I was at Ventura ‘84 and ‘85. Man those were such perfect weekends. The campground was so chill. All night long, early morning wake and bake, walking on the railroad tracks with friends and strangers…the fire on the mountain across the 101 freeway during Fire on the Mountain…. I drive past Ventura fairgrounds at least 25 times a year on the 101 and I always smile….some of my finest memories.

Jerry's ability to play higher than a kite is uncanny. Love this guy!

china rider He was weaning off at this point, but I agree. The 81-84 shows his playing was still amazing while really high

You're so right! This period of Dead has always amazed me because Jerry was well on his way to near Death by 85, he looked horrible but his playing was still incredible.

Yep. The red shirt meant STOP! I love the closeups of Jer. You can see just how hurting he is, as any recovering addict can see, but he’s so focused and really beaming music!

I cannot recall the issue or name of article (FUCK)! but there is a picture of Bobby with the band where he is grinning ear to ear and his pupils BIG AS SAUCERS. It's apparent he's on shrooms. It's pretty hilarious. Wish I had the link to send ro you....just sayin'....

Hey now I was at these two shows did a drop of liquid on the way into the show Saturday they opened up with One Mo Saturday Night into Fire on the Mountain you can’t get any better than that to start a show we camped in the parking lot and and partied hard all weekend Ventura was a great venue to see the boys we called it the Dust Bowl! After the show they showed movies in the lot like REEFER MADNESSES and Mickey Mouse and all for the cost of a ticket for like $20 oh boy the good ole days Peace from Hawaii ☮️

Thanks for the video. I know I attended this show, as it was the day after Live Aid, but I can't claim to recall much! I do know we had a good time, but this wonderful recording helps me confirm that! Jerry does look like he's hurting, but his playing sparkles as ever, especially, of course, in the excellent LLR!

+Dominic Garrett I began listening in '87, and the '85 summer shows were an early hook... at that point, with pretty plentiful availability of the SBD's, to my young ears, '85 was the '70's of the 80's (if that makes sense)!
@denniscampbell22558 жыл бұрын
+Graham Skardon Same here. I started listening to the Dead in 86, 4/2/87 Worcester was my first show. by the end of the year I had most of the boards from summer tour 85. 7/1/85 Merriweather is still my favorite show for the year. There were lots of crunchy boards around from 85, thanks Dan.

I have to bust out my old ticket stubs to remember which day I went to here.... I'm thinkin' it was Sat... but it may have been Sun... either way... one of my first shows, we eventually worked our way up front for a while( yes, I was one of those.. only for this show though :- ) all I remember is that I was totally blown away by the whole scene... I think I still have a 'music never stopped' tie dye from that show in the closet somewhere...many silk screens, lol.... great memories

Does anyone remember the Hendrix cover band in campground area from these shows? Time flowed like liquid then. Now I’m so old daytime dead would be my only option cause I need to sleep by 10. Thanks for the memories especially in this covid19 time of such uncertainty

Joey Maxon what up Joey. My comment is directly speaking about attending a day time grateful dead show at the ventura fairgrounds in 1985. 1985 was me at 20. At 20 I could stay out all night and burn candle at both ends. It’s been 35 years and things change, so enjoy your youth, later 🤙🏽

I think Jerry drew extra inspiration from being high and being on the stage high. Just my opinion but from what I've read and reading his interinterviews about drugs, along with the obvious issues of dependence he got off on playing high. So yes, he doesn't look great but he's probably happily high. With the exception of weening off and quitting he always had as many drugs as he wanted. As any user knows, being strung out with plenty of drugs around is much different psychologically then not having. Jerry could take the stage all banged up but comforted by the fact that's he's covered.

Anyway, this was OUR Live Aid !! Great to see big Steve too. For a second I thought he was gonna do a Garcia Rig Rundown. That’d had been grate!
