The US has been cutting tax rates on high-income citizens and corporations for the past 50 years. And it has a huge military sector which is more than half its costs, and has fought expensive wars of choice. Those are the reasons it can't pay its bills without heavy borrowing.

@@imran4006 You last paragraph sounds convincing..but I don't buy it. Why? Because your assertion about "freedom and democracy" is elusive to both the US and the very countries the US attempted to export them to. Take the US for example, yes, you appear to have "freedom and democracy", but if you are to drill down, I don;t think you can lay such a claim. Why? Gun violence means you can't roam the streets freely without wondering if you will return home. Tell the blacks about "freedom and democracy", and they are likely to ask "what do you mean, bro?" As for the countries where wars over "freedom and democracy" were waged, can you honestly say the US had met its target? "freedom and democracy" is but a slogan the US is using to sell its imperialism to the world. While its "like minded" buddies like your good self swallowed it hook, line and sinker, there are many are far from being convinced that the US's intentions are pure.

Remember what Donald Trump said: "If you owe the bank $1 million, the bank had you. If you owe the bank $1 billion, you had the bank". If we apply this concept to countries and geo-politics, USA owing so many countries so much money means that if USA default on their debts, all their debt holders will face massive financial troubles.

Most nations have high debt to GDP ratios. It's the new norm. The more developed a society, the greater debt to GDP ratio a nation can sustain because more developed society have higher sustainable tax rates. The US has the highest debt because it has the highest GDP, is an advanced economy and is the global reserve currency. Debt to GDP ratio is a better way to look at the health of a nation's dept. The second metric is to look at the denomination of the debt. Most US debt is denominated in USD, which is advantageous to a nation, but does not resolve the issue altogether.

No need to worry. The Federal Bank is established to print bills without the gold reserve. Most countries do the same. We are deceived to believe paper is worth the value with figures. More importantly, every country needs to invest in rebuilding and building infrastructures. The IMF austere financial measures are carcinogenic to the economic set back.

Sir, Debt means you are living on your future income, and when the future comes what will you do? Increase your debt level, then the next future comes? Increase the debt level at some point you cannot keep borrowing from your future. Do you understand simple home economics? Now you go to war to either loot, plunder or steal from your neighbour. So did the USA for 70 years. Ha, Ha now you have a formidable neighbour called BRICS. Now you understand my friend? Get work to pay all these debts or you are going to be the modern slave. I hope you are old enough to understand the wars with New Guinea, Japan, Germany, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria and now Ukraine. They are all coming after you for killing and looting.

A very good analysis. Thank you. The hardest hitting bits are at the very beginning when it summarized where all those debts sank into. It is interesting that WION is sinking the boot into India's best buddy. PM Modi is still in the good company of Biden about the defence pact QUAD. Obviously the US still has a lot of leverage over India. As for the core topic here...debts, and massive amount of it, it is incredible that an entity such as the US can still walk around as if it is the best thing since curry was invented. Its latest and "bestest" B-2 Bomber flies on borrowed money. Yet here was General Austin doing song and dance about how powerful the US is. Well, powerful in terms of how quickly the US could eliminate enemies, but can the US build...to build something that is of value to human kinds, to its own people?

The sad thing is that nobody in the administration or congress is interested in reducing the deficit or balance the budget. They are only interested in raising the ceiling debt. I've often wondered how US can call itself the richest country in the world when it is so heavily in debt! Anyway, it is a given that the US can never repay its debt which will continue to increase to well above 50 trillion in less than 20 years. In this respect, the democrats and republicans will support each other to raise the debt ceiling because each will know that it will have to raise the debt ceiling when it comes to power!

Great analysis. You forgot about the massive wasteful military spending on Iraq, Afghanistan, and Ukraine. The Federal government and military keeps getting larger and more wasteful . Much of the debt was amassed due to the War on Terror. Trillions wasted along with the creation of massive federal agencies like DHS, and THS which cost the taxpayers large sums of money but produce no tangible products or goods. With lack of high paying private sector jobs, Washington has created a plethora of Bureaucrat Jobs which compound the problem. Most real industry has been outsourced to Asia.

So the U.S. government has 3 major weaknesses, 1. Corruption in the tax system is due to the wealthy refusing to pay their fair share of taxes. 2. Corruption in the pharmaceutical Health industry due to billionaire Corporations being legally allowed to exploit the health care needs of their fellow Americans for personal profits (Runaway Capitalism). 3. Corruption to circumvent the U.S. Constitution which has two references to "the General Welfare", one occurring in the Preamble and the other in the Taxing and Spending Clause. Basically not just an attack on the poorest of Americans starting with those on Social programs. America can learn a lot from its allies' Social program models.

So 31 trillion dollars in absolute terms might be the largest national debt in the world but not as a percentage of national debt to GDP. The United States national debt to GDP ratio currently stands at 128% by contrast the Japanese national debt to GDP ratio at 268% Italy's national debt to GDP ratio at 168% and Spain's national debt to GDP ratio at 134%. If China dumps there bonds it will hurt them more than it does the US. If they knew it would hurt us more they would have done it along time ago. Another point is that countries invest in the US becuase it has the strongest economy.

The US already cannot pay its debt. What it pays is debt service, 1 trillion 200 billion in 2023, or about 3x it gold reserve, and it cannot pay from taxes collected. It pays by selling new debt. If there are insufficient bids for its debt, the Federal reserve take it, which means money is printed to buy debt just to pay interest. It's debt trap doom loop.

And Dick Cheney once said, "deficits don't matter." Well, I will say that he said that for some reason other than simply responding to Tim Russets' question. Has it occurred to you that perhaps he knows something that we don't? In my opinion, he knows something is coming that will abolish nations' debt, solve all the economic problems, will be short-lived, but will accomplish its purpose. However, it will be dire to say the least.

In order to settle this USA has to go for zero taxation like Saudi, because all the wealthy people of USA is settling themselves in SAUDI. In order to bring all of them back and to attract the other countries civilians in to USA, this step is good one. All their spending will increases USA's economy.
