Good luck getting through that dry eyed. Hunter/Garcia creations are such opaque and masterful hero's journeys. Sometimes the journey doesn't end well, and is just so bittersweet, full of all this sadness and love and beauty so intertwined.

As I get older, different Dead songs have begun to resonate with me more… this song is one of them (Looks Like Rain, Broke down Palace, Mission in the Rain, Days Between are others). Simply A masterpiece.

You speak truth. This is Days Between alone made it worth me attending every 93-95 show I attended. Yes he was hurting and I wish he had taken a break but Jerry Garcia was playing. I was gonna be there feeling it. I live for moments like this still. Forever Grateful ⚡️⚡️

This is the greatest piece of music ever! Jerry belting those lyrics out is magical.

The story of the music is pretty interesting: Robert Hunter was hanging out at Jerry's house in 1982, and recorded as Jerry was playing a progression on the piano that Hunter found beautiful. Ten years later, he listened to the tape and set the poignant lyrics to it, and presented it to Jerry. He liked the words, but didn't like the music, but Hunter convinced him to try it out. Obviously, and quite thankfully, he kept it, and it became one of the last classic Garcia/Hunter songs. This version is particularly great, hauntingly beautiful.

The man had something so rare there's only one. Despite all the mileage he put on his physical being, he still grew deeper and more soulful. This was among a dwindling number of Great Performances with the GD. The segment from 6:02 though 6:36 shows the power of Jerry's ability to feel and convey a song like no one else.

Couldnt agree more. I was just saying to my friend.....you know how you hear a version of a song so many times and there will be that one song and/or solo that just grabs you and fills you up with emotions EVERY TIME? Thats the 6 min 15 second marker being the part that makes me lose it EVERY FCKIN TIME. the sound of his guitar on that tiny little 20 second solo is so sad and joyful at the same time, i lose it. its a sad solo. like a goodbye almost. Painful bliss.

@cozmcchuck: Agreed. I've been a fan (ok a Deadhead) for a long long time. Saw them play live since Garcia still had dark hair and Phil only had 4 strings. And I've watched some of the best play guitars with blazing technical skills. Yet that brief solo from 6:15 and ending with a chord strum like he's throwing dice - that's the kind that cannot be taught. Just the first line - 13 notes that end with a punctuation mark - says more than most players ever will.

Gave me chills starting about 5:37 I was at this show. I remember a huge lot scene up every street in front of the garden as far as you could see.. Also a good friend of mine that I had not seen In a while showed up out of nowhere and gave me some white blotter before the show then some more at intermission. I remember Jerry's face looked like a swirling tie dye off and on for the whole second set haha. I also remember some dead head near us on the floor passed me some tia stick to smoke and said " Its gonna be alright man" just as Jerry started playing Terrapin Station. haha good times indeed.

Greatest story ever told.... its funny how many of our dead show stories all seem to include (basically) a lot of the same details. Having a blast, a little spun, then a little too spun, then some cool ass older head that sees/feels your soul at that moment reminds you that it's all good and you couldn't be amongst a better bunch of folks A RARE AND DIFFERENT TUNE....

When I had the honor of going to Dead shows in the '90s (while taking these tiny black gel-caps of absolutely pure LSD-25), it felt like the Dead's improv jams were like a meandering, continuous musical river. And each of the actual songs seemed like random, magical islands that rose up out of this musical river from time to time. That's one of the many swirling, tripped-out details of the Dead shows I attended. Dead shows certainly sent my mind swirling off to another planet.

Yeah.. That much distortion through their weird "Direct" boxes they were both playing through around this time was not a good mix at all.. I think both their tones suffered greatly throughout the last year or so.. Guitars need speakers.. my opinion anyway
