"Box Of Rain" was written at the time Bassist Phil Lesh's father was dying. It had the effect of easing the pain Phil was feeling, and helping to cope with all that his father meant to him. It was also a big favorite of Dead Heads at shows, including my girlfriend at the time. She later passed and "Box Of Rain" was played at her memorial service.

"Such a long long time to be gone \ And a short time to be there" -- American Beauty is also the name of the type of rose flower pictured on the cover of the album. Simple and profound.
