We challenged our friends over at GMBN to find out what the ultimate all-road bike is, a gravel bike or a mountain bike? But we weren't going to solve this question anywhere, so we went to the ultimate testing ground, Iceland!
In association with Moots, Reynolds, Cycliq, and Komoot.

Simon was joined by Neil for his icelandic adventure, GMBN vs GCN, gravel vs MTB, Drop bars and pretty skinny tyres vs suspension forks and flat bars. Just who would have the best tool for the job?
Over two days, and 200 kilometres Si and Neil traversed the Icelandic Highlands by bike. The guys aimed for the Icelandic summertime, but it turns out summer means something different over there, as the temperature hovered around 0 degrees Celsius in the daytime!
This was an absolutely incredible adventure over some of the most stunning terrain you can ride a bike on, and we'd love to know what you think of it. So leave us a comment down below this video!

Folks have done tours of Iceland for decades in 26ers with 2 inch tyres and road bikes with basic cross tyres. Nice bikes but almost an overkill on both parts. A 2x crankset surely on th3 mtb or at least a 36t 1x with 11-45. Neill looked like his chainwheel was tiny.

I own a gravel, road, and MTB. It think the best combination for that type of riding is a gravel bike frame with flat bars. Having a gravel bike with road bike handle bars sucks because it limits your view and its hard to control when going down hill on loose dirt/gravel.

Should have switched bikes on the second day. I have a 15yo Moots Rigormootis. It's a 26", can't take wider than 2.1" tires, & I just upgraded it to 1x10, but it's still one of my favorite bikes. I'll never get rid of it. Wish I could afford both those bikes (and a trip to ride them in Iceland), but that will have to stay on my bucket list for a while longer.

@blinzi69
@blinzi69 2 жыл бұрын
it actually is much much more comfy to ride rough terrain with a mtb, while the new race hardtail bikes are also not that much slower on smooth roads too - overall if you wanna go for an offroad spin and have fun, better choose a mtb. if you are an explorer and just wanna ride around without thinking about going offroad here and there, the gravel bike might be your choice. as soon as it gets a little bit more hilly with rough gravel, mud, twigs and roots the MTB is the clear winner. i think the overall better choice still is the MTB. gravel was invented to trick the hardcore road bike community into riding offroad - thats why most old fashioned MTB riders cant dig the hype, like me for example.
@Broodjemetbeleg
@Broodjemetbeleg 9 ай бұрын
@EnigmaSixx not true, a gravel bike is just marginally slower than a road bike. Unless you're a pro rider you absolutely won't notice the difference. Especially when you put on some 35mm tires. Pro Road riders these days prefer wider tires anyway I believe some even have 30-32mm these days.

because it is :-) gravel is not meant to be comfy offroad imho - it just opens up the possibility to ride a gravel road if needed. you are not meant to purposely take a gravel bike to an offroad ride imho - you can but the experience is rather mediocre compared to a mtb.

@@blinzi69 the whole point of gravel bikes are to take them offroad dude what?? Maybe not downhill mtb trails or something like that, but they're made for offroad
@vetzaaak
@vetzaaak 2 жыл бұрын
@@YangusCool He's not wrong when he says gravel bikes aren't meant to be "comfy" offroad. They're faster as long as the terrain isn't too challenging, but they're not nearly as fun or versatile as mtb's for someone who's npt in a hurry and might also want to do some trails now and than and can't/won't collect a bunch of different bikes. A road bike isn't comfy/grippy enough on gravel roads, a mtb is a bit slower...so that's where the marketeers got the idea of squeezing in this "inbetween" option that ended up being little more than a slightly tweaked xc bike.

16:26 Ah yes, the crystal clear pure mountain stream water. Delicious, refreshing, amazing... until you take a drink, then go 30 yards upstream around the corner and find a dead sheep gently rotting away in it! 🐑💀😳🤢 (This happened to me a few years ago😂🤣)

Even better than TopGear / Grand Tour though: amazing cinematography and content combined with an activity which can actually be repeated by Jane or Joe Everycyclist with their own bike which will be just as or even more epic, not just the images and the story of rushing up or down some Alpine scenic route in super expensive super cars (driven by old men).

It's not that riders are increasingly looking beyond the road. It's that 99.9% of Earth's dry land is unpaved, but road bikes are increasingly built to ONLY work well on that 0.1% that _is_ paved, and riders are getting sick of it. "Gravel bikes" is just the latest marketing term for "all-purpose bikes that work acceptably well in most conditions and most people would enjoy riding one." Which is to say, the concept of "gravel bikes" only exists because "road bikes" have been replaced by racing bikes that only wattage-obsessed nancy boys with waxed legs can enjoy.

No joke, I have a gravel bike with a set of wider/tougher wheels for dirt and narrower/aero wheels for roads. The weight difference is about 1.5 kg between the gravel bike and my old road bike, but to my mind the difference is completely insignificant compared to the versatility and durability of the gravel frame. Road bikes are increasingly made for shaving seconds off of road race times on theoretical perfect roads.

If you would like to try maybe even more varied terrain, you should try the Norwegian “Rallarvegen”. I would recommend both directions, making it a two day trip with an overnight stay in beautiful Flåm, and when returning cover some of the initial climb by the beautiful train ride of Flåmsbanen. If you do it early in the summer, you may Even have to navigate snow.
