off to Alabama in the fifties with somebody he just met. Please, no logic nor explanation of a big love affair, just a bit of forbidden sex with a stranger. The new vicar has no credibility and no chemistry with Geordie. I’ll watch a couple of episodes but if the script doesn’t improve radically I don’t see the point. Good luck James Norton in your future career, if you become the new Bond you will have to lose weight and put on muscles. I think a more complex character would suit you more. Live and learn.

The child was not his. But it makes ne think he was not in love with Amanda, he was probably just infatuated with her and it run its course bc he knew Amanda for years, and he could not leave the church for her. He could not marry her and stay a vicar. This is a man that drank like a fish when he feels guilty over something he did that was not right. He slept with Amanda so many times and he would not commit to marry her. So no I don't think he was in love with her. They played so many cat and mouse game b4 and after she got married I was hoping they would have a happy ending, but it was not to be, I started watching with him the crime fighting really flawed vicar, so I hope I can still watch bc I like Jordy he is has a dry humor.
