Not just fisheries but WTO has gone mad and asking countries to reduce the subsidy that a govt gives to its countrys farmers. India is taking stand not only for our fishermen and farmers but for those countries whose economy is supported by fisheries and agriculture. Fish finders, sonar etc etc.. i guess you know if you are a fisherman.. but in India they still use old traditional ways for finding fish & the boats are also small.. so volume of catching the fish in India is way way way less than west fisherman catches .. so yes we do support ourselves in any platform.. not like west.. " west problems are world problems, but world's problems are not west problems "

An example for illegal fishing is a Chinese trawler that goes into neighbouring waters to illegally fish. Or a company who has licences for 4 boats only from issuing country but sends out more than its allowed. Those caught doing so should then no longer be able to receive subsidies or monetary support from their governments to fish. They can obviously still go out to fish on their own. It is NOT a we should all stop fishing agreement.

India is not obstructive but the developed countries together with the WTO are obstructive and working against the interests of poor farmers of the developing countries. India is simply asking to level the subsidies that these developed countries are giving to their farmers to be the same to the developing countries. Same thing with the fishermen. While China is fishing and stealing in many countries fishing grounds throughout the world, the inefficient WTO is trying to punish the poor fishermen of developing countries to reward the developed countries. This has to stop and this is what India is fighting against to be fair, not obstructing.

India must push for the growth of it's fisheries sector as it has a vast potential for export oriented revenues. India also has a vast EEZ and these fishermen must be encouraged into deep sea fishings beyond the shores. Bigger & well equipped trawlers, setting-up of cold storage facilities in A&N island chains, larger trawlers with cold storage facilities can pave the way for this.

Other than trawlers, small boats should given subsidies. Fishing in internation water should be ban. It can be increase from 200 kms to 300 kms.

Because small fishing boats cannot have any guarantee that they will surely get a catch for every trip they make. They cannot fish for periods when it's breeding season, they cannot go for fishing during monsoon (there is two monsoon season extending two months each in India), they can't go fishing when there is a cyclone or a low pressure.

If Indians go beyond their waters into Siri Lanka it means they don't have enough fish stocks in their waters, hence, the need to put in some measures. In Zambia we do have fish ban for 3 months every year which keeps our fish stocks sustainable.
