When any chorus occurred, everyone went nuts. The entire concert. I have experienced this in a few Dead shows. What seems to have happened is that we all went off into our own trip during a stanza, because we all tripped out. But when the chorus brought us all back together, we seemed to be one person again. We would all just start yelling because we were so happy to be among a large group. I still have my shirt from this concert.

I mean I guess but why not take psychedelics and enjoy the dead as well? And honestly while you are capable of enjoying the music sober , the music is by the dosed for the dosed. It really only makes sense on LSD , there music literally sounds like it's turned upside down when your dosed. You can have a much larger appreciation for the music because that's how it was intended to be heard .

It's so cool seeing Jerry playing off of Brent's energy throughout this performance. Brent is constantly making Jerry smile in musical bliss throughout every show during this period, and Jerry really does feed off of that in both his vocals and his guitar playing, as illustrated several times here. You can actually physically see the deep, innate, unspoken musical connection they had with one another. They were a great musical match.

I think it really eased the pressure on Jerry to have this young passionate cat taking more of the spotlight. I think if Brent didn't die and was with the band in 95 when Jerry died , they would have kept touring .
@STSGuitar16
@STSGuitar16 Жыл бұрын
@@cosmicslopass hell, I think if Brent hadn’t died jerry may not have died so soon after. It seemed like he was the light for Jerry during those years. It was always just a matter of time for Jerry, but his health took a drastic turn for the worse after Brent’s death. Also, after Brent, Jerry seemed much happier playing in JGB than the Dead. Some of the happiest, best performances of his career until the big H got ahold of him again. At the end of the day, Brent dying and the pressure of constantly having to keep the Grateful Dead machine moving is ultimately what killed jerry. If only Jerry could have taken a well-deserved year or two off to focus on himself.
@cosmicslopass
@cosmicslopass Жыл бұрын
@@STSGuitar16 i find it strange that the band kinda just kept going after Brent died. I'm not even a big fan of the 80s dead (69-74 is where i get my kicks) but it was clear Brent was the future of the band. The band was in a firm direction and playing with purpose because Brent kept them on their toes. It's disgusting what the grateful dead machine became, Jerry was literally dying in front of the fans and no one really seemed to care. They should have taken a long break after Brent's passing instead of just pretending his death wasn't a total blow to the band. Like your brother you've been playing with for nearly 10 years just died , take a step back and re evaluate . There's more important things at stake then keeping a party going
@STSGuitar16
@STSGuitar16 Жыл бұрын
@@cosmicslopass yeah man, i totally agree with literally everything you just said. 69-74 are also my favorite years, followed by late 70s and then ‘89 and ‘90. Don’t listen to anything after Brent just because it absolutely lacks his presence. I mean, they had to hire two keyboardists just to try to fill the massive hole Brent left, and obviously it just wasn’t anywhere near the same. They also got suuuuuper cheesy midi sound going a lot in the early 90s that I don’t care for at all. But yeah, it goes back to the fact that they had literally hundreds of people on their payroll that depended on the band for their livelihood. I imagine it would pretty damn hard to tell someone (let alone 100+ people), “sorry, this steady career you’ve had with us for 15-20 years is suddenly stopping indefinitely and you’ve got to go find a new job to support your family.” I know Jerry felt that pressure probably more than anyone, but I’ve heard several of them talking about that situation. It became a big business (still is a massive business with the Dead and Co era) and they couldn’t just put the brakes on suddenly and bring everything to a stop. Plus they all said that if the Dead quit, Jerry would just go out and tour with JGB instead, so like I said, it was always a matter of time for Jerry after Brent. Videos from 1995 are straight up sad to watch, man. Jerry was obviously in a very bad way. I just don’t think there was really anything anyone could have done to stop it from happening. They were totally stuck between a rock and a hard place. Sucks that it ended up how it did, but hey, let’s just celebrate the awesome stuff about the band. They have given us untold hours of bliss and jams and I am very thankful for that. I’m 25 and found the Dead my freshman year of college and never looked back once. I was hooked instantly (shoutout to Skull and Roses Bertha and Mama Tried for being my gateway songs into the dead lol). I found the sound of the band and Jerry’s voice to be completely entrancing like no other person or band i had ever heard. They just had such a damn good sound. Their music is totally timeless now. It feels like it was never written, it has just existed for all of time. And it is every bit as incredible now as it was when it was happening live. Best damn band out there. Sorry for writing a novel here but I just felt like writing something lol

I was there. The parking lot party afterward was #&$*ing epic. The new thing for tee shirts was that someone would spin the tie dye while someone else dropped white paint drops onto them. The result was that those people on considerable amounts of psychedelics (me?) saw the drops as light breaking through the shirts. Cherry juice at the entrance... miracle ticket signs... Marlboro signs larger than life... This concert was everything. Please crank this song and dance.

89 was an absolute stellar year for the band. It also happens to be the same year 'I got on the bus.' July 17th 1989, I had just turned 16, a couple of friends had bought me the tickets for all 3 nights for my bd present. Also was my first time trying LSD. Was the second best night of my life. The birth of my children being first.

Love that look on Jerry's face during his solo. "Wow that was neat you guys are hitting those big accents together." First one on 2, next time around on 3, then 4. Even on the 1 after that! Impressive. Wish they could have had their shit together on that every time. Brent was a monster musician.

Well I was 7 in 1987, and had gotten a walkman for x-mas (no tapes, but I was fine with that). That summer my cousin who was Honorably Discharged from the Army, had been in Europe (and apparently from 1970-1987 the Army didn't have much to do) and he had gone on the entire Europe tour and even made it to a couple Egypt shows! So he came to live with us (we had a house with a studio apartment) until he figured out his life plan. I asked if he had tapes I could use in my Walkman, and he gave me several boxes! I had no idea who they were! I began learning about music when I was about 2. My father had been in a band, and he taught me how to harmonize. I could read sheet music before I could actually read! So I started listening to these tapes! To be completely honest the only thing I asked was who is THIS guy singing, referring to Jerry! The piano was great, the rhythm guitar was good, drums were so cool, I hated Donna and didn't even know her name. I honestly would fast forward through only a few Bobby songs, but the older I got I loved it all except Donna.So, when I sat down and researched about the Acid Tests, Haight-Ashbury street, Pigpen, Kreutzmann, and when Donna joined. The history of Haight-Ashbury and all the other legends. So technically from 7-11 I was a Jerry Garcia fan only. It wasn't until I did all that research I felt I was a Dead Head! Some have said I'm not because I never saw them, but I was outside of Jerry's last show in Albany, NY I was just too young to get in. I have some amazing tapes still, and thanks to my Cousin...I'm a fan for life, and now my daughter is!

I was at this show. I remember the police were hammering on people, because everything was really out of control....80 thousand people or so...half way through the show the cops chase a dude off the floor who was naked but minding his own business. It was crazy. I was so high on LSD I forgot how money worked. That's fucking high ! The crowd was going nuts, and having an incredible time as you can see in the video. What a great experience it was.
