In this video, I am trying out my new Staedtler Lumograph Graphite Pencils and giving my first impressions/mini review on them! I also compare them to the Faber Castell 9000 Graphite Pencils, which are the graphite pencils I primarily use.

Hi Alexis Happy New Year and Christmas all the best to you and your family.I ordered in December both Faber 9000 and Mars Lumograph sets of 12 and both perform very well but honestly also the paper used to draw is a factor..If the paper is more satine like Bristol papers softer grades like 5B+ can be used and also if you use the ultra smooth paper like Lana Bristol then you can go up to 12B and still have no problem because it has no textures and it goes dark right away.But if you use paper with pores in it it needs to go from 4H 2H up to 4B maybe maximum 5B but 5B on some papers makes to much granulation on paper that has textures..So in my opinion the pencils used for certain drawing depends purely on the paper.But yes Faber Castell are harder then Lumograph just like you said. I also found out about very cheap graphite pencil that performs amazing for shading Stabilo Othello 282 they are around 0.3 Euro or 0.4 USD which is amazing price for a pencil and they for me perform superb for darker tones. But honestly testing all the papers and texture the paper has really decides what gradation of pencils work better and what are making granulating effects. 12 B Lumograph and all pencils from 5B gradation and up can only be used in full potential on Bristol ultra smooth papers or used to make super dark shades in several layers to get almost black but it needs to be worked with the brush to blend it.Softer grades from 5B+ are way to granulating on the papers that are not extra smooth that has texture and pores into them so if not blended properly can have unwanted texture in some areas.

@@predragdjokic3761 wow, thank you for this extremely detailed insight! The paper type is definitely very important in how your results will turn out. I will need to try these pencils on my Bristol smooth paper, as I’m sure the result will be different. The grain can also be a stylistic choice, i sometimes like to leave it in my artwork and other times I prefer a more smooth surface which is often how I choose my paper! Of course, some people dislike the grain a lot which is understandable. With ultra smooth paper, one has to be careful not to overlayer as the paper doesn’t have much tooth. But the dark grades will definitely show up smooth right away. I have made one video about paper types before but it is such an important and underrated topic that I might consider making more vids about it in the future! The stabilo pencils sound interesting, I have their pastel pencils and they work well so I’m sure their graphite is good too! Thanks again for watching and providing your insight/knowledge!

I draw 3 to 4 hours each day without skipping a day and always use Staedtler Mars Lumograph...They are just the perfect graphite pencils..yes once you get to the 12 B its not anymore to erase..My favorite is the 10B that is better then the 12B.

nice review 😀 I use to use Staedtler pencils all the time, but its just so much easier for ne to fine Derwent pencils here but I end up mixing all me graphite pencils together anyway so brand doesnt matter with me, as long as the pencil works
@AlexisCassandraArt
@AlexisCassandraArt 3 жыл бұрын
Yup I love mixing them up too! I find that you can’t go wrong with these higher quality brands, the very cheap ones sometimes are scratchy or have other issues. I know derwent is another good brand but I don’t own any of their pencils quite yet, maybe one day. The coloursoft interest me! Thanks for watching:)

I got these pencils for Christmas! Hopefully, they will help create a better contrast in my drawings. (they probably will considering all I was using before was a 2B lol) Thank you for sharing your thoughts on these! ☺️

I tried them for a while, but they just aren't for me. The ones that would matter are the high B pencils, but I found these were the ones that had the most problems. Definitely more negatives than positives. It is just so much easier, and I think much better, to use a colored pencil, or charcoal, or a carbon pencil, or even a black pastel, whichever you like most, to do away with shine. These actually work. The Lumograph penci9ls, at best, just makes the shine a little less noticeable, and I found you pay a steep price for it. At the very least, the high B pencils in this set have wax in them, and, to me, feel more like colored pencils than graphite, yet don't eliminate shine as well as a colored pencil, or any of the other things artists use. I use General's, and I like the 0xxB more than anything Staedtler has in this range. Staedtler makes very good pencils, but so do everyone. There simply are no bad pencils in the top brands, whether it's Staedtler, Derwent, General's, Caran d'Ache, Mitsubishi, etc. I even know several pro artists who prefer cheap Chinese made pencils. I tried them, and had no complaints at all. I don't think any area in art has more snobbery attached than the area of pencils, whether it's graphite pencils or colored pencils. Some of the best graphite art I've ever seen was done with the stubs of some HB pencils, and a discarded partial roll of butcher paper the artist pulled out of the city dump, and some of the best colored pencil art was done with Crayola, or with cheap Chinese colored pencils. There's an old adage that goes, "It's a poor worker who blames the tools." Nowhere is this truer than in art. I learned a long time ago that the best graphite pencil brand in the world is, always has been, and always will be, whichever brand a given artist prefers using. The second best brand is whichever brand the artist has to use. If there's a huge second area of snobbery, it's with paper. We tested some pro artists, and none of them could tell Walmart's Pen Gear sketchbook paper from the same lever of Strathmore. And they loved HP 32lb premium printer paper when they thought it was a new brand of smooth drawing paper.

Very insightful comment! I think as artists we just grow to have our own preferences ,and mine is honestly still with the Faber Castell 9000. Generals is great also. I have yet to try Mitsubishi but always hear good things about those. For me, I usually prefer a slightly thicker paper as others may prefer thinner. When I started out drawing, it was just with a #2 pencil and then I graduated to a cheap graphite set. Artists just love supplies!

I'm a big fan of these pencils, and I use them for my graphite drawings. They're just so smooth and pleasing to use! I have the big tin set, but not the 10B, 11B or 12B pencils! They look awesome and I really want to get them but none of the local stores around my area seem to have them. I guess I'll be going online for those. Funnily enough I most often use the 3B and 5B pencils, which you didn't have in your collection, lol! I love your drawing, that 12B looks great for really dark areas. Is it easy to sharpen?
@AlexisCassandraArt
@AlexisCassandraArt 3 жыл бұрын
They are so impressive, I can't believe I never heard about them until people recommended them to me last year! For some reason, I'm obsessed with using the even-numbered grades(so that is what I mostly bought hahaha) but I can always add to the collection! To be honest I haven't tried sharpening the 12B yet, I'm kinda scared. It looks like a crayon! Once I get the courage, I will let you know!😂

@@AlexisCassandraArt Sharpening the 9B 10B 11B and 12B is best with a mill sharpner. I use such a sharpner because with a regular metal blade sharpner its a bit tricky to break the point.

@AlexisCassandraArt
@AlexisCassandraArt 3 жыл бұрын
thank you for watching and subscribing!💙 you're amazing! That was my signo uni-ball pen, it is a whilte gel pen. I like to use it for highlights sometimes but be aware it can scratch off so it is not archival and best not to use for finished work, I was being lazy and experimental though! I will keep that in mind for future videos, but for a quick explanation, white hair still needs a little bit of light shading (if you change the reference photo to greyscale you will see some shadows). I have drawn some wrinkles in my new Rosa Parks portrait videos, but I will need to do an actual tutorial on it sometime!
