There is a Sulphur Mountain at Banff, AB, CA. There was a man Norman Sanson who operated a cosmic ray research station 700m up (not the highest part of the mountain) for 30 years. He made the trip up 1000 times.

did you put a bit of silicon or sealant behind the screws, where the box attaches to the pole. When working with electronics in a sealed environment, next killer is condensation, which leads to fun issues. One can maintain the water tightness, with a leg of pipe or conduit, to prevent it from having water enter from below, ie from a storrmy winds, while allowing the box to breath
@MyPlayHouse12 күн бұрын
I did drill holes in the bottom,, so water will most likely drain out if any finds it´s way in.

I'm running a small on demand setup with wireless, LTE, PMR Repeater (basicly just an ham radio with that feature), wireless backhall and a weatherstation on a studio lamp mount. You like it trying and a bit janky, but so far I can say that a 35€ outdoor box can reduce the jank level by a lot. Also, the box is a good idea, but if you want something cheap and a bit more temperature resistent, you can get a cheap passiv cooling box at lidl, which has better water resistence. I personally just us a upside down eurobox for the temp setup and puts the battery on a wood block mixing buckets as weights. My setup is a old 160w poly panel, Victron 75/15 (the only new part apart from the cables), an old Dell IoT 5000 who does LTE/wifi, routing and VPN, 24v car USB-A & C-PD charger and a 24v50ah battery. This lasts like 1 day without sun, mainly because of the powerdraw is high and the panel does 90w peak, the victron says. Hope this may bring you some ideas ^^

Well I do the best I can,, it's 30Km to the shop,, so you pick something that you think will do the job,, and hope for the best,, it´s a minimum of 2 hours to go and get something else,, this has now run stable for 5 days.
@bastian77518 күн бұрын
Maybe use some outdoor rated cable. I guess you could also try to use some PVC tape to temporarily make it more sun/water resistant. AIso I don't think the box can be in the sun without some forced cooling in some way. Especially in summer.

hey morten, for the battery box, would it make sense to dig it out a lil deeper, and put some lil rock down, and then put drain holes in the box, so the water, if it got in again, could drain out?
@MyPlayHouse18 күн бұрын
Maybe,, but I believe the water has come in, as the black plastic was broken.
@DanielFSmith18 күн бұрын
The water gets in because the box breathes as the temperature fluctuates. When air comes in, the water vapor condenses on the cold walls.

The box is kind of in the shade under the solar panels,,, It will have to do much (2 * 30W and 12v is max 5A) But there is the danger of it becoming a greenhouse.

Hi Morton, what about a hammered painted 5 coats, wooden wine box(inside and out), that would protect it from the sun, rain and the heat. 1) hammered painted, UV-resistant paint for iron gates. 2) Wine box, free in most stores.

Why not just pull ethernet câble with PoE ? Et the end it's more reliable and offrer you hard reset feature. If you're over 100 metter , ac power + Fiber + media converter work too. UV câble cost a bit more but still cheaper than zll Solar + wifi stuff

@@MyPlayHouse You can do single mode fiber with some cheap 1G tranceiver and media converter. It require you tu run a powerline + a fiber on those 230 metter, but it's more reliable at the end. @DodgyFPV18 күн бұрын
The battery has its own BMS (Battery Management System) which will turn off in the event of over discharge, so you could install a regulator directly off the battery to power the internet relay and not use the charge controllers load option, those charge controllers are not stable or reliable, also you can buy a shunt that monitors the power which can connect to the internet, food for thought.
@MyPlayHouse18 күн бұрын
Might be worth it to have a DC-DC step down converter connected to the solar panels and pushing ,, maybe 12,5v in to the battery around the charge controller..
@guywhoknows18 күн бұрын
Dont forget that you need to set the charge controller to the correct voltages. If you have a heated battery dont forget that it will also drain power from the battery.
@MyPlayHouse18 күн бұрын
The heat is only needed when you want to charge the batteries in cold weather. What it will do is. the battery will disable charging as the battery is to cold,, if there is power comming in, it will direct that power to the heating element. If the battery becomes warm enough, it will start charging. Battery power is not used for heating.
