I was extremely fortunate to have my very first concert be the Grateful Dead when I was 18. It was the day after high school graduation and I decided to go sort of on a lark, to do something different before I went to college. I left that show sunburnt, filthy and completely changed. I ended up taking a year off of undergrad to follow them cross country. Of all the things I've have done in my life, nothing, absolutely nothing, will ever top that year.

Like pretty much all Deadheads, I absolutely love this song, but I’d shy away from recommending it to someone as an introduction to the Dead. However, the person who suggested this must have known that you’d appreciate a band where each instrument is worth focusing on at almost any given moment. In other words, I’m very glad to see how much you like it. You get it, man!

@j. late here , anyway - Yea , it's ' mood music'. to me. their best stuff pretty much all is. IF yer wrasling with the dog or something, tunes like this just aren't gonna fit. Of course this tune specific has a back Story, inspired by a significant movie. ' on the Beach' 1959.

A deep end song for a first listen but it shows you the breadth of what the Grateful Dead could do. I saw them several times back in the day. Truly, there was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert.

There are 2 drummers. Bill Kreutzman and Mickey Hart. A good next song to hit would be China Cat Sunflower/ I Know You Rider live from the Europe '72 album. It's actually 2 songs ,they jam from one to the other but that's always the way it's done live.

I'd suggest the "China/Ryder" from Alpine Valley 89'. The video is on youtube. My 1st full tour.

@@feetheweasel Would accept that but in my mind the one on Europe 72 is better and there is no good reason to see the Dead. They don't do anything interesting on stage but play.

I suggest China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider from 8/27/72 (Veneta OR). In the video version, there's a number of people in the audience dancing topless/nude. (You'll have to read the backstory to understand.) Seems like Jerry G extended this version just because... Multi-track audio and among my favs.

I'm going to see Dead and Company this weekend, featuring one of the two drummers (the other bowed out on this farewell tour) plus GD rhythm guitarist Bob Weir as well as John Mayer. When you buy tickets, they are for both nights (not separately), which may seem strange to the uninitiated, but back in the day, if you went to four consecutive nights you wouldn't see a single song repeated as each show was unique, which was a big part of the appeal.

The Dead is known for their jams, and yes the band has two drummers. I've been to a Dead concert, it's a unique experience. Lots of live footage out there. Truckin' is a good song by them and I found a live video, it took place in NY 10/30/80. Cheers.

One of the coolest things about the Grateful Dead is that each player is doing something different and yet it all works perfectly together. This version of "Morning Dew', from Barton Hall at Cornell University, 5/8/77, is a legendary performance from the band. This recording is cataloged at The Library of Congress as an important National Artifact. I can imagine the staffers dancing around on a Friday afternoon down in the basement of the LOC. LOL. Saw The Dead 50 times and got to see five or six "Morning Dew's", and it was always a treat. This is a cover song, originally written by Canadian singer/songwriter Bonnie Dobson.

Deep cut for the first hearing. Very wide variety of styles with this group. One thread through all of the hundreds of songs is that you can dance to all of them. Even Morning Dew, however I usually sat down and listened to Jerry pour it out both vocally and on the guitar. Usually played in the latter half of the 2nd set (at least since my first show in ‘83) so it was a sweeeet break before finishing out the evening dancing.

Also, the song is about a post nuclear war conversation from inside a bomb shelter more or less. In other words, what good is living if you are the only ones left

Here's another suggestion for another song by the "Dead" if interested "Grateful Dead - Truckin' (New York, NY 10/30/1980) (Official Live Video)" however this is a live performance, and I think the quality is pretty good too.

...and so it begins....this live recording has now been saved by the Library of Congress...not sure that it's their greatest live performance, but it's up there....the Scarlet Begonias>Fire on the Mountain off this is amazing....but it's quite long....**personally my favorite version of this song is from Europe '72....or the version from 2 From The Vaults that the power gets cut off due to curfew at that time (1968)

Cornell 5/8/77 one of the best versions and Betty board recordings of all time. One needs to earn this Dew to appreciate it. It’s out of this world. I had my daughter born to the Scarlett Fire from this recording and she’s my little Charlotte Begonias. Listen to the whole show and keep going down the rabbit hole. Each member of the band is jamming in their own right and it melds beautifully together into one of the most epic jams of all time.

As others have pointed out, this is a deeply tragic, post-apoc song. Supposedly, Gerry Garcia, the singer and guitarist, would often need a break after performing this to recompose himself, since it would shake him so deeply. (Your projected lyrics are pretty lousy, by the way, or maybe you would have some idea of what the song is about)
