There is nothing the courts can do except strongly suggest the patient be put in a more secure home. The can't prosecute a man that has no idea of what he did or why he did it, it's under the classification of insanity. Good video.

Correct. We had a situation with a family member suffering from dementia had an interaction with another facility resident. The other resident's family didn't press charges either.

Thanks you two! It's unfortunate that this happened in the nursing home with these two men. My father had Lewey Bodey Dementia in the end. I lived with him and my mother to take care of him. The night wandering is very common. I slept in living room to watch the door and caught my dad twice trying to go out! This nursing home is responsible for this happening. I imagine if it did go to court it would have been not guilty by reason of insanity. When they get like this they must be watched very closely. Luckily my father was very sweet and loved to flirt with nurses. They can be mean and nasty and combative the illness goes two ways. It's hard on family either way!

Alzheimers people do tend to have a voilent moment here and there...but will forget 5 minutes later about what frustrated them. I think they just get frustrated because they know they sre changing but don't know why and they can't remember syuff etc. Its not all of them but a god bit of them. We have a couple in the family and i work with (sit with) a lady who is. We hid all the sharp knives and siscssors from her. We heard of an incident that a husband (local news) that had alzhiemer stabbed his wife with a knife because he had a moment of being upset. The wife died. They were both elderly. I don't think he got charged though because he was mentally not there.

Hey, Jordan and Katie!!! I live 15 minutes south of the MOA, and there was the old, outside Met Stadium where the MN Twins Baseball Team and MN Vikings Football played. But there was also an indoor Met Center where the old MN North Stars NHL Hockey Team played. Vern would have been at the indoor Met Center.

Jordan I have been in the field of Alzheimer’s and Dementias for over 25 years. Someone who suffers from dementia and or Alzheimer’s can’t be prosecuted for assault and battery, or God forbid the person dies, they can’t be held accountable or responsible for their actions. It’s up to the facility to determine if they are able to take care of him after he was getting aggressive. We have had many fights with two elders who are demented. Of course here in Maryland we have to report it to the state authorities who govern our facilities, we can send them out for evaluation and maybe adjust their medication. If he has been showing behavioral issues the facility and family members need to see if there’s another facility that can help better with those behaviors. It’s so sad to hear. He was my Nana’s favorite wrestler.

I saw Verne Gagne wrestle Nick Bockwinkle in Green Bay circa 1971. About a year later we landed at Tampa International while on a family vacation. While riding the people-mover at the airport, my Father said, "There's Verne Gagne." He was standing at the opposite end of the car with a large blond gentleman. I got a piece of paper and a pen and approached him, asking for his autograph. While signing for me he introduced his companion by saying, "This is Eddie Graham. He's a wrestler too." I didn't know Eddie Graham because he was not AWA. But I went to matches in Oshkosh with wrestlers like Red Bastien, Bullinski, Crusher, Ivan Koloff, Don Muraco, Wahoo McDaniel, Bobby Heenan, Larry Hennig, Blackjack Lanza, and even Andre the Giant. I remember seeing the Vachon's, Mad Dog and Butcher in a tag team battle in Green Bay.

He was also an alternate for the U.S freestyle wrestling team at the 1948 Olympic Games; he later said that he might have wrestled in the Olympics, but his coaches had discovered that he had earned money winning a wrestling match at a carnival, thus putting his amateur standing in question.

Sad story. Thank you for covering it. It's been my experience that with things like Dementia and Alzheimer's any quirks or little habits seem to be enhanced. If that makes sense. For example, if someone was kind of a collector of things they may become more of a hoarder if they get that. They sometimes will behave as if they are children. It can be so awful and defeating to deal with. It's my opinion if that story is actually true it falls squarely on the shoulders of the facility he was in. If it wasn't true the same thing, they should have been the first to get with the media and tell the truth. If they didn't know the truth... well once again it's on them.

Very cool to know you are back here in the Twin Cities. I forgot all about the Met Stadium and The Met Center where the MOA is now. I watched lots of twins games at the Met Stadium and saw many concerts like AC/DC at the Met Center which was North of the stadium. I never saw any wrestling events here but I did watch the Minnesota North Stars play a couple times. WWE moved over to the Target Center where I did see many wrestling events because I work for the company that owns the fiber out of the building. So not to brag but I was able to hang out with all the wrestlers and even eat dinner with them and the crew behind the scenes. OK fine I'm bragging a little. My all time favorite was eating dinner with the Undertaker and his wife when The BIG Show walked in wearing pink flip flops and pink shorts. I pointed at him with a co-worker and Undertaker said "you gonna say anything to Show about that?" I said nope. All of the guys are awesome to be with because I grew up watching them. I love what you do and hope you enjoy Minnesota.

I would say that the "not guolty by reason of insanity " law may apply . While we don't often think of Alzheimer people being insane, they don't have the capacity to distinguish right from wrong . The nursing home however, should have been charged for failing to keep the resident safe . Nursing homes are awful places to end up. Residents are forced to take medications that in the long run don't contribute to their health, . Many medications just cause more issues, leading to yet more problems, and more meds prescribed to correct what the other meds are causing . I have a friend whose mom has Alzheimer's . I suggested a proper keto diet ( low carbs, no sugars . After four months, she's improved greatly . The medical community needs to be schooled on proper nutrition at any age .

If he legitimately has Alzheimer's, he can't be held liable because he "wasn't in his right mind."* He CAN be charged, though. That's a different issue. But the family of the deceased can bring a civil suit against the nursing home and the aggressor (the wrestler in this case.) *Different states have different criteria, but in this case it's pretty clear that he clearly didn't appreciate the nature of his actions, or know the wrongfulness of what he did.

I wasn't into wrestling by choice. My dad was an attorney in LA back in the 50's and one of his clients was Gorgeous George. He put together the papers for a turkey ranch George was buying Thousand Oaks Calif. I was only 10 years old then and I remember the wrestlers would come over to the house for a BBQ my dad would throw for them. I remember Freddie Blassie, among some of the top of day wrestlers. Johhny "red shoes" Duggan, Jimmy Lennon (uncle to the Lennon sisters). I became a wrestling fan after that. I met Hulk Hogan before he was ever in wrestling, when he played guitar in a small band in So. Cal. Terry Bolea. Many more to remember. Those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end.

40 yr nursing home nurse here, and yeah, that sort of stuff does happen. And it depends on the state's laws as to whether someone with dementia can be charged or not. Most states won't prosecute it though, because then they have to provide a facility that can give the patient the care they need. Most prisons discharge demented or when the prisoner gets so disabled from their chronic illness/age, to whichever nursing home the state contracts with. A facility I worked with here in Albuq., we had the state contract. We had a guy who had been jailed for a very brutal murder. And the guy was okay, but there was one thing we could not do and that was call him by his real name. Only a select few knew his real name, most of the staff did not. I could write a book detailing this sort of behavior and no, they can't help it most of the time. The thing with dementia, some people get what we call "pleasantly confused"..........but some get really aggressive. Staff does get hurt, same with therapists. I had a dementia resident in an mobility scooter run my foot over and it cracked an ankle bone... I was limping around work in an open slipper until it healed. She didn't mean to do it. Her family felt real bad about it.

I'm sure other non-lawyers have chimed in on what happened or didn't happen, I'll share a few thoughts as somebody who works for the local newspaper that covered the death investigation. For some reason I always assumed the incident happened in a different Bloomington nursing home. It happened a year or two before I started covering Bloomington, which I have more more than a decade. My predecessor covered the story, and we talked about it back in the day. I wish I could ask him to recount the details today, but he died several years ago. I can't say what did or didn't happen between Vern and his victim any more than Larry Zbyszko can. Neither of us were there. If Zbyszko tried to claim the media was pinning it on Vern, and that Vern's had nothing to do with it, then Zbyszko has zero credibility when it comes to anything he says. His claims on anything carry no weight with me. The media gets its primary info in a case like that from the investigating agency, which was the Bloomington PD. The media doesn't do its own investigation, generally, unless you're Dateline NBC. In a death investigation, you get your info from the PD, which has to pick and choose details it will release in an open investigation. In some cases, there may be a witness who speaks to the media, but I'd wager any witness inside the nursing home is either a resident, who the media won't get access to in most instances, or an employee, whose employer instructs not to speak to the media and to say little more than necessary. If the nursing home was negligent in some way, the last thing an employee or the employer wants is scrutiny and a lawsuit. All that said, the media isn't looking for witnesses who may or may not be credible in an effort to construct a narrative that "sells papers," or anything else. Sorry, conspiracy theories, it's just not how it works. I don't care if Fox News perpetuated a conspiracy theory and paid in excess of $800M to settle it, those of us at the local level are not making it up as we go along. Zbyszko is just trying to take the shine off of old Vern. I'm sure other non-lawyers have chimed in on what happened or didn't happen, I'll share a few thoughts as somebody who works for the local newspaper that would have covered the death investigation. I don't care if Fox News perpetuated a conspiracy theory and paid in excess of $800M to settle it, those of us at the local level are not making it up as we go along. Zbyszko is just trying to take the shine off of old Vern. I highly doubt there was ever much likelihood Vern would be charged with murder. If his dementia was well documented, and significant, it's pretty likely that no charges are filed against anyone in that situation. The PD doesn't decide if he is charged, the county attorney does. The courts don't get involved unless there are charges. The county attorney's office files charges, and does so only if it things it has a case with evidence to support a conviction. They're not going to start a legal proceeding on a whim, or for a show. Any speculation that there was serious consideration of charging Vern with murder is nothing more than speculation, and probably from someone with about as much credibility as Zbyszko. So none. I didn't follow the story closely, or care about the details. It wasn't mine to report. But yeah, safe bet he didn't remain at Friendship Village. No way they let him stay there after such an incident. Every resident is going to fear for his/her life. I've been inside Friendship Village. It has different levels of service, and maybe a higher level unit with regular medical care, but that place is luxury senior living. It's got an indoor pool and a golf simulator. That place ain't cheap, and it ain't a nursing home so much as it's a Taj Mahal for seniors. Vern needed more care and attention than that place offered, I suspect. I'm not an AWA historian, but I remember it as a kid in the '80s. Minnesota had a lot of claims to fame from Hulk Hogan onward thanks to all the talent Vern produced in his territory. So many people have a story about old AWA wrestlers from way back when, because they were local celebs, not national celebs touring the entire country, and more. One of my colleagues, a sports writer for 50 years and still going, wrote a pro wrestling column for our publications back in the 80s for a few years. He knew a lot of the AWA wrestlers and got to know a few of them pretty well. He even had dinner with Andre the Giant once. He told some of his stories last year on my podcast. Last fall Bloomington was the site of an infrequent AWA reunion. I didn't attend, but a few hundred fans did. It drew a bunch of old timers...nobody super famous, that I'm aware of. But there's still plenty of reminiscing happening all these years later. Not bad for a wrestling promotion that has been out of business for 30 years. One of the old wrestlers who attended lived in Bloomington pretty much his whole life. Kenny "The Sodbuster" Jay got his nickname because his main income in his wrestling days was lawn/landscape type work. Sodbuster was a jobber, but he did participate in one of those gimmicky boxer vs. wrestler matches way back in the day. KZbin tells me it was in 1976, I believe in Chicago. And Sodbuster fought Muhammed Ali. Really! It's not a long match, and you can find decent video of it on KZbin. Sodbuster never was a champion, but he's well remembered by AWA fans. He never left Bloomington and died on Groundhog Day at age 85. I know you were just passing through, and like most major cities, there are many cool things to see and do, some of which you can find on tourist guides, some less so. You would love meeting a quirky pseudo-celebrity in Bloomington. The guy's stories are legit (mostly) and his house is wild. There's a simple, historic old bridge in Bloomington with an interesting history, and a great slice of nature (and a legit farm) very close to Mall of America. There's a pretty nifty little museum that's not easy to find, tied to aviation, although that might be more Carpetbagger's thing. Stick around a little longer next time you pass through Minnesota.

Back in Verne's day, wrestling wasn't for actors, they do much damage to their bodies now but, back then it wasn't performance, if you got beat, you got beat. Sounds like him and Vince had much in common with their business deals. That's happened in nursing homes, one patient killing another and both being so sick they weren't aware of what was going on, nothing can be done with someone that sick, perpetrates have to leave that particular place or hirer private care.

I had read all this about Verne a few years ago. Sad ending for sure. Two Greg Gagne's in Minnesota same time period. The wrestler and the Twins SS. Of course Twins SS spelled Gagne the same as the wrestler. But he pronounced his Gag Nee

What doesn’t make sense to me from Larry’s side of the story is he said Mary was helping Vern with his episodes with Alzheimer’s, but Mary died in 2002 (according to the tombstone). Does that mean that Verne had Alzheimer’s for almost 15 years?

😢 My grandmother was a big wrestling fan. Every Saturday no one could get near the TV she had to watch vern Gagne her Favorite wrestler. I didn't know that much about wrestling so every time I'd watch I'd learn more and more I wasn't that into it so I knew about him and that was it I really didn't know anymbye, But it's very sad to know that something like that happened or somebody like that. It's nice to know that you are up in our neck of the woods this time We live just across the border from Minnesota in Wisconsin and of course we did watch the wrestling matches from Minnesota TV stations in Saint Paul and Minneapolis.

Verne Gagne was my favorite wrestler! Shocked to hear about his treatment of other people. I remember seeing the story on that incident in the nursing home. So shocking and sad..thanks for this story, Jordan!

Jordon, just an observation on vlogging technique .. May I suggest you use the opposite hand to hold the camera so you are facing your quest joining you. As it is now the your quest is left out of the loop and your missing their reaction to what you are saying. It also would allow you to interact more with them. Just a thouhgt Thanks always in enjoy your work.

Alzheimer's is a terrible affliction, I hope one day science will find a cure. But if there's ever a Mt. Rushmore of wrestling promoters constructed, Verne Gagne should be included. An absolute legend with an eye for talent, and the ability to train and guide them to their utmost potential!

Where was the staff that was responsible for the residents. Why were the two men left along long enough for that situation to happen? That was who was responsible for that man’s death.
