Would it not be easier to work backwards from y? As in inserting the natural numbers through the y coordinates to get the x coordinates.

Technically yes, but you're looking for realistic values for the given log. That's why he picked 16 for Log base 4. If you had Log base 3... 3 would make sense... then 9... etc etc.
