How large is that milling container? What's the media, and how much do u use? How many grams are you putting into a container that size? Is it just the usual 75/15/10 formula? How long is the Mill running for? Sorry about all the questions. Just trying to gather as much information as possible. Thanks for sharing, Dyl

Not when you are making it with alcohol. The alcohol kinda binds it.

I've tried this a few times with the standard 75/15/10 BP mix without much success in producing suitable granules, my granules always end up being weak and crumbly even from minor movements. I dont know if this us a standard for this style if graduation. It wont be a problem I haven't produced large quantities of it yet, and I'm expecting some high quality dextrin in a few days, just to keep things constant. Any insight that you could give me would be appreciated. James.

The alcohol only makes it dry a little faster it is the water in the alcohol which dissolves the potassium nitrate and recrystallizes part of it into the charcoal that makes it burn faster. BP was made quite successfully using only water for hundreds of years. This processes is more correctly called" corning" granulation infers a more modern commercial compressed powder. Sorry! only a few picky points great and useful vido please make moore.

Could you please tell me do you add dextrin into the mixture before adding alcohol? everytime when I dont use dextrin, I can't get the power into a ball. it just stay like a mess
@buckshot91354 жыл бұрын
If you are having trouble getting the black powder to the proper consistency it's either too wet or too dry. The dextrin is used to make the black powder more durable after granulating. Add it before or after mixing BP.
@funkyole11254 жыл бұрын
Use dextrin liquor if you having trouble with your mixing. Add dextrin to cold water and set water to boil stirring constantly like your making gravy. Let it cool then add to your meal d powder. I don’t add dextrin to the powder anymore, I make the liquor instead. Works great and decently powerful also.two ounces in a four inch ball shell lifts the shell way too high.

No dextrin?? No water mixed? Arent they needed?
@dmithsmith58805 жыл бұрын
No dextrin needed at 6,000psi it makes no difference and just makes the powder not burn as clean and crisp. I use 1.5cc of straight water to 12 grams of meal mixed together well and die press it in a 1 5/8 die at around 6,000 psi. Makes really nice stuff. IMHO the water helps mix the comp better making the chemical bond tighter on a molecular level and improves the quality to some extent then just going dry... Another thing is people tend to use alcohol in the water to speed drying, again IMHO its counter productive, kno3 is not soluble in alchohol so it's not helping out at all with your intimate blending of ingredients.

I'm no expert, but I have seen people use all ratios of isopropyl. I would recoment 70%, that's what I use and it works well. Although, I doubt it matters.

l am needing to make “FFg” black powder for my .75 caliber flintlock. Any idea on the size mesh I’d need? Can’t really get a definitive answer anywhere.
@alexwang24196 жыл бұрын
I'm planning on getting some GOEX ff to see what the size is.
@dmithsmith58806 жыл бұрын
TheTyler701 For any muzzle loader use, the powder really should be damp pressed with a shop press in a die at around 6,000 psi into pucks. Once pucks are allowed to dry crush them up and screen to desired size. I catch everything between 20 and 30 mesh for FF and everything between 30 and 40 mesh for FFF. it's the consistency of your grain size you want along with dialing in the measured amount of charge your gun likes. Every brand of powder runs a slightly different size and range of mesh for what they call FF, FFF etc. You can get away with not pressing it but you will find that a storebought 100 grains measure of say Goex will have similar power of about 150 grains of unpressed and will have pretty heavy fouling and not be very efficient because it will not burn as clean and crisp. Properly pressed Black Powder should be pretty close to 80 grains weight at 80 grains volume. Unpressed it's closer to 50 weight per 80 volume.

@James Zachary Oh ya my bad.. I meant like 6,000 psi. I am running a 1 5/8 die with a 6 ton press maxed out so..at like 2.11 sq inches @12,000 lbs is around 5800 psi.. really anything over like 4,000 psi as long as you are damp pressing is adequate as long as it is consistent.. my pucks sound just like poker chips on a table. I find 1.5cc of water per 12 grams of meal without dextrin is just about the perfect amount of water. I get like 1 drop of water that squishes out of the die.
@donaldbarnett80454 жыл бұрын
FFg Black powder is a grain size that will pass through nothing smaller than a 16 mesh screen. But ffg refers to modern Black powder (the type made since the early 1700) it is compressed into cakes under high pressures (6 tons) or about half its wet size these cakes are then crushed and screened to various sizes such as fg= -12 mesh to +16 mesh, ffg -16 mesh to +30 mesh and fffg -20 mesh to +50 mesh The ffg is the most commonly used type fffg is used only for small cal pistols or rifles under .40 cal.. There is a ffffg size but is used only in flash pans and anything that passes the ffffg screen is called dust and is used only for pyrotechnics.

A simple star is 44,44,12. Add dextrin to water to make a “gravy”,then use to wet the star mixture.cut to the size you want to use it for and dry before use. Pot nitrat, charcoal,sulfur is what the above is.

Curious about how the alcohol 'binds it'. KNO3 is not soluble in alcohol, while a bit of water will dissolve the KNO3 and have it bind better; also a little water won't cause large crystals. The last batch I did, no binders etc, I did with pure alcohol. The powder was fast, but I'm not sure how durable it will be. But then, I go through it pretty fast also..
@0xzie3 жыл бұрын
Water dissolves the KNO3 add allows it to crystallize, this lowers the power. Alcohol dissolves the resin in the wood( as long as you're using soft wood like willow/cedar). It also drys much faster.

I don't exactly know, when I tried it, it was rathet hard, burned slower than the original powder and worked preety much the same up to 3 months after
