RIP Dickie Betts, the best improvisational guitar player in Southern Rock!
@GratefulJim499 жыл бұрын
I was about 15 feet from the stage when they played this. This was after midnight on Sunday, June 10, 1973. The show had started with Wet Willie from about 12:30 to 2:30, the Allman Bros from 3-6:30 and the Dead from 7-12:30. Then Dickie came out and jammed with the Dead for another hour or so. Definitely a great day in my rock'n'roll history.

Wow! I was there! In fact,, I was so very lucky to have had 2 friends of mine with me, and they hoisted me up on their shoulders and I managed to sit right at the front side of Gregg's Hammond B-3 organ!!! And, well, I was bothered by the stage bouncers at all, because I behaved myself. Or, I should say, behaved myself by staying put! But,,,, I took a look at Gregg playing, and I noticed right near me, just half an arms length away, on the top edge of the organ, just above my head,, was a can of Budweiser, 2 white face cloths, a pack of Marlboro smokes,,,,, and,,,, a HASHPIPE! And if you're wondering if I grabbed them all as souvenirs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, YEP,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I WAS A BADDDDDDD BOYYYYYY!!! If you were near the left front of the stage, and somehow you remember this guy climbing up, and sitting at the Hammond organ......................................................... it was me............ at 19 .......................... now................. 63!!! What a show!!! And in fact, it was at that show,, that Dickey Betts announced the soon to be released "BROTHERS & SISTERS" album,,, and,,,, the song JESSICA was first heard!!! FACT!!! It was on that tour that Jessica was performed!!!

Some of us that were kids back then can still perform, and have near-perfected the duplication of these songs, albeit on a local level. Here in Detroit, people still love both bands. And our ten to fifteen year seniors dig it, to no end. Club gigs, outdoor festivals, etc. Don’t get me wrong. These guys created it. We only pay it tribute. But we love them so much, we perform it faithfully.

Gotta love Bob Weir's chunky rhythm playing. Keeps it flowing forwards and upwards. I WAS lucky enough to be at Watkins Glen and see these guys jam together. If memory serves, the Dead's soundcheck the night before the "festival" turned into a major concert in and of itself.

Lately I have to thank youtube because whenever I see Duane or Dickey playing with the Dead I want to listen. I said I never owned and Dead Lp's but one but I am not Stupid. The man can play. That was the first time I heard that and Jerry is just terrific. I kept waiting for Dickey to show up wondering if I would tell the difference between the two. Oh man. when that Sunburst Les Paul came in I thought I died and went to guitar heaven. Just Awesome man. freaking awesome.

But then I smoked some PCP not knowing what it was. Ended up in the hospital. They shot me up with something & I came down but was still pretty high.
