Not sure how deep you've dived so far, but Super Session by Bloomfield, Kooper & Stills is unbelivable. I think Althea is one of the greatest songs to exist, but the Dead are not really mu cup of tea. If you listen to Super Session, hopefully Albert's Shuffle (the first song) will knock you off your feet and then His Holy Modal Majesty will scoop you up again. And of course after that you will discover each individual act from Super Session, and get in to CSN (if you haven't already), etc. It's a journey my friend, and I was mos def born decades too late...

One of things that make them so great is that as magnificent as they were, Jerry and the guys made it look easy. No histrionics, no one running from edge of the stage to the other……no gimmicks, just crazy good music. They always left me with the impression that it was never about them. It was about their audience, and the family just having a good f’ing time for three or four hours.

I was heading towards the stage on the floor of Autzen Statium as they started up this song, and Phil's melodies were as waves of velvet enveloping the entire space we were all gathered in. It was like a beckoning of the most soothing sound you have ever heard, calling and surrounding in the most heavenly way possible, verging on being visible. It was one of the most vivid experiences I have ever had, and whenever I hear this song and close my eyes it's like I am there again.

Phil was so underated he was always there. His bass was not to be denied. There was only one bass player that I'd call his superior and that was the other worldly Late John Entwhistle. The only bass that could play that thing line a lead. He was unbelievable IMHO. But Phil was a musical virtuoso and played competently 7 other classical concert quality instruments. He was a true musicians musician. He could have been on tour with an orchestra playing the Cello or any other number of instruments he was a master of. Yet he decided his love was with the Dead .

So effortless for Jerry to bring it over and over, many try to follow but no one is Jerry, with such ease he is in a class all his own, effortless to be the best, with a band his equal, young and strong. Makes it look so easy and smooth, just like good dancers, master of all at these darn tunes. How happy we would all be if someone could really fill Jerry's shoes, but alas the Grateful Dead were a phenomena that is no more, and what we have now is sure good stuff, just not the Grateful Dead, my heart is broken forever. Happy there is something going on to carry on, but it will never be the dead, gosh they were just so well there are no words to describe the years we had them, I bet the stones fans are feeling this too right now. I am glad they have not had to feel it for a long time.

How can ya put an ad right in the middle of Althea? C'mon man. By the way, I still really miss Jerry. My heart hurts when I think too much about it. Jerry visited me in a dream a while after he left us. It was like I was at a show but in the wilderness. We ran into each other and I said hi.
