THANK YOU!!! GOD! YES!!! Best tutorial videos I've seen for years! Almost every other YT tutorial out there is either "How to draw a circle in AI" or a speedrun of a 500 layer grandmaster artwork! I love how you explain the whole thing from A to Z and not only take some pre-fabricated work and show where the expand button is! Awesome work!!!

Great job on this video. Very helpful. Really appreciate how easy to follow it is. I have not used any Design tools in many years. A lot has changed and this was really helpful. Thank again.

I wonder why they call the function expand instead of apply or consolidate. thank you for the help !!

You're welcome! I think it's because usually you are taking a stroke from a single line and expanding it outward to a filled shape. That's my guess, anyway! :D

Thank for your videos I’m a beginner learning as I go, but could I ask so I’ve created my artwork then saved it as PDF, now I want to prepare my artwork to print on stickers and I can’t expand it? Do I need to expand it in preparation to print stickers? Thank you in advance 🙂
@GDHT3 жыл бұрын
If you don't have any outlines or effects, you won't need to expand. 🙂

I have a file that contains calligraphic brush strokes(circular dots). If I do the expand appearance it turns to radial-gradient fill paths which is fine. When I do the expand next time it turns to thousands of single fill color paths. My problem is if I want to submit this file to a stock website like Freepik, Shutterstock, do I need to do both expand appearance and expand or can I submit the file after doing expand appearance without doing expand?
@GDHT2 жыл бұрын
Depending on the type of gradient, I think you can expand appearance without doing expand. If it isn't, Shutterstock will reject it and you can figure out another solution...but if it's just regular gradient fill paths I would think it would be ok.

Strange.......when I draw a star or other shape with fill and stroke Then go to OBJECT, Expand is greyed out and only Expand Appearance is enabled.
@GDHT3 жыл бұрын
If you were working on something before that used the appearance panel, Illustrator automatically uses the previous setting. In that case, you'll use Expand Appearance instead. I just use whichever is available to me. :)

It sounds like you might already have it expanded to its simplest form.

But how do you unexpand text?
@GDHT3 жыл бұрын
I always keep an unexpanded version off the side of the artboard. So two copies. Once it’s expanded, you can’t undo it if you’ve closed the file.
