This EVGA RTX 2080 was an interesting case for a few reasons. First, it hade more than one thing wrong with it, second, it had a factory defect that was apparently widespread at the time, but never got repaired under warranty, and third, it had been subjected to physical damage.
I this first episode, we'll introduce the story and fix the physical damage that prevented the card from working at all.

Thanks for your great videos, I subscribed and bought myself a rework station thanks to your great teaching, I'll try my hands on a dozen 280x and 7970 soon for fun. I have an idea for improvement for your test bench, you should replace that pci-e extender for a pci-e 1x usb mining riser. Those extenders are fragile compared to the risers and other than having the gpu card working only at 1x on the pci-e lanes, they boot and work in windows on 1x. Also i'll be really watching the next episode.

Hello, love your videos~ I have question, the problem is the board of which picture I posted on my youtube banner (since they kill links) I desoldered broken capacitor parts that are burnt, cleaned it with isopropyl, and plugged it in without heatsinks to see what's up. The burnt area sparked, and I turned pc off. Is it fixable at all, should I try somehow soldering capacitor on it, or just scoop the copper off. I guess traces are dead but I'd like to hear your verdict. Thanks in advance, I hope your glance saves me a bunch of time :)

Probably not fixable, unfortunately.

can someone help me with a strix rx 580? i dont know much it has 5 volt 12 volt but the lower voltages seems to not work, how i can chack if the gpu chip is bad? theres no short on any rail as far as i can tell.

If the core and memory rails are dead, but have a non-zero resistance to ground, it's unlikely that the GPU itself is bad. I don't remember exactly what the core resistance on an RX580 should be, but I'd guess around 2-3 ohms. The next step is to figure out exactly which rails are and are not running. You said that it has 5V, which is produced by a regulator on the board, and 12V, which is provided by the power supply, but you didn't mention the 3.3V rail, which is also provided by the power supply. Do you have 3.3V anywhere on the board?

@@AaronAverett i checked the 3.3v from the motherboard pcie slot wich it has, above it has a similar "buck converter" circuit like with the 5v rail but shows 0 ohm to ground and has 0 volts too. and im really appreciate u had time to reply.

Its near 3r3 right lower corner of the board same as yours 980 ti video can you takea look ans tell me something about it

Make a thread in the video card section over at hardforum.com with detailed pictures and a description of what you've done. I'll keep an eye out for it. Full disclosure, I do not own HardForum. It's possible that you just overheated the APW7142 when you replaced it, but it's also possible that the problem you're dealing with lies downstream from it, and it's that that's killing it. Hard to say without more info, or having the board in my hands.

I don't know but aren't these coils rampant on all kinds of Graphics cards, so you can salvage them from some broken one? Anyway, good job! Now you are the official coil-dealer in your area! I am keen on the next part. A Nvidia card that is not boosting .. hmm.. maybe the controller thinks it has hit its thermal or powerlimit? Maybe that guy was fiddeling around with the shunt-resistors as well? Thanks for the Video, and sorry for my English.

It would absolutely be an option to cannibalize another dead 20 series card for this part if I had one, but I didn't. You can't use just any coil in that position because they need to be carefully selected for current handling capacity, frequency, and inductance. If the inductance is too low, they saturate and supply 12V to the logic circuits, which is obviously undesirable. Furthermore, as I talked about in the video, I needed its physical dimensions to be a particular size, so I could fit the heatsink back on. It was challenging to find the part I needed, but probably worth it if I'm going to keep doing this.
