"From the penultimate show of the Radio City Music Hall run in 1980, Truckin' was also a great song to launch the second set jam. During this period, Truckin' was generally slotted in one of two places: before the Drums/Space sequence, sending the Dead into an uninterrupted hour-long segued sequence of music, or coming out of Space. Toward the end of the 1980s, it was used almost exclusively in the former slot, but the latter placement of Truckin' always began a wonderful, uninterrupted, and long sequence of Dead magic." - David Lemieux

This is the best; to be able to see this in 2024 and think back to life in 1980, which at the time felt like a huge departure from the 70s and 60s but in retrospect, 1980 not nearly the mess that we have today.

I don't get it lol what's the problem? Gambling references? Driving references¿ Jesus lol. Maybe they don't realize Bourbon Street is a real place and they dont want the kids to think drinking is cool? Or maybe they really like downers and cocaine and don't like the fact that this song is demonizing their favorite pastimes? Because kids are NOT going to get the psychedelic references, and even if they did how is that any worse than forcing kids to say the pledge of allegiance? (Sorry I got a little off track at the end I just fucking hate the pledge of allegiance lol)

I remember the Truckin performances from this era from shows in New York/New England. I remember that Phil's bass coming out of an outro was a sonic boom that punctuated the song with all the force of his might. I had never before experienced bass frequency sound reinforcement capable of creating that experience. The live audio equipment always seemed top shelf to my ear once any mixing problems in early songs were addressed. Absolutely unique life experience that encouraged my mind to differently, with a focus on creative energy and what could be if we try this.

I remember seeing The Dead, The Band and the Allman Bros. at Watkins Glen in 1973, it was a 3 day outdoor concert, there's a great clip on KZbin, it like 9 minutes long, and shows 600,000 hippies converging on that little town, most people just hitch hiked up, no tickets either ...lol The chain link fence just got plowed down, despite that many kids, everyone I seen was cool, well all the weed and other stuff kept people pretty mellow ...lol To this very day I still meet people who went ... that's pretty amazing by itself ... oh I miss those days ! Happy Christmas All !!!

Yup, I was there, age 17, a total Dead marathon -- Three hours "sound check" the night before, 5 hours show at noon the next day, then, after The Band and the Allman Brothers Band, mind you, a jam with all of them. I remember we left around 1 AM to avoid the traffic (good call) and were thinking that if we never heard any of those three bands again, we had heard our fill. Great show.

@@charlesbarber6137 One of the things I remember most, was after the rains and everyone trying to figure out how to get back home. There were these mountains of cases of bottled water and 1 pound bags of Granola. But the crazy part was Ayer eating the Granola and drinking water, the Granola was like little sponges that exploded in my stomach. But hey it was an amazing adventure all and all.

Great version!! Man they were firing on all cylinders well into the 80s thankfully since I didn't get to my first show til '86. Now if I could only remember the date of my first show 🤯 Two or three early ones was Dead and Dylan at Giants stadium..but think that was '87. Also Jerry on Broadway- '86 or '87. And The Dead with Branford Marsalis at the Nassau coliseum and MSG! Such great times!! Jerry on Broadway was wild as I knew almost nothing about his solo band but we were first row and after that I was certainly on the bus forever! I have two amazing pics of Jerry and the band from that Broadway show that I managed to take before they threatened to take away my camera! They're pretty much my two most cherished real pictures as there were no cell phones at that time 😃🍄✌️🐢🙏

Legend has it about 50,000 were inside but only 15,000 tix were sold. That show was the reason they put a cap of 20,000 for every show afterwards. Truckin', got my chips cashed in Keep truckin', like the do-dah man Together, more or less in line Just keep truckin' on Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street Chicago, New York, Detroit and it's all on the same street Your typical city involved in a typical daydream Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings Dallas, got a soft machine Houston, too close to New Orleans New York got the ways and means But just won't let you be Most of the cats that you meet on the street speak of true love Most of the time, they're sittin' and cryin' at home One of these days they know they better be goin' Out of the door and down to the street all alone Truckin', like the do-dah man Once told me, "You've got to play your hand" Sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime If you don't lay 'em down Sometimes the light's all shinin' on me Other times, I can barely see Lately, it occurs to me What a long, strange trip it's been What in the world ever became of sweet Jane? She lost her sparkle, you know she isn't the same Livin' on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine All a friend can say is, "Ain't it a shame?" Truckin', up to Buffalo Been thinkin', you got to mellow slow It takes time, you pick a place to go And just keep truckin' on Sittin' and starin' out of the hotel window Got a tip they're gonna kick the door in again I'd like to get some sleep before I travel But if you got a warrant, I guess you're gonna come in Busted, down on Bourbon Street Set up, like a bowlin' pin Knocked down, it gets to wearin' thin They just won't let you be You're sick of hangin' around and you'd like to travel Get tired of travelin', you want to settle down I guess they can't revoke your soul for tryin' Get out of the door and light out and look all around Sometimes the light's all shinin' on me Other times, I can barely see Lately, it occurs to me What a long, strange trip it's been Truckin', I'm a goin' home Whoa, whoa, baby, back where I belong Back home, sit down and patch my bones And get back truckin' on

Posting the Radio City Shows is long overdue. Without question, the Radio City / Warfield shows are historically some of the most significant shows in GD History. Here’s why. They planned for these shows vocally, and purposefully did not over play the songs or jams. They new they had an Album and Video in the works. You could say they behaved themselves and put their best foot forward. Radio City was also one of the best sounding venues for them. The mix was perfect in house and on the recordings. After Reckoning, more songs were released in HD format. After they finished up with these shows and returned back to their original show format, the Fox show that followed was explosive with the same classy playing, but with the Jams. For many years I have wondered why GD focuses on later shows videos with Bruce and Vince, when in fact they should be putting money into remastering and releasing the entire Radio City and Warfield run in Blueray. Some comments here throw bob under the bus for forgetting words, but not in these shows. The emotional energy of the band was sincere and they were all in - just exactly perfect. The Good lovin from Radio city is off the hook with Weir already singing at the top of his lungs by the third verse.

@@Twayne7 I hopped on the tour bus in 77, and when Brent joined the band, the sound changed. He and Jerry played off of each other because Brent brought a greater dynamic range to the band sound. Go To Heaven, is evident of this sound. For those inclined, here is the second set of the fox show which is just a handful of shows after the Radio/Warfield run. The connection and crescendo's are strong: archive.org/details/gd1980-11-30.nak700-set2.wagner.miller.90497.sbeok.flac16/gd80-11-30d2t02.flac

As much as I love the Dead and this song in particular, it's those endless Garcia jams that makes it hard for me to listen to them as much as I'd like. I guess I just haven't done enough drugs. Even with this one, I'm just waiting for him to finally stop "playing with himself" at the end! That said, he is nearly virtuoso level, so I can understand a bit of why he's so self indulgent, but come 'on, man. I gotta go pee!! 🤣🤣

Just the thought that the Dead were gonna play somewhere in the Empire State must of triggered law enforcement, like kicking a bee hive. Screw ‘em. Saw it first hand April 1982 at Nassau coliseum after the show when the cops blocked off the exit with dogs and paddy wagons, then we did a 180 and drove thru the steel fence, thru the swale and out eastbound on the L.I.E. Out to Shoreham. Great show by the way.
