When I was just a little girl, I did not know grapes were toxic to dogs. I used to eat grapes and peel one for my dog. That dog lived to be old and never got sick…I would make sure there was no pits in the grape….or peel. God was good to my innocence…..

probably because when you were a little girl they did not spray growth hormones and pesticides on the grapes. Grapes, cherries, peaches, apples and particularly berries and other fruits are #1 highly toxic if not organic for that reason. That is my opinion but I am well read on the subject being a vegan and veg most of my life. Organic fruit is the only way to go except for citrus and bananas and melons which have hard exteriors.

I got a giggle out of this. About 4 years ago I had the cutest little 9 lb. Yorkie named Andy. I went over to a rental property to fix it up to sell and took my dogs in the motor home. I fixed a little fenced area for them, not thinking of anything. There were several badly overgrown grape vines, but we weren't parked near them. On Sunday (of course, after hrs.) I caught Andy outside nibbling stuff off the ground. This wasn't unusual, he would go around the house eating dead flies, etc. He had come to me as a senior from a shelter in LA and we didn't know his history, so I assumed he was used to scavenging. Anyway, I saw his stomach which was bloated. I went over to see what he was eating and, low and behold, it was dried grapes, commonly known as raisins. They had blown over to where the RV was parked. I rushed him to the emergency vet and $2000 later I picked him up the next day, with absolutely nothing wrong with him. Of course they pumped his stomach and said he was really full. I miss the little guy, he was so adorable and had the biggest, dark eyes.

I didn’t know grapes (and raisins too) were bad for pets until about a year and a half ago. Makes more sense that only a small percentage are affected. Otherwise I think we would have known about this long ago. Thank for being honest about your past mistakes regarding grapes. I used to feed my pets garlic powder and brewers yeast 25 years ago. I don’t think it’s good for them either. My cats used to eat my breakfast bread that had raisins and walnuts (also a no no). My pets love chips and salty snacks as well, but because of onion powder those would be ill advised. I really appreciate the tips on using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting and how to use the charcoal! I have both on hand, I hope I never need to use them.

She would have 2 or 3 a few times a week as a healthy play treat. I'd throw one she'd catch it throw it in air for a wee while and play with it, then delicately eat it. The same with pieces of raw carrot and other veg etc. A fantastic fit healthy dog, had a great life. Then someone told me about grapes and dogs a few years ago and I thought they were crazy. My second dog wasn't interested in them so I stopped offering her them.

We used to grow grapes, and I knew of their potential toxicity, so we made sure to put up a wire fence around each vine. (We only had a few vines.) My golden retriever, Athena, used to somehow manage to get inside that tiny fenced area and would eat all the grapes she could. If she did this while we were not outside, she would then be trapped in the fenced area and bark incessantly in order to be assisted out. (This led to some serious issues when the summer heat came along as we could no longer leave the house out of fear that she would suffer.) Didn't matter if we were out there with her or not, she would Houdini her way in there within 5 seconds. She lived to be almost 19. We had to euthanize her on New Year's Eve less than a month from her 19th birthday. She was fine at 7 am and by 8 am, she went downhill immediately and we knew it was time.

To be clear, I don't give my dog grapes out of caution anymore, but I've always felt this grape toxicity was blown way WAYYY out of proportion. I grew up in the 70s and 80s and my Grandmother ran the local shelter for more than 30 years. We routinely gave grapes to all the dogs as treats for as long as I could remember. I can't recall one single case of a dog becoming ill as a result of something they ate while at the shelter. Our German shepherds at home also routinely recieved grapes and they lived long full healthy lives. If they were so risky for dogs, I would think someone may have noticed the potential for toxicity well before the late 1990s. Seems like the rise of the internet may be a contributing factor as is all fear mongering. Id be willing to bet grape toxicity is no more likely for dogs than it is for humans.

We keep our home food dog friendly, meaning we don't keep any foods in the home that we know they can't have like macadamia nuts, raisins etc., because accidents happen. Maybe drop something and not even know it. Yeah we are a paranoid home when it comes to their safety. I guess it's called a "helicopter mom" but I believe "better safe than sorry". I can live without grapes and those other 'no-nos' for dogs, living with guilt if they died from something I could've easily prevented is something I would not want to live with. Okay question now they say not to give peroxide to a dog that snores or has like issues on breathing problems like boxers bulldogs is that true that you should not give peroxide to make the dog throw up if it's like a bulldog or a boxer that stores has breathing issues just wondering just question and also if you give your dog peroxide to throw up and the dog does not throw up what do you do

Do raisins have the same level of toxins as fresh grapes? Thanks.
@cityofoaks3 жыл бұрын
Yes, raisins are what caused our girl's raisin toxicity.
@VeterinarySecrets3 жыл бұрын

Hi Dr Jones, Great Presentation As Always. Last Night I Was Eating Grapes & One Of My Pooches Kept Asking For Some, I Stuck To My Guns Tho & Gave Some Blueberry An Raspberry Instead, Obviously Did Right Thing. My Other Dog Has a Major Prob With Foot Allergy, He's Always Chewing His Paws, Has Buster Collar On Far 2 Regular, Tried Vets ( DO NOT KNOW OFF ANY GOOD VETS IN MY LOCATION ) The Cortacare Spray Stinks Of Alcohol & Dries An Irritates Further, And The Hibiscrub Doesn't Do Much Better. Thinking Of Some Good Quality Moisturizer To Put On His Feet Regularly, Do You Have Any Suggestions? Would Appreciate Your Feedback.

i once gave my grandmas dogs a couple of grapes without knowing. then i found out they were toxic. one of the dogs (age roughly 14yo) got kidney failure maybe 2 years later. do you think the grapes would have been the cause?
@basilbaby76783 жыл бұрын
Kidney failure in older dogs is common, unfortunately.

My dogs have been eating grapes and Muscadine for years never a problem
@wandaarganbright40563 жыл бұрын
I've never had a dog that would even eat a grape or raisin. They don't even like the smell of them. I just thought it was an instinctive dislike because they knew they were bad for them.
