These two Grateful Dead songs were often played together, as was the case on the Live Dead album. This was suggested after a donation and I was told this version was even better than the Live Dead album.

Well, everyone has their favorites but, for me, the Live/Dead versions of Dark Star/St Stephen/The Eleven/Turn On Your Lovelight are the quintessential versions. These were the very first Grateful Dead tunes I heard, way back in 1971, and they still, to this day, cause a physiological reaction that I can’t explain. Fantastic❤

The Eleven is called that simply because it is in the time signature of 11/8. apparently it is very difficult to get your head around and that's why Jerry didn't like playing it.
@otherstar1
@otherstar1 2 жыл бұрын
That, and with such a structure it took a LOT of practice for them to play it correctly, and that practice took away the spontaneity and ability to really "jam" on the song. St. Stephen is complex, but not as inflexible as The Eleven when it comes to jamming, which is why it was never fully retired. Oddly, Dead and Company (and I think Phil and Friends) both play St. Stephen>The Eleven and sometimes toss in the William Tell Bridge just for kicks.

The Eleven is in an “11” time signature (1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2) and they had to practice just this song to get it up to standards. Not something a bunch of stoners high on acid in the 60s wanted to keep up with! No one’s done a 77 Sugaree yet, get on it!

Great stuff after dropping some Orange Sunshine ☮ Here is the song list for disc 2. One long jam all the way through - 06/14/69: Disc 2: Dark Star > St. Stephen > The Eleven > Turn On Your Lovelight > Drums > Turn On Your Lovelight

With all due respect to Bill - music enjoyment is, after all, largely subjective - I think the version on the Live Dead album is far superior. The sound on Live Dead is clearer, and Jerry's guitar doesn't sound as rushed or speedy, and the vocals are more together. Plus at the end they fade straight into an amazing Turn On Your Love Light. There seems to be a feeling among many Deadheads that anything from a label released album is inferior to live soundboard or audience tapes. That gives short shrift to some remarkable "official" live tracks, and to some truly beautiful studio magic. I urge you to listen to the Live/Dead version of these songs followed by the Live/Dead version of Turn On Your Love Light. I also urge you to go listen to the album version of some of the other Grateful Dead songs you have reacted to. Though The Dead were, by the end of the 70s known as a live band, and derived great energy from their audience, sometimes the musicianship sounds tighter on the album versions of songs.

@@radarsmilin1179 yea, I like all the eras too, of course 😂 But before the heroin, during the acid tests, Jerry was just extra special to me. He had an energy only the young have. Oppositely, as he aged, in the 90’s, his voice had just started taking on this grandfatherly quality I particularly love. Especially with JGB. He had different eras of himself and they were all interesting but I have my favorites, with no shame 😉

@@Bear78420 I hear ya. The grandfatherly jer bear is probably most revered and iconic. I love the legion of Mary stuff personally but the later stuff has its special place for me too. In 2000 I sent two suitcases of my old tapes I used to trade to a prison for this guy I was a pen pal with. He got busted for a couple of bibles and wrote that the guards kept them for him in a rec room and he started a library system where prisoners could check out the different shows. Must have been 500 cassettes from the dead to phish to Santana, etc. Hearing this version of st. Stephen always brings back memories to the tapes and I hope I spread the love to some people and maybe turned some on to the dead. Kinda wish I still had them though lol. 🌹💀⚡🎸

@radarsmilin1179 There's a couple of free apps, Deadhead Archives for Android and Relisten for iOS that have all the shows available for streaming. Multiple versions of each show too. I used to have a duffle bag of tapes that I hauled around in my car. I'd reach in a fish out one at random. Those days are gone, but the app is a pretty sweet alternative.

They get over their "Tempo Bridge" thing with St. Stephen with Jack Straw IMO which has same structure but opposite Slow then Faster. Then they go back and Produce a Masterpiece like St~NFA~St~Morning Dew from 5.8.77. The 2 min section after NFA at Cornell is so good. Unbelievably good. Bobby's chords remind me of Playing In The Band Reprise and Jams into The Wheel. The tension at end of jam. Jerry not even playing for first 15 seconds Bobby and Phil so fricken good in this show.

Love the songs, but not the best possible recording. Lots of wow and flutter on this one. Saint Stephen, according to the man who wrote the lyrics for the song, Robert Hunter, is not about any specific Saint Stephen, just A Saint Stephen. "The Eleven" is a reference to the confusing time signature, music scholars will know, but I believe it is an 11/12 beat. Whatever that means.

Can recommend you hear Jerry Garcia’s Band, live versions of The Beatles song from the white album of Dear Prudence, lots of choices on You Tube they are all glorious 😎. Also Two From The Vault of Eleven from 1968 is vastly superior to this version imo! Oh and October 12th 1968 at the Avalon, the Jimi Hendrix jam that never happened, oh and the recording quality is just amazing for the time, especially the drums imo!

@@williamborne7992 Hi Bill, Well I suppose that it's Blues/Rock/Progressive Rock. Band wise Gary Moore, Jimi Hendrix, Colosseum, Free, Taste, Black Sabbath, Cream, Deep Purple, Wishbone Ash, Joe Bonamassa...really the list goes on and on. There was a lot of great music around in the late 60's early 70's. GD were often played at parties that I went too, where we would sit down and contemplate the world (if you know what I mean?). I know that I borrowed a couple of early GD albums back in those days, but I just couldn't get into them. Too countryish for my taste. I'm a big guitar fan. I've been playing guitar for over 50 years now and was a guitar teacher for 40 years. Also spent many years as a semi professional musician. Unfortunately, J.G's playing does not really do anything for me. Yes, some of it is quite good, but nothing that special. If you can think of any GD tracks that might make me think differently, please let me know. I'm more than willing to check them out. I have quite liked a few that reCAP has played, but not liked enough to listen to them again. Cheers and regards. Steve.
