A great job. Its always better to grind the plastic away and allow the full x8 connection (Some Severs even offers "open" x8 slots by default). Because if we just using a stock x1-x16 riser adapter then x8 would get negotiated down to x1. That's fine for mining but not for rendering / gaming etc.

The issue I see with the USB-Riser thingy is, that it only seems to be 4x on the PCIe side. USB 3.0 has a transfer rate of 5 gb/s, but PCIe 1.0/2.0 only manage 1gb/s / 2gb/s on 4x. So when using this one on a old Server, you'd get even more of a bottleneck. Putting it simple, "our" old PCIe 1.X 8x Slots are already at the very borderline when it comes to even older high end GPU (think GTX 680, HD 7970). Something I wonder tough... the way PCIe works i.E. you can just cut off the back of a x4 slot and throw in a x16 card and what not, wouldn't it be possible to make some kind of adaptor for 2 x8 to 1 x16?

Hi, I have a Supermicro board on a few of my servers, and if I install a PCIe graphics card I cannot virtualize the KVM in the IPMI interface. I can access the IPMI interface via IP, but when I try to run the virtual KVM console, it shows just a black screen. Have you tried to do this here with the IBM IMM BMC interface and the virtual KVM? I would like to see if you get this working because I would like to pass through a graphics card to an Apple VM on ESXI.

+My PlayHouse (Morten Hjorth) It does function, BUT you must tell the Server in the EFI to use the Onboard video for display rather than the GPU, atleast for ESXi Anyway, Windows or Linux may be different as they may allow you once booted to use both the onboard and the Add-in card and mirror them, i will need to try the later myself and see what happens, il give it a try tomorrow and report back.

Silly question does IBM have proper 3d GFX drivers for that IBM onboard video driver. my HP G5's don't so I get the basic video card & 1.0 in the Windows 7 as well. Once I install server 2003/2008/2008 R2 it installs the Es1000 ati driver with full 3d driver support. Have you tried the Windows Server in a non vm on the M1/2/3/4 serise Server you have? Hi TCN0101 Do you have any idear how the power works in thag 6pin connector? Thank you for watching! :-)
@krist0sh
@krist0sh 9 жыл бұрын
I actually can't find any relevant information on the motherboard mounted 6-pin connector online, which is pretty weird considering this is IBM. However, if you have a multi-meter you could certainly measure the voltage of the pins in that motherboard-connector and compare it to the original PCIe pin-out. When you find out where the +12V and ground are located in the connector, making a 6-pin to 6-pin cable yourself shouldn't be that hard. Especially if it matches the original PCIe layout, which in that case it's just to splice the yellow and black cables together. Looking forward to an update on this project! Actually got an x3650 M1 which I gave to my friend as it's way too noisy for my usage. Had 2 of those 'weak' dual-core's as you mentioned in your other video too, but for him as a testing server it's more than enough.

Hey, I got ibm system x3400 with 32gb and 2 Xeon that im trying to make a gaming machine. The server was really cheap (45€) and now im seeing some way to addapt some graphics card to it. I saw some chinese risers, like from pci-e 8x to 16x that i think could be a good bet. Im even think of adapt the riser since the pci-e only gives 25W of power and usually the high end graphics need more juice. Do you think the machine will be bootlenecked?

Unless I'm mistaken, the 1080 comes with two 8 pit (or 6+8 pin) connectors and has a TDP of 180w, so theoretically you should be able to fuel it just fine using an additional PSU (unless you manage to find a server which can handle this by itself).

Hello kind sir! I have a 1U X 3250 M2 server that I have had on a shelf for a very long time. Today I removed the E2200 CPU and replaced it with a Q6600! Socket 775! It also accepted 8GB of non-ECC PC6400 DDR2 RAM with no problems. I am very happy that it worked. My next plan is my graphics card. The internal layout of my server is very similar to yours, but it is all 1U. Unfortunately I don't have a single slot GPU (GTX 680 is double slot). I am hoping to use your video to help me fit this in my new machine. It is very noisy! Thank you

Hi CableWrestler Thank You very much! I am not very knowledgeable with th x3250 M2, but you need to check if it had a PCI-e X16 slot for a GPU card,, and if it has internal power pin for GPU,, 6pin or 8pin. If there is only an PCI-e X8 there is just 25watt in that slot. If there is an PCI-e X16 there is 75W (unless anything else is noted) 6pin connector is another 75W and 8pin is 150W,,, and then there is the spaces limitations in the server. I notice further down in the comments you tried to buy one but they had no stock and refunded your money. Did you manage to find one somewhere else? On the other hand, I think I might have found a PCIe gen 2 Nvidia card that APPEARS to have an x8 (or maybe even x4) connector on it. Have you ever seen/tried one of these? www.asus.com/au/Graphics-Cards/710-2-SL/overview/ I have found these new on ebay for under AU$100. No idea if it will fit or work, but perhaps you may know? Hi! You know you could have just bought the PCI-E x16 Riser card for this server model and used that in place of the 2x x8 PCI-E Riser board. The you can just plug the card in without cutting anything and plug in the Power and your good to go. Here is the Riser board you need: www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-46M6400-x3660-M2-Riser-Card-/150865559077?hash=item232049be25 Another thing is that 3550's come with x16 risers by default (1 full height and 1 half height slot) but they only take single slot cards, but they still have a 6 pin PCI-E Power connecter, just remove the Raid Card battery try to find it hiding underneath. Source: i Own 2x 3550 M2 and 1x 3650 M2 and have considered options for GPUs, Another option is you could have a look at Club 3d's R7 230 PCI-E X1 GPU which would drop straight into the x8 slot and is slot powered. My PlayHouse Glad i was able to help you, even with the post and import tax, its still cheap as far as server parts go, especially when new. I Shall definitely be sticking around your channel. I just love IBM System X servers :P, got 3 already and looking to add a x3250 M3 to the family to replace the x3650 M2 as the "Always On' Domain controller, mainly for noise and power saving reasons. i Can get my hands on one for $175 AUD delivered with 4GB ram Quad Core Xeon and 2x250GB Sata drives. www.ebay.com.au/itm/IBM-x3250-M3-Server-1-x-Xeon-Quad-Core-x3440-2-53Ghz-4GB-MEM-2-x-250GB-SATA-/231700973052?hash=item35f27445fc Have you any experience with the x3250 M3's ? -Alex.

Hi, thats ok, i have a decent idea what I'm in for with a x3250 as i have looked at the detailed specs on it. i prefer 3550's (1U) over 3650's for ESXi and some other roles because i can fit twice as much CPU and memory in the same space, only downsides is 6 HDD's Max vs 12 and only 2 Single slot PCI-E slots. Had a look at your unboxing of the 9 year old "new" APC UPS, that sucks the issues you had, but totally worth replacing the batteries in the pack yourself with ones of the same type, half the cost of getting another genuine pack, and those things are built like a tank and give VERY clean power, i have APC UPS's. One of them is 15 years old with new batteries, Beige color 2nd Gen Smart UPS 700XL, and still gives perfectly clean power to protect the ADSL and Wifi in the study. Just beware that the Serial cable pinout is NOT standard for those units, and using a standard serial cable could cause the unit to shutdown the outlets if you open a serial session of any kind to the unit. -Alex.
