Wow! This is a amazing Dark Star! They took the energy of Woodstock and the 60's and bingo! You can hear it in the music. That is the key of what is missing in the music now. For all the folks playing music today. It is about the vibe!!! Not playing the right notes. Peace to everyone!

It’s definitely their best dark star. The most together with pigpen included. If you listen to the pre 70 dark stars they are all amazing, but this one is with all of the ice cream toppings and cherry. Good acid and thousands around you while you jam. Kind of hard not to make a monumental jam with those parameters

Best song at Woodstock!! I always loved this version and it is the best that the Dead played at this show. Bravo! :)

I have no idea why people are saying this was the worst performance of the dead!! This dark Star is amazing with a brand new flavor to it. They went a little off a few times for couple seconds, but imagine taking meeting Lucy and trying to play in front of over half a million people!!! Anyone would go insane, but props to the best of the best Grateful Dead, held it together pretty good.

It was rough on them! They couldn't reach the level of engagement they normally attained. Being frustrated they basically trashed there own show and set the tone.
@macymakesmagic7 ай бұрын
@@LSommer it’s sad that they would allow that to bring them down. Woodstock is the most iconic hippie concert ever. If the audience was disengaged, it was likely due to them, taking acid, being exhausted, and lacking food and proper restrooms.

@macymakesmagic the pa system was fried from the rain. From what I've read everyone was uncomfortable. Bobby was literally scared for his life. Big balls of "lighting" were visible to some. The stage was moving in the muck.

The magic really did happen at Woodstock for the Dead. Just took some technical difficulties to Wade through first. It’s as if they’re alone exploring this insane sound space, they’re just themselves, and there’s an audience of 400,000 people. Incredible. After listening to lots of Woodstock shows and coming back home to the Dead, Jerry’s guitar sound is just so distinct even for the era. His style is not like any other you hear at Woodstock, and I don’t think anyone jammed quite as intensely as them. The Airplane came close but not like the Dead.

Phil talks about Woodstock in his autobiography, he was coming down from acid during this set, and he talks about all the issues mentioned. This is the highlight of the show, they opened with St. Stephen but halfway through they went into Mama Tried, then the PA cuts out. The main reason why Woodstock was a bad performance for them was more due to equipment and sound failures. No matter how good you are, when speakers and mics blow out and people can’t hear, it throws your rhythm out of wack. Some of this stuff has been remastered over the years ti disguise the real sound.

KD Gray They claimed their performance sucked, but obviously if you just listened to this you know it didn’t. They had a lousy time, and apparently projected those feelings about it onto their false claims that they didn’t play well. They created this underdog notion that “we blew it at all the big ones.” Just not true.
