Dear Mr. McCollum, you've become a curse to me. We've founded a modest gun collection with my father. And by the time I was feeling I'm sattisfied, you instilled a desire to get a collection of french guns into me. So, my Berthier 1892 Musketoon is on the way, I'm in the process of choosing a Gras and activelly looking for a Lebel. And it doesn't end there. God bless my wife who (mostly) silently tolerates it.

Am I the only one that would have loved to take the Forgotten Weapons history class in college by Professor Ian? I think it would have been way better than any other history class I ever did. Imagine the props he could bring in for every war being taught in that class? The field trips to the gun range would be epic. Oh, and yes of course Ian has a carbine version that does not exist. I knew at some point something like that would be said by Ian. he always has a rifle that does not exist in his collection.

When I was a kid, my grandpa told several times that when he joined the army after being evacuated from Kharkov , during the distribution of weapons, no one wanted to get a "French rifle" and an "American submachine gun" because it was heavy. About the "French rifle" he said that it had a tubular magazine, and later, I realized that he was talking about the Lebel rifle. And he joined the army in 1942.

2:00 I think it’s worth remembering that Napoleon’s campaigns are barely 50 years old at this time and that those campaigns were done with spotty at best logistical support from France itself. The modern supply chain was really only made possible by the advent of the railway, and before that, armies mostly had to carry whatever they needed on campaign. While it seems unfathomable today to not have a good way to resupply troops with ammunition, it was entirely possible that an army might only be able to resupply its cartridges by seizing enemy stocks of powder and lead to cast into balls.

They could 'forage' for food (read 'confiscate from villages and towns they passed through or stopped at. If they were being polite they might even pay). This was one of the reasons that Napoleon broke his Armee down into separate, smaller corps, each moving along a different route. The food stockpiles from a town that might feed a corps for the better part of a week would barely feed the whole army for a day. Also, smaller units move faster. And anyone pursuing his armies had to drag their whole supply train with them, as all of the viable routes had been stripped bare of supplies by the faster moving corps. I really pity the common peasants. They got shafted no matter what happened.

A point that most moderns do not think of. The majority of churches and cathedrals had roofing with lead sheet. For centuries before the Napoleonic era, when weight for trebuchets was needed,or lead for muskets, finding sufficient lead for a battle was likely going to be nearby. Gunpowder in barrels was much lighter to transport by horse or mule cart. Plus flints. Not much to concern oneself over compared to any modern military.

Ian's skill and expertise at presenting are perhaps best illustrated by the factcthat i don't particularly *care* about French bolt action rifle development, and I watched this video all the way through to the end, being fascinated and informed the whole while. And now I have a *much* better appreciation if why the Lebel is the rifle it is - even more than the oft-mentioned, "Well, that's what you get when you're first to market!" is the point (that I previously didn't know) that the Boss said, "Give me a rifle in 5 months!" when the design team had *literally* just settled on a *bullet* (not even a full cartridge). In perspective, this would have been like the Army Chief of Staff announcing in October 2017 that he wanted to see the final downselected winning designs from the NGSW program * (the version of the LMG, rifle *and* cartridge that would end up going into production and service) no later than the end of March 2018. . * Note that the *RFP* for *any* component of the NGSW program hadn't even been written in October 2017...

@@jubuttib Picking the bullet diameter (8mm) and role (infantry rifle) pretty much narrows down the other parameters, ballistically. Now you're down to "fiddly bits" like jacket composition, and in the 1880s, most of the other factors will end up being in a *very* narrow range.

@@nichevo1 Name the rifle program that went from, "we have a bullet - not even a case, but just a bullet" to, "we have a prototype rifle that is effectively in as close.to.final form as possible before actually going into mass production" that quickly. Designing a sheet metal buzzgun like the PPS42 or the Sten Gun using a well developed cartridge and decades of experience in SMG we can draw on is completely different from a paradigm shifting infantry rifle that was "first in class" almost across the board.

Firstly, to Ian: Excellent packaged summary of a subject not usually on my radar. Good stuff. To “Parrot Raiser”: A lot of what looks like "smoke" from "smokeless" powder is water-vapour condensing out. If you fire the sanm ammo in the steamy swamps of Florida and the desert fastness of southern Arizona in summer, there will be a noticeable difference in the "signature". The supersonic pressure wave from the muzzle blast alone will do interesting things to humid air, by itself. Smokeless powder is a self-contained fuel and oxidizer in one substance. Most of the combustion product is a mix of Carbon Dioxide and water vapour. There is some particulate matter leaving the barrel; everything from partially burned powder to "stabilizers", metallic "dust" from the projectile, etc. "Smokeless" is "mostly true", as they say in the social media bun-fights.

There is no real need for him to do so, as there is so much information out there from very good authors already. Ian wrote his book because of the total LACK of good (or indeed any!) source information that was not written in French.

@@ronal8824 France: "Those Prussians showed the world that a breach loader was good -- develops the Chassepot. Ah, metallic cartridges -- makes the Gras, based on the Chassepot. Ah, repeating would be good -- modifies the Gras with the Kropotchek repeating system. Hey, we have smokeless powder! -- builds the Lebel, still recognizably descended from the Chassepot. Wouldn't a self loading rifle be good? Makes the RSC, partly built from Lebel rifles. They started with a needle gun and worked their way to a long stroke gas piston rotating bolt rifle with a manlicher clip, basically the direct ancestor of the M1 Garand and from there the AK47.

Hey Ian. Very informative as always. One quick side info; Andre Berthier was the creator and the project manager for the coversion of 0.45 Ottoman Martinis to 7.65 mm Mauser in 1910s. He did this during his 10 year or so service with the Ottoman government. More info in the book I’m currently reading. Cheers

I would have loved to say this at school! "Wasn't able to make a PP-Presentation, so I brought live weapons!" (After that the police would haul me away - even if I didn't bring any ammo! But the looks on the teachers' faces would have probably been worth it :D ) - Great presentation nontheless :) ps: I live in Germany, carrying weapons around is a no-go here, unless you are police (or have a gun-license, which aren't granted to people who don't need guns for their jobs, like bodyguards etc.)...it doesn't matter if loaded or not! You have to have them in a locked case or bag, till you are at a gun-range (or out on the field/in the forest if you are a hunter!) If you shoot for sport you gain a gun-possession-license (Waffenbesitzkarte!), so you may keep weapons at home (in a gun-vault and separate one for ammo!) and take them (in a locked case or bag) to a gunsmith or to the range!

Back in my grade 10 history class, during the fist world war section they brought in a Maxim gun, flare gun, some soldiers stuff, a couple helmets and bayonets, an artillery shell and a British grenade (all obviously disarmed, removed explosives' and firing pins, welded bolts.) For the sake of having objects to show what things looked like. Before anyone asks, no not America, I'm from Canada. Three or four schools shared the stuff and had a curator who took care of everything.

I started watching for the historical context of the weapons, but now I'm interested in manufacturing logistics, rifling twist rates, bullet jacket design, every aspect of mechanical reliability, the often colourful personalities behind the development... AND the historical context! :P

I think he did great on a short notice speech. I don't know how hard it is to build a PowerPoint presentation. I k ow how hard it is to play music to a video. I was in a band that had a one hour video that we played with that had to be timed to the millisecond along with a light show. It took months of practice for a tour. We would have 40 or so monitors until we went to a projector and saved time and space.
