Gravel Price in 2023. Did I get a Good Deal or Get Ripped Off?

I feel that a reputable company would mention spread or not spread. And if they knew your intent was to have them spread it, the price they quoted per load should have included spreading. Emailing a quote is always best. I have been caught off guard like this a few times too. Live and learn

Prices vary based on location and the type of material. I'm not talking about that. They changed their charging algorithm and didn't tell you. That's on them. It's 100% not up to you to ask IMO.

A tremendous amount of variables go into pricing a job like yours so its hard to say if you got ripped off or not. One thing I can say as an owner of an excavating company is that there is a lot of overhead and cost that customers sometimes fail to realize. Equipment and Trucks cost a great deal of money to own and maintain. I own 2 trucks and it cost about $ 12,000.00 a year just in insurance and licensing. It also costs me about $90.00 an hour for fuel and driver and that doesn't even include average yearly maintenance cost or the cost of ownership. A tri axle dump truck these days sells for about $300,000.00

I understand all that. The problem is, they never mentioned an additional fee. Didn't come up at all. They didn't charge that fee the last time I had them spread gravel. My fault for not asking. Lesson learned.

@Nichols County your point is well taken and I personally agree and believe that they are at fault for not communicating effectively about the additional cost for grading. I know that when I do pricing for a customer I always provide them with an estimate in hand either in pdf format or a mailed out paper copy that has a breakdown of all charges including trucking, grading and material costs. I don't necessarily think you were ripped off but I do understand the bad taste left from expecting a certain cost and ending up with something different all of which could have been avoided on their part with thorough communication. And it really should be their job as the contractor to communicate effectively.

That’s nothing. I just paid 750 per load “20 tons a load” of crusher run. I spread it with my own track loader. 800 to spread all That is very small money. It takes me 1.5 hours per 20 ton to perfectly level crusher run. So I think what you paid is in line or even cheap, not sure what that material is that you got but it looks nice. I mean a tri axel dump struck cost 300k now and a track loader is 70-100k so that being said,,it’s not like you can spread it or pick it up your self. Diesel is $4 a gallon at truck stops, it’s not like you can fill up at a royal Farms like when you have a ford f-250. Stop crying and pay the man is what I’m saying. But yeah I would have told you up front how much it was to begin with.

They call it camden chert gravel here. I'm not crying. I'm pointing out that they didn't tell me when they did a site walk and quote. I would have used my neighbors track loader to spread it myself if I knew there was going to be an additional $800 charge.

That's over priced for the gravel. I pay $35-$70 per truck load, clay gravel aloe atone.

What are your prices right now? Every place I was going to use about a year back is asking 300-400 a ton which was like 5 tons last time I had checked

Nahhh son, who is going to haul it and spread it. Can you borrow a cdl a dump truck and a track loader? No you can’t, so you have to pay. What wrong with you cheap people?
