My sister worked hard ,topped her boards and got into the best govt college to do MBBS. We are general merit students. She came Rank 5 in MD entrance exams (now it's called NEET ) despite this she couldn't secure the speciality of her choice because of the quota system .I understand the quota system but in medical specialy that is about saving lives ,you need to treat everyone as equal after passing MBBS. She was so furious that that despite studying so hard someone who was half as efficient walked away with the seat .We didn't have enough money to get her a private college seat .She studied hard cracked USMLE. She got into the best US hospitals and today is leading oncologist at California 's top hospital . I'm following her footsteps now . We didn't choose this for ourselves, we are forced to flee . If you wonder why the best doctors are sitting in USA and UK, this s the reason.Medical Toppers without rich parents and without quota for my super speciality have no future in India. We are values everywhere else. It hurts to stay away from our family but we have NO CHOICE !

Everyone is talking about the 5 smart students from a graduating class that leave India, but no one is talking about the 50 smart students from that same batch who are still in India, but are unable to reach similar levels of "success". I am sure guys like Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella had classmates with even more potential than them, but who never left India and are now working in a 12-hr desk job where the toxic Indian work culture is stifling their creativity and intelligence. We need to improve our home first and provide better opportunities to the smart folks still here instead of crying about those who have decided to leave.

@deepGamingAI agree that, back in india we had unstabilised system bcos of those 1k years of continuous invasions. So now, for almost everyone in india or other looted nations, earning is success. But, we all need to think - we have enough food grains in godowns, almost 95% get food, now what it means is we came out of that hunger, also moat people can get clothes, agree shelter still problem for many, so now atleast we can say we got better, n i think some more time, we can rebuild our NATURE INCLUSIVE socio & political & Economical SYSTEM - and not like DEBT RIDDEN/HIGH ENERGY CONSUMERS / INSENSITIVE TO NATURE COUNTRIES 🙏

I remember. Few decades back I was student of engineering in India. I was within top15% merit list . At the same time , another guy with 45% score was able to get admission in to same course as me. Why ? He happened to be born in specific caste. Job was reserved for him so when he eventually cleared BE after 6-7 years, he had government job. While other graduates, better than him, were still looking for job. I left India with 4 years of research experience and now working at organization that has engineering design center in India. Not everyone get lucky like me. If India wants to retain brains, 1) abolish reservations in education and jobs 2) reward merit 3) keep politics away from education 4) have national spirit among people of different states 5) encourage risk taking

How many times can I give a thumbs up for this comment? Finally.... I would like to add one thing, retain reservations for merit students who are from economically weaker sections, and Upgrade educational institutions and make them public not private. Padhega India tabhi badhega.

What is the reason for reservation ? 1. It is important for the specific caste to represent themselves in a society . 2. Specific caste might get the job but never get the equality in the social platform. 3. Specific caste should get reformed law by which they can come in upper cast and they must be accepted by society as well .. I bet you numbers are in millions. 4. Deep inside most of the people have discrimination elements ,it's a fact. 5. Lack of education was the only reason why they were kept doing small work(sweeper, Blacksmith, cleaner, cobbler, peasants etc) they have been exploited for a long time now they need education . 5. Fact : 100% of sweeper, cleaner and other dirty works come from specific cast ,you can check this fact by taking a small survey anytime anywhere in India . 6. Poverty is problem of government but discrimination is problem of society. 7. Specific caste have been a deprived group from education .. it's not a lottery ticket for getting job. 8. India is a very big country in which not only uppercast or privileged caste live .. but also others are there who have been exploited by upper cast who broke their backbone by keeping them to only small dirty works .. education was way too far from them . 9. Reservation is a secondary problem primary problem is discrimination. 10. Without reservation people may not be able to represent themselves in society and then like old time they will be limited to small work because you know everyone favour their community only and by this discrimination will increase. 11. No body is getting rich infact they just reach middle class or upper middle class. 12. Go and check work reports of specific caste employees in any sector they will be at their best with efficient contribution in their department and you will be surprised to see the data of corrupt employees taking bribe is rare most comes from upper caste . Brother you should see the big picture .. I also want that country should develop but development should be for each and every group or community. These decisions are guarded by supreme court and they know what will happen if they will take back reservation. Maybe you don't discriminate but that doesn't means everyone is like you .. discrimination is curse for the country and reservation is just it's effect .

There are questions for you,if you will help me to know . 1. Why most of the specific caste are afraid of getting their caste revealed in public .. why don't they show off like thakur, gujjar,Brahmin .. where is their confidence ? 2. Still there are places if you want to rent a room or house then you must be a upper cast .. why is it so ? 3. In a society you are treated a little different than people belonging to your own community .. why ? 4. No body talks about discrimination but everyone is standing against reservation .. pehle discrimination Aya ya reservation ? 5. How many inter caste marriage happens in this modern scenario .. why youth also goes for their caste for getting married if there is no discrimination ? 6. There are places where people avoid having water or food in a specific caste house .. and they say that we will get "asudh" or polluted if they do so .. if they accidentally get touched by a specific caste they will immediately wash hands or will take bath .. is it right ? 7. Reservation is provided for social upliftment .. so why it is seen as economic empowerment ? 8. 22.8 % of upper caste have 41 % of money of India and 16.6 % of specific caste only have 7-8% money of India .. what's does this indicate ? 9. 50% of population of upper caste belong to rich class .. 10 % of population of specific caste belong to rich class .. how come it's only 10 % if they get jobs and admissions so easily ? 10. Why still there are incidents of inhuman behaviour with specific caste all around the India in today's world ?

@@rubudollo6524 If so called Upper class had that much money and power with unity, either it would have been migrated totally or it would have been ruling the country. Equiality does not mean tending towards other extremity it literally mean treating people equally irrespective of there caste, creed or religion, and not privileging a set of people at the cost of capacity of capable. The capable is just a proved capable without any label of categories. And by the way there is a famous saw " There is no free lunch." It fits in the law of karma too. So many years after reservation started it should be have been made void either by understanding it is not really fruitfull or by concluding that it was successful attempt.

As an American Prof of IT in the 90s and early 2000s, at least half of my graduate students were from India - highly motivated, determined to succeed. None of them wanted to remain in the US. They wanted to go back to India. After the year of practicum offered to them after they graduated, less than 10% did. When questioned, they listed what you have brought up. They talked about returning to India in the future once they had earned enough money, but none ever did.

That money earned will never be enough to return. Because India would have gotten equally expensive for their lifestyle. Also they would have their family kids in US and since they came abroad for education they would think that their kids will come too right. So the cycle continues and hence they might have continued.

Greetings from Everett Washington USA. Interesting topic, living here in the Seattle metro area. I've worked with many Indian Engineers, IT professionals, and Doctors etc. Indians are hard working people and they love India. I've asked them why they decided to move to the USA instead of staying in India. The responses I've received is that their skills are more valued in the United States, hence they get job offers with more money. Since they have desirable skills, they can find better opportunities here in the USA. Some have said that the quality of life is better for them here. Many Indian professionals have better access to other professionals who are educated and can network better something that I've heard said many times, that in India it's hard in some regions of the country for professionals to interact or not enough professionals to network etc.

It's not the Students/Employees who want to leave India. It's the country that forces us to go out. I left India back in 2019 and shifted to USA. I already refused many opportunities back in 2015, 2018 just because I want to be the part of the Indian economy. In 2018, my daughter who was 7 year old was eve teased by the colonies uncles in Delhi where I used to live. She was visiting nearby shop to buy Chips and Bread. Can you imagine? 7 year old girl eve teased by some bloody 40-50 year old uncles. Such a shame. I confronted them but they were so many and I was all alone. They complained to my Landlord and he gave us eviction notice after saying that "beti ko shaam ko bahar bhejte hi kyu ho, Yeh toh hoga hi" I complaint to Police. They came and they were drinking Chai with those uncles. Even I was taken to the police station because those uncle filed a false complaint against me that I eve teased their daughters. That i am mischievous and roam in balcony naked. I immediately left the place and shifted to some other society. Policeman took bribe of 15000 to dismiss my case. He also said to me "Ki ladte rehna case. Wife and beti ka bahar nikalna band karwa dunga". I am 39 year old grown man and not some 17 year old teenager who take decision without thinking twice. Me and my wife decided to leave India and I took that foreign opportunity and never regretted.

Very well articulated and presented. This is Narendra Shukla from Sydney, Australia. I love India, and after working in India for close to a decade, it wasn’t an easy decision to make a move to Australia. For me, a few of the reasons as listed below, were major factors. -Equal opportunity -Feel valued and respected -Growth opportunities are not driven by who you know but what you can do and what you know - your real world capabilities. -Red tape: Employers in India still demand 10th 12th mark sheets- even if you have 15+ years of experience. Not sure what they achieve by doing so. I personally find this practice quite rudimentary, boring and annoying. -I’ve seen discriminatory job adverts. Such as candidates from IITs or IIMs only. Though, I’m not from any of these, I’ve led teams consisting of IITians. Developed countries offer opportunities based on merit/actual capabilities not based on where you come from. -No reservation. At least my kids can have an environment free of cast based reservation. I’m sure if not all, most of the immigrants consider at least some of these points before making a move.🙏

I had been hearing about brain drain from India for the last fifty years. The media was complaining about it when unemployed College graduates of India were seeking to migrate to a country where they can get a job. The migration resulted in a stable and strong Indian community in US and Europe and they sent money back to India several times more than what the Govt. might have spent for their education in subsidies.

As per an iit professor, less than 5 percent from his college goes out of the country every year, but the impact they are able to create in a merit based society is much greater. We completely ignore the 95% who stay back and go into oblivion in the country because they are stuck in traffic everyday, fighting potholes or dont have energy left to contribute after paying 30-40% taxes in their bracket with no future security or benefits for healthcare and children education. Do we even notice the talent which is already there in the country, in your own office? We are still talking about having more reservations in private sector and in promotions in govt jobs in Supreme court dealings regardless of how it impacts the economy and the country. Why do we expect the talent to work hard for us, when in every election we see shameless freebies given in the form of loan waivers, free electricity and what not? Truth is we are a socialist society with a crab mentality and we do not like anyone who is more successful than us,whether it is an nri or Tata, Adani or an Ambani.

Good point, I wanted this video to deal deeper into the issue but ended up sounding alarm only, "loss of opportunities" the sweeping term to put the entire problem into doesn't disuss why there are lesser opportunities, I still don't regard india a developing country yet when 50 percent of workforce is employed in agriculture and most of the service sector is full of call centers like work, there is no place for a skilled person in an underdeveloped country.

In June 2019 I got a job with 30k@month, and after the first two months, I was asked to work for 10k@month. I left the job and asked for a Bank loan to start a small business. My 15-20 other NRI friends in India helped me with the capital after many banks refused. Growing up in India, I remember carrying a 50 rupee note every time I drove my bike because the local policeman always asked for a bribe even when I had a valid license and registration. I returned to India after living in the US for 10 years. Within 5 min after landing, a customs officer openly asked me for a bribe and harassed me until I gave up. Just last month, while my spouse was in the check in counter at the airport, the airline told us that all Indian visas were canceled and we need to reapply even though our visa was supposed to be active for 10 years. I gave up my Indian citizenship a few years ago and it was a bittersweet moment. I do want to contribute but I can't because India doesn't even allow for dual citizenship and screws me over every chance it gets. I'm not even allowed to apply for an OCI due to my job with the federal government. I hope and wish for a bright future for India but things have to change. Corruption is like cancer. Palki, your podcast on brain drain struck a chord with me. The Fiji Islands in the South Pacific had almost equal population of Indians and Indigenous people. After the military coup, staged primarily against Indians, 26,000 Indians of mainly the professional ilk left Fiji in the first year and the biggest beneficiaries were New Zealand, Australia, US and Canada. For a tiny island nation like Fiji, the loss of human capital was devastating to the economy, and took 30 years to recover. I was one of those , with 17 years of education including a University degree and 13 years of work experience , left Fiji reluctantly, and ended up with a better and well paying series of jobs in NZ. But the point is that if conditions at home are not safe or fair or promising then migration becomes an option.

I searched for a job in Gujarat, but I could not find a respectful job for a long time, eventually, I found a job 100 miles away from my home, but during my interview, a general manager offer me a job with only a salary of Rs. 60 per month. I refused that job because the living cost was Rs. 300 a month in the area. After a couple of months a got job in Western Railway of India, Lower Parel Factory in Bombay (Mumbai) for Rs. 300. With the hope, that I will advance there, I decided to survive for a few months in the Bombay economy by supplementing the cost of leaving with my own family money. But, in the very first week, a production manager who was not an engineering college graduate told all new recruits that he did not need us because he was running that factory since the British Raj and not needed any innovation or changes. He told new recruits that we get lost in the factory wherever we like to kill time our time and peacefully collect our salaries. Then and then I felt, that I need not struggle and I planned to go abroad to the USA for higher education. In the 1070s, I got M.E. in Mechanical and followed by MS in Computer Science. I am now U citizen and living in the USA as a retired engineer. I agree with you that Indian businesses and Government have to change a lot to retain India’s brain.

At the same time some SC/ST/OBC person who scored 60 to 70 % will get admission in the same or better college without even paying the full fees just because they belong to a particular tribe/caste or they are minority. This is applicable everywhere in our country, in schools and colleges where general public has to pay extra fees + donations to get a seat which their child deserves rightfully. In government sectors, business, hospitals etc. And how can we forget NEPOTISM. People here do not respect the skills and talent. They care about money.

@@salups8284 bhai we genral candidates have no problem with the reservation for the EWS and the PWD but the problem starts when the SC/ST/OBC take up more than 50% seats out out of which 10-20% didnt have any problems with discrimination nor financial. Our simple point is why should we suffer for a thing which we didn't do. There are so many rich students who get seats easily just bcz they belong to some caste and then later on get monetary benefits too. U are just seeing ur situation. No one denies the fact that reservation should be financial based as the SCs who are poor will suffer discrimination and other hardships but what about the ones who are rich they dont live in places where they are discriminated they go to urban places where these things are almost dead. They study in the same coachings as the general candidates then how can u say they have any talent and calibre to share the same hostel room as the general who is paying much higher fees has lesser annual income work much much more harder than the other guy. @@lunafringe10 Hey, JuJu! A master's degree is a post-bachelors degree. In some cases, there are 4 phases of degrees for Arts & Sciences fields in the USA. First, an Associate's degree is what most students attain in community college, which takes 2-3 years. Second, and most common, is Bachelor's degree which takes 4-6 years. Third, a Master's degree takes 2-3 years. Finally, the Doctorate degree, Ph.D. takes 5-7 years. Sadly, education is a BIG BUSINESS in the USA! There are multiple factors for "brain drain", 1st: Money (Salaries - India has very low per capita income) 2nd: Stability - job security & congenial work environment, 3rd: Political stability, 4th: General law & order, 5th: Environment & decent standard of living. 6th: Merit based recruitment, NOT reservations or cast allotment or quotas.. India has a long long way to go before people are given equal opportunity, not quota _(quotas are basically political appeasements for vote banks)_ based education or jobs etc...

One thing I have noticed with all human beings is that, if they are discriminated by "others", they tend to react in a positive way, by trying harder than the "well off", in order to achieve whatever they are capable of, and when moving to other countries, (often with only a small suitcase), dedicate all their energies available, in order to succeed and make their dreams come true. The children of wealthy people rarely understand the value of "earning" what you get, and this is what is happening in rich countries, which start going downhill. I don't know why my earlier comment on brain drain as elaborated by Ms. Palki Sharma is not showing up. I recall that during my engineering college days a brilliant engineer from Canada took up Professorship. He was a great teacher and told me during my final year that if your brain is not drained it will be in the drain and asked me to migrate to gain recognition and due rewards. Like me, many in India did not heed such advice. Many did, some of them far less talented but almost all shone like shooting stars. They were obviously wiser and not foolish like so many nationalists like us who strongly believed of a great Indian dream coming true that only turned into a nightmare. We have a system geared to benefit the rulers and the persons who work for the rulers, to pillage and rob without remorse. This has been and continues to be in accordance with the system and culture established by the British, to serve their Kingdom. Calling our country as a democracy is a misnomer. It is truly a feudalistic democracy with a Government of the people, by some people for some people. The archaic and lackadaisical attitude of all arms of the Government is pathetic. So please don't blame intelligent people for running away. Laws to assist the downtrodden are misused by politicians, law enforcement agencies and administrators to serve their selfish ends, at the cost of talented and capable highly educated engineers, doctors and scientists. Of what use is there in lamenting brain drain and pushing more brains in Indian drains.

Indian nurses are the best. I’m a New Zealander and I always pray that God would send us Indian nurses to fill our job vacancies. They are smart, strong, reliable and awesome friends/colleagues. New Zealand is not a particularly wealthy western country, but our unions have fought hard for fair pay and conditions for our workers, which has made it a good place to live and raise a family. Now we are even attracting highly skilled American and British migrants because of our work conditions are a lot better than American ones, and because of our successful management of the pandemic. I hope that Indians can support their own workers unions to raise their society’s standards and expectations of workers pay and conditions, and make jobs more desirable for skilled workers to stay in.

To be honest, I'd actually like to settle in the ANZ if I get the chance. Already decided though I'm only just starting college, and it's mainly because of many reasons others have already pointed out, some of which I'll mention: The caste-based reservations made me hate the system. Affirmative action is one thing but compromising on quality is a consequence. I can understand to an extent in engineering but letting subpar doctors into the workforce isn't great. It's because of that that I barely missed out on an IIT seat. Thank God for BITS Pilani and its pure-merit system that let me in. Apart from CSE and electrical branches, the other streams of engineering aren't appreciated as much. I love chemistry, so I chose Chemical Engineering, and job prospects are dim for us in the core branches. And I want to enter Academia, so I'd rather make it outside India than inside. I could go on for a lot longer, but not a lot of people read a reply within a comment. But if you're ever more curious you're welcome to ask more about it! It's a common mentality among most of us youth, and unless the government adds some incentives for us general category students to stick around we'll all just go someplace we're appreciated better.

Well said, Adding to that - Not only doctors but I would say this for every other people having aspirations in various fields. Some people getting NOTHING just because of quota system is very frustrating! More over the people from classes considered less privileged are far more wealthy now-a-days. A first step would be to establish a check based on the earnings of the people by the govt irrespective of the class and provide benefits to those who are really in need.I do not say this just for saying because I have actually experienced it seeing people who are wealthy from a different class getting scholarships, exam fee reductions etc while my parents had to work day and night to pay just because I do not belong to the class which gets benefits! I am an Indian living in USA. Biggest factors that led to me to shift to USA: 1. Caste or Caste based reservations. 99-100 percentile needed for most of the exams if you are from general category. 2. As India is densely populated and there are less jobs, every single opportunity has thousands of applicants. It's not fair. 3. If you are a genius and get a private/government job, salary is very less. 4. If you get decent salary, stress is too much and you lose work life balance. WHY, just WHY, go through all this circus? why not move to a different place that appreciates your talent?

Aah... Finally someone is asking right questions. But I think Palki missed, maybe perhaps one of the biggest reason driving this brain drain, which is reservation in almost every field of study. Now "General" category is having minority seats. Irony is on one side we are trying to be world superpower, yet on other side we are still stuck with this ancient concept of "Reservation". Why? Because politics come first than everything else. Our politicians will never completely finish the issues like reservation, roads, infrastructure, quality of life, less pollution, because then what will they promise during next elections.

Excellent piece. As someone who was born, raised and worked in India and loves her motherland, I can list (in no particular order) some of the reasons that motivated me as: 1) work life balance: working for 12 hours everyday is the expected thing to do in a lot of companies in India unlike lot of western countries where I may have to work more than 8-9 hours only occasionally. This leaves me more time with my loved ones and for myself 2) the corruption in India even at the grassroot level. Be it having to bribe the traffic cop even though my paper work is perfect or brining the government officials before building a new house even if the house plan meets all requirements. I can’t think of one place where I don’t have to grease palms despite of all the official requirements being met. This is nothing to do with any particular government 3) better infrastructure and facilities. Most of the taxes people pay in India goes directly to the pockets of politicians and common people don’t benefit much, be it hospitals, roads or other amenities 4) The Bollywood glam of NRI life did entice me a little before I moved abroad. They don’t show that people can live abroad and still be broke and not living in palatial buildings 5) some countries have excellent and accessible healthcare for free (govt funded) 6) The pay if definitely better especially when you convert into Indian currency 7) the reservation system in schools, colleges, workplaces, etc Some of these points may seem like trivial issues but for a lot of people it does get to you eventually
