Glad you both survived the walk! Gravesend seems as ominous as its name. Next time you find yourself in Kent you should visit Pluckley. It's the most haunted village in England... though I lived there 4 years and the spookiest thing I ever witnessed was an albino phesant....
@cdwc Жыл бұрын
Yes, I definitely want to do that. There is a Pluckley Circular Walk in one of my books.

Ooh I love a haunting even though I can't yet make myself believe in it. I'd honestly be thrilled to see an albino pheasant though - we've got tons of pheasants round here and not one of them has bothered to be albino!

Im glad this was your favourite walk to date. The 3 daws was also a smugglers pub and has tunnels to 5 other pubs in the town. They were also used for when the press gangs were knocking about. Everyone would pile in and end up in another pub. Also to the left was rosherville gardens. Which was the brighton of its day and londoners would spend the day coming down by steam boat

I worked in the comic book industry for a long time and I tended to recommend what many would call 'sleepers'. I always recommended these: Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughn - About a group of lions during the fall of Baghdad Justice League: A League of One by Christopher Moeller - Wonder Woman fights a dragon. incredible art, clever writing, always enjoyed even by those who weren't really in to super heroes 30 Days of Night: Red Snow by Ben Templesmith - A spooky recommendation of vampires on the Eastern front with rather unique art that really gives the book atmosphere

I'm glad you are both manly men who travelled together in daylight. Watching the route made me think of those ancient highways along which rich people would go with an entourage of weapons-trained servants due to the high likelihood of attack, and anyone else who wasn't a cutthroat/robber would avoid outside daylight hours. As a modern woman without high-grade weapons training or coachmen/bodyguards I'm not sure the route is for me, BUT if anyone I know needs to dispose of a body in the South East I would recommend it highly! Also, I enjoyed the information about Pocahontas/Amonute/Matoaka/Rebecca Rolfe/etc. I like hearing about local folk on your trips, especially (Obviously I know this is highly dependent on the information available to you which may not be brilliant) of renowned ladies/less typically celebrated people. While watching this walk made me think mostly about how at risk I am walking on lonely paths, it did make me look up Pocahontas so every cloud!

Some of the places I have walked over the years have been a bit dodgy. It is more difficult for solo women I think because of the weird blokes that are around, it is depressing to always have that fear overshadowing every walk. I think a 'cool dudettes' walking club would be good.

How exciting! You're getting closer! If I'd known you were there I could have tagged along for the first part of this vid & added the history of my family to the excitement of Gravo. I discovered fairly recently that my family owned the brewery & pubs that used to be alongside The Three Daws back in the day. One of them was the Mayor Of Gravesend back in the 18th Century, stopping a pistols at dawn incident in the town Lots more interesting stuff too....but you will never know now!!! Ha! Scary path isn't it further along!! I usually take a deep breath and......RUN.....x J x

Walking down that stretch of the Thames is one of my favourite strolls, the few occasions I've made it all the way to Shornemead Fort (8:30 the fort that the youth had taken over in this video) its been empty and is quite fun to look around. I wouldn't start in Gravesend though, avoid that place! You can start by the medway canal / ship & lobster pub instead. I do want to walk further up to Cliff Fort and back, one day.
