Jerry was so unique. I was very lucky to see Grateful Dead close to 40 times from Summer of 1990 until Spring 1995... my early 20s...

I only got to see the around 100 times from 1967 to 1987. Couldn't take the giant crowds any more, although I did see them in 73 that had 600,000 there. In the old days I once sat on the stage right in front of Garcia all through the NRPS and Dead concert.

Dude, the Grateful Dead was the epitome of psychedelia. In the early days they played at the acid tests for Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters. I recommend reading the Tom Wolfe book “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test” for Further information. Further. Get on the bus!

A few things. First - thanks for doing this version - a great one and on video. I was at this show! Was my sophomore year at UCLA and my best from from high school flew out - I picked him up from the airport that morning - we hung out, went to the show, and I took him back to the airport after the show - less than 24 hours. Also - yes - they all - except the keyboard player who joined in 1979 - did LSD - they were the house band at the ‘acid tests’ in late 60s - where perhaps they would play for hours - or only 10 mins and just stop.

btw theirs 2 guitars in the Dead. Bob Weir on rhythm and Jery on lead. Bob never played lead but they intertwine a lot when jerry is also playing rhythm.

There's a clip of Sugar Magnolia with Weir isolated and he is playing some lead and you can Jerry playing a very complimentary almost lead as a rhythm behind it.

The Grateful Dead were the house band for the Acid Tests in San Francisco in the 60s. They appeared on an episode of “Hugh Hefner’s Playboy After Dark” where (allegedly) they put acid in the coffee so everyone on set was tripping. I’ve seen it. It sure seems like it. Oh, and also their sound guy and financial benefactor in the early years was Owsley Stanley. I’ll let you google him.

The answer to your question about whether all of them did LSD, the Grateful Dead were the house band for the acid tests in Haight Ashbury in the 60s. The only exception was Ron Pigpen Mckernan who didn't do acid but died in 1972 due to his immense appetite for alcohol.

@@wowplayer7986 Well Owsley didn't personally work for the Dead lol he was one of the Merry Pranksters running around with Kesey Mountain Girl and Neal Cassady. The Dead just happened to intertwine with the pranksters and met Owsley who was working patiently to create the perfect acid hit.

It always seems strange to me that this one became so popular to younger dead heads. It's great, but to me, the song is nowhere near as strong as a lot of the earlier stuff. A good live songs as a dance number though, and I do like it these days, just puzzled that it's one of the first that people get to. The whomp, whomp, whomp bit is Garcia with his auto-wa on his guitar.

All psychedelic rock bands were inspired by hallucinogens, and Gratefull Dead was the pioneer in that genre. Martin Scorsese is planning to make a movie of this band. Yet for me the greatest psychedelic band is british band CREAM - "WhiteRoom" is absolutely one of the greatest songs ever.

Not an advertisement, but for a really good selection of Grateful Dead shirts, Liquid Blue is an excellent site, dozens of styles. "Shakedown Street" eventually became the name for the vending area and mini-economy that followed the Grateful Dead from town-to-town. All, or most of the magic, of The Dead was coming out of Jerry Garcia's Guitar. Phil Lesh on the far left of the stage, in the tie-die, is the Bassist. Jerry's Guitar is a custom piece from Master Luthier Doug Irwin known as the "Tiger" Guitar, due to the artwork on the access cover. My favorite guitar of Jerry's. Since you asked, they ALL dosed, a lot, Phil for EVERY show, Bobby too. Jerry and Brent were into smoking heroin, not injecting. Early in the band there was a guy named Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, he didn't do many drugs, Booze was his main vice. He died of Liver disease at the ripe old age of 27. A member of the 27 Club.

People used to think Jerry was probably tripping for shows, but he told a story of how he had a bad experience back in the late 60’s and never tried it again. He had eaten some cake backstage that was dosed (unknown to him!) and later on somehow imagined there was a Mafia hitman in the crowd who was out to get him. After that he thought if he played great enough the guy would change his mind. He said “I thought I was literally playing for my life” !😊

"Did they all do acid?' Is the Pope Catholic. In the mid-late 1960s they were the house band at Ken Kesey's Acid Test parties.held in the San Francisco area. These were all-nighter (or multi-day) parties at which acid was virtually mandatory. By the mid 70s they had pretty much moved on to cocaine, heroin, and booze (and of course pot). By the time of this performance, Jerry had gone through rehab and was pretty much straight. Don't know anything about the rest of them (except that keyboardist Brent Midland died in 1990 of an accidental OD).

The Dead use to be a secret lsd party. They use to play at the Acid Test in the 60s they were like the first hippies who started the whole hippy movement. The band didnt do acid on stage after the 60s from what I know. In 1987 Jerry was a heroin and coke addict, he loved speed balls whatever that is. The rest of the band was solber in 1987 Bob Weir was a health nut then and still today. Brett Midland the keyboard player of the 80s-90s died of heroin overdose. They had many keyboard players and they all died of heroin. Their sound guy Stanley Owsley was an acid chemist who made most of the lsd in the 60s. He is the one who drew the steal your face logo you speak of. You should be able to order a shirt from dead net. BTW shakedown street is part of the disco dead era of the late 70s, later shakedown is a term deadheads use, its a gathering point in the dead parking lot where people walked around and vend food, cloths, drugs and all sorts of stuff. Deadheads use to sell stuff in the parking lots before and after shows to make money to get to the next show.

in 87 3/4 of the audience is tripping -i would have been if i were at this show they were the original acid test band in 65/66 they dipped the tickets in acid and the audience and the musicians all tripped and some of the improvised concert stuff is LEGENDARY remember acid popularized by the beatles was LEGAL UNTIL 1967 I SAW THE DEAD 78 TIMES IN 9 YEARS I DID NOT TRIP AT 3 OF THOSE SHOWS I AM NOT A WILD EYED ANYTHING YOUNG MAN I HAVE NEVER EVEN HAD A SPEEDING TICKET I HAVE 3 COLLEGE DGREES AND TAUGHT AT THE GIFTED HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLGE LEVELS I HAVE LECTURED IN THE FORMER SOVIET UNION AT COLLEGESFOR THE PEACE CORPS AND TRAVELLED AROUND THE WORLD EXPLORING AND I AM NOT A WILD EYED ANYTHING acid and mushrooms are not to get out of control they are an intellectual exploration my young friend when done properly i tripped at several shows last year and i will be 67 next birthday read up on the psychedelic revolution my friend the merry pranksters, timothy leary, ken kesey (who wrote one flew over the cuckoos nest -famous play and movie) etc... do not call us names like wildeyed please!!
