Grass Tennis Court Maintenance (With Graham & Ben)
In this video I talk to our Groundsmen, Graham an Ben, about how they maintain 10 beautiful grass courts at The Avenue Lawn Tennis Club.
They explain how they became groundsmen, what it takes to keep the lawns looking great and playing well including how often they mow the grass, what length they cut it to, how they paint the lines straight Amongst other things!
Let me know in the comments if you have any questions about the grass courts and I’ll pass them over to Graham and Ben!
As I menton in the video, Ben produces Drum and Bass music, if you fancy giving it a listen head over to his soundcloud: soundcloud.com/feuture

Thanks a lot Graham and Ben for all your hard work. I always love playing on our great grass courts. (We also have some of the best artificial clay courts.) Its what makes our club special.

One thing i've never understood is, what do they do when the grass gets worn down to the soil? (particularly around the baselines) Do they just leave them? Do they wait until they can over-seed them later? or do they have some special kind of method we've never heard of to deal with it? Because I can't imagine playing in potential divots is very fun.

Great video. Would love to know their take on the supposed speed reductions at Wimbledon, whether the Avenue courts are faster, etc.

It’s a very good question, I’ll ask them their views along with a couple of players that have played at Wimbledon and on our courts for a comparison!

I’m still trying to figure out how grass courts can be played on year round without killing the grass? At Wimbledon for the two week tournament the courts are nothing but dirt after the players get through with them. So are these courts just played on sparingly throughout the year?

No we have a grass court season from April through to September and as we don't move the same as pro's we aren't as aggressive there not as much wear also with Wimbledon those court court 1 and center especially are designed to play the best they can be 2 weeks a year where as the the avenue are designed to play on throughout the summer at the end of the season they get fixed up for the following season where Wimbledon start again from scratch you would probably find that Wimbledon will use r9 all over and not put the r25 on the baseline as the r9 is a better surface.

Court keeper here, in the uk we can have grass courts all year. UFDR grass down to 8-10mm is absolutely fine. Wimbledon is a different beast clegging into the range of concrete lol they would wreck any court luckily they can rip it up and start again every year :)

I live in Spain so I don't have the luck to be able to play in grass at all. I wish some day I can visit the UK and be able to play in such beautiful grass. How possible is it to rent this kind of courts without being a club member?

You can find plenty of cheap public grass courts in Australia where certain parts of the country have some of the world's best environmental conditions for growing grass tennis courts; from statistics I found on the internet there's more than 150 clubs that have natural grass and nearly all allow public play for a very small fee. There are about 50 clubs in the south west corner of Western Australia, about 20 clubs in south eastern South Australia, about 20 in southern New South Wales and about 70 in the northern part of Victoria. Most are in relatively small towns and some of them have up to fifty courts. While I cannot confirm the absolute accuracy of the above club statistics, I have been to plenty of the clubs in Victoria and can confirm they are plentiful and are great courts to play on.
