I was 14 years old at this show at Giants. The spiraling ramps up to each level at that sataium. Never met a nicer bunch of people than in that lot. It was special. They gypsy market and givingness. People would give you the shirt off thier back there. The spinners, tapping to the whirling dervishes and their method. In dirty pools of rain water. Spells cast in great formulas of the songs, - a great skeleton key to your life personally, even if the song was not about you.

I've been a Head for over thirty years, and this show is a perfect illustration of one of the best things about them. At any point, you can switch into listening to just one instrument, and whether it's Phil or Bobby or Vince, there's something interesting going on. You can kind of go from wide to narrow, and find something seriously cool either way. Even when Jerry's neck-deep in a solo, you can switch to Phil and, yup, it's cool.

I grew up in a Deadhead household, been listening to Dick's Picks since I was six, constantly listen to soundboards, and declare my love of the Dead with my clothing. But I've never been able to pin down *WHY* I love them so much. I think this is why! Each song is just a ton of great improv songs layered over each other, becoming infinitely greater than the sum of its parts. Every band member is a genius in their own way, and they all just mesh so magically well together!

@@thecenter672 Perfectly put. The Dead transcended technique. No they all weren't virtuosos but let's not forget that these guys were also some of the premiere songwriters of the 20th century. Phish for instance, may be better technical musicians but they can't write a hook to save their lives. No one thirty years from now will know a single Phish song other than Phish fans. And The Dead could write a hook. Let's not forget that - they could endlessly jam and they could also write an earworm that you couldn't get out of your head, as good as any top 10 pop hit.

Then we drove straight to Arcata and moved to Humboldt with 4 other brothers. Next was JGB @ Electric on the Eel River and a weekend at Squaw. Whoa!!! Had to choose between Shoreline and Cal Expo. OOPS!! Missed that sick Shoreline madness. Anyways...never caught that Dead Rueben. Plenty of JGB ones at Warfield and Ventura County fairgrounds. At least Buckeyes version is on pro video.

Jose Villarreal -I agree. Having seen this band and GD since about 1969, I think JM is the only other guitarist since Jerry, who has captured the essence and soul of the group. All the other guitar players in between have been well-known and superb musicians, but none have really breathed it in like JM. He has a great PRS guitar, but I’d like to hear Rosebud once in a while. But not important. I can honestly say this is the best incarnation of GD since 1995. I don’t really miss Phil. I know he’s older and I respect his contributions, but I think they hit the mark with Oteil. Jeff is the best keyboard player they ever had. ( my opinion) Lots of people still talking about Jerry. Time to move on, JM is now the frontman. I’m just glad they are still making music. I think they should get together with Robert Hunter and make another album of original music. One day he will pass away too like the rest.

I went to the Movie Theater last week to see this and the audio quality was absolutely jaw dropping! EVEN This youtube version is also remastered, you can hear Hornsby so prominently in the mix.....you can even hear bobby actually playing! I have never heard the Grateful dead sound so good live. (I was at Giants stadium on this night and it did not sound this good). Its a shame the Dead didn't record all of their shows in 48 track. This is not too be missed

The GD did record all of their shows, at least the board mix. Im sure their are lots of people who can tell you the details but I think they recorded the stereo mix and not the individual channels but o could be wrong.

I absolutely loved Hornsby with the Dead. With that being said I mean his piano and keyboarding talent and NOT the accordion. I was on tour those years when Hornsby filled in after Brent died. Hornsby fit like a hand in a glove with the Dead on Piano /keyboards imho, but I didn't like the accordion with the Dead and when they found Vince, Hornsby went to accordion. I like Vince Welnick but man if you can't have Mydland, Godchaux , or McKernan Hornsby was high & tight. Whoa, excuse my rant🤣

I only ever saw Brent and I thought he was great! My first show was in 1980. Between 1980 and 1984 I saw about a dozen shows :-) so unfortunately I didn’t see these later shows but I just love Hornsby on the keyboard! 😊🎹

@@lauramiller7827 those were great years you saw and with all due respect, Jerry was slipping quite a bit late 80's until his demise. Sometimes it was very hard to watch and listen to. That china had him locked up tight and his diabetes was kicking his ass. Sometimes it was very sad, and at the same time tour got really dark, lots of hard drug use was changing the entire vibe at shows. It was clear the wheels were falling off. Still ...what a ride.

I have a friend at work. I'm a 42 year old male and she is a female in her early 20s. She mentioned to me she was having a rough go of things lately. I had no business asking about specifics and with that had little practical advice I could give her. So I gave her one of the best gives one human could give another. She threw off major hippy vibes but had never heard of the dead. This generation! Sheesh. So I recommended she listen to 5/8/77 scarlet-fire. The next day at work she is smiling ear to ear saying " the music is sooo happy! It made me so happy and set me up for a great day!!!!" Today I recommended eyes. No specific eyes. Any eyes. I told her "this band has literally saved countless lives. No other band has the potential to have such an impact on a person in a positive way. I've been through shit in life, and the dead always helped me through" She is a really really sweet person who smiles and treats everyone with respect but it breaks my heart thinking about the kind of "help" or "advice" she must receive sometimes when she reaches out to people. Thank God she has good older female friends who would kill someone who tried to do her harm. But this was my gift- not creepy, no side effects yet potentially life altering in profound ways. If my young hostess friend comes across this message, you have a lot of friends who love you because you are so positive and friendly. You make people's days happier. You deserve the same. Hope this helps- the dishwasher

One of my favorite versions. Jerry’s playing on brilliant display. Bruce undoubtedly had an influence on his style during this era. Instead of playing B minor during the jam, Jerry is heavily playing in the relative major scale (D maj7) which gives a much more jazzy feel. Absolutely beautiful!!

I was at this show when they played with Bruce Hornsby - One of the greats. We started in seats in the upper deck of Giants Stadium but (like so many) jumped down onto the field...Managed to work our way up to the front of the crowd to approx 20 feet or so underneath Jerry...If memory serves, it's been 30 years. Nevertheless, as close to the band as you could get. Ran into some college friends who (don't remember seeing me, they were all on god-knows-what drugs...) Easily one of my favorite shows

I saw this tour at Wembley Arena. After seeing Brent Midland live along the West Coast, seeing the new line up was eerie, but perhaps that’s because I was on acid. I had heard of Hornsby, of course. As his tone rolled out - we were flabbergasted, but in deep mourning for Midland. Especially missing his unique voice in higher harmony parts.
