I've listened to 8 Peggy-O's in a row and each one had been my favorite. Its tough being a Deadhead.

For people who expect a song to be just like on the record, it's an impossibility. The Grateful Dead taught me that different was A-OK.

Jerry Garcia is the Pablo Picasso of music. He can do the same solo a thousand times and it's amazing every time, and different every time, and worth repeated listening every time. Towering creative genius.

Jerry's guitar work on this particular version of Peggy-O is so refined and perfect you can feel his soul being poured out all over the place

I used to seek out versions of Peggy-O and have heard dozens. This remains one of the best, if not the best, one I've heard. Jerry just nails it beginning to end.

Fuckin Jerry can take a 3 Chord progression and break your heart in just a minute with his melodic riffs. Love listening to how this song progressed over the years

I had the pleasure of being at this show. You could hear a pin drop. That was the first time I had ever heard this song. Just my luck - I got the best version ever. :)

You are absolutely right about not hearing a pin drop. That went on to the late 1990s. Then concerts became a place to not shut up and talk over music.

Check out 7/3/78. A long lost Beatty Board now available on the July 78 Box set. That version has the most sublime, long and flowing Garcia solo with band locked in. The reading is also flawless.

Can someone help me find a particular version of this song? It feels like it came from ‘78 but I’m not sure. It’s jumpy with good bass. Jerry has a wild solo that is accompanied in a mind blowing way by piano... but it’s not jingly keyboard. It’s almost like the piano came to life and surprised everyone, including Jerry. It was WILD. I had a copy about 20 yrs ago but lost it and never knew where it came from (it was my dad’s).

This version is a perfect example of how bad Bob Weir sucks. All I can hear is his short, metallic, guitar bursts in the first few minutes. Then, Jerry takes over with a soaring, gorgeous solo. Then, more metallic Bob. I wonder how good the "Grateful Dead" could have been with a few more accomplished musicians to compliment Jerry. I think we get at least a glimpse with the various incantations of the Jerry Garcia Band. Grateful Dead. Too much Bob, too many drums. Oh, what could have been....

Frankie Frank He may be too harsh here, being how soft this song is. However, he is typically pretty awesome at complimenting Jerry and knowing his place. I think he's a fantastic rhythm guitarist. For example, in Brown eyed women from Cornell 77, he is perfect. I can't even fathom how that was a live recording.

Being in a band for decades is about way more than stock musical ability. It's about relationships and undefinable chemistry. It's impossible to ignore these factors. Bob has always been a unique player, who took chances, and the failures come with the victories.
