Looks like a pretty similar camera experience. The 3a seems to have a slightly different white balance. The 4 has an advantage with zoom and portrait mode. Thanks for the comparison Grant 👍

Thank you for doing this video.... This is exactly the comparison I was looking for. I sold my pixel 3A because 64 gigs wasn't enough for me with my music and pictures and videos and also it was starting to lag a little bit and I was going to get another newer Pixel phone this year but I think I will wait till next year and hopefully Google will update the camera hardware on the pixel line.

My biggest question for all of these is which one was most accurate to the actual scene? The 3A seem to capture warmer shots than the 4 and 4A. Which one was more real to life?

Yes, as I mentioned in my final thoughts, I feel they look the same in ideal/even lighting. Otherwise the 4/4A are cooler and 3A clearly warmer. The scene was probably somewhere in between. Wasn't that cool or warm.

I have a Pixel 3a (Android 10) and its biggest issue is the white balance, which is usually worse than the white balance of the Pixel 0 = Nexus 5x, which even has white balance presets. I usually use the Pixel 3a in HDR+ enhanced mode (which is the best mode of the Pixel 3a, it's a fast Night Sight mode, in my opinion it's better than Night Sight, Pixel 4/5 don't have it), which has a different white balance than the default mode, but it doesn't matter whether I use HDR+ or HDR+ enhanced/Night Sight , the white balance of the 3a isn't as good as the Nexus 5x, especially indoors the 3a struggles (but also sunsets are not as accurate as the Nexus), as far as I know the Pixel 4 is even worse indoors.

Thank you for the comparison. Agree with you that their cameras' performance almost the same. Maybe Pixel 4 is a bit better in some situations. And definitely Pixel 4 has a better mic. But it's not a game changer for upgrading. Please make a comparison of Pixel 3a and Pixel 5. Interesting to see the result.

2:25 it's really amazing how google can deliver such a good portrait mode in non human subjects, just by using it's single lens dual pixel technology. In most cases it's even better than other existing phones that need dual cameras and extra sensors for that.

Google's dual pixel depth detection only works well for near objects. For normal portraits Google is less accurate than competitors.

Will say pixel phones have not change their sensor for years now. Aside from a few software changes, pictures comes out the same. I feel like google is cheating consumers by tweaking their camera software to make it look like a "new and better" camera. The pixel really need to come up with better camera hardware for their next phone.

I bought a Nexus 5x in 2015. Since then I looked at many, many reviews and sample images of every Google phone that was released since then and also bought a Pixel 3a. My conclusion: Google hasn't improved the daylight image quality since the Nexus 5x in HDR+ On mode, rather worse. Note that HDR+ On wasn't the default mode of the Nexus 5x, therefore most people don't know that the great image quality didn't start with the Pixel phones. Also note that the hardware of the Pixel 5 captures about the same amount of light per time as the Nexus 5x, but the newer sensor of the Pixel 3a performs better in low light than the sensor of the Nexus (tested with 3rd party app dng files) (though the sensor of the 3a suffers much more from dead pixels, it can ruin photos). In my opinion the biggest image quality improvement since the Nexus is the low-light HDR+ enhanced noise performance of the Pixel 3a, especially when you zoom 1.4 times (Google combines more frames when you zoom ,hence less noise, though there can be some dead pixels). Night Sight isn't good in my opinion. It often leads to slightly blurry photos and takes up to 7 seconds. In most cases HDR+ enhanced can achieve about the same noise and brightness as Night Sight (if you use exposure compensation), but it's sharper and only takes up to 2.5s (or 4s if you zoom). Pixel 4/5 don't have HDR+ enhanced. Apple's night mode takes up to 3s by default as far as I know.

In my opinion they mainly need to 1. improve the main camera hardware (including autofocus) and fix artifacts like dead pixels 2. implement a periscope tele 3. bring back features like white balance settings and fast Night Sight mode (known as HDR+ enhanced). 4. improve the portrait mode

Hey Grant, or anyone else willing to help me. I'm considering to purchase the pixel 4a for my next phone, however, it costs 470 USD here in my country due to import tax, which makes it closely priced to a brand new Iphone XR(64GB, 530 USD). 60 USD difference I would say isn't that small for us but it also isn't huge at all. Throwing budget & os preference aside, which one is the better buy for the long run? I value camera+video experience & good battery life🤔 One of the things that is stopping me from getting the XR is the camera quality compared to the 4a (lack of night mode, white balance, reliability etc).

You can get an app like Neuralcam for iPhone night mode. Given your needs I'd recommend the 4a. Only thing is what expectations you have for video and the iPhone may perform better in the long run.

It takes away from the pixel experience of point and shoot & reliability in my opinion. But that's my preference haha. I'm not really a specs guy so I wouldn't mind at all the specs difference between the 4a and a, say, xiaomi mi10t pro despite costing the same here.

Honestly, I don't notice much of a difference and the image processing time is actually quite similar. In real usage the benefits of the neural core aren't meaningful, which is why I'm not surprised Google ditched it.
