Thank you for this. In the UK we are just hearing about the leadership race to elect our new prime minister in the media. The events in Sri Lanka and predicted food problems are barely heard about. Debt is fine but only if you have an asset to back it. Problem with third world countries is that they have no liquid assets. Countries in the West can print money which is accepted by producers. The Ten Principles of the Georgia Guidestones, America's Strangest Monument Are you familiar with the Georgia Guidestones? When someone first mentioned it to me I thought it both interesting and strange. Located 90 miles East of Atlanta, the monument consists of a set of 10 guidelines inscribed on a stone manmade structure in eight modern languages. At the top there's also a short message inscribed in four ancient language scripts. Some people are calling it an "American Stonehenge." The slabs and capstone stand just over 19 feet tall. The creators of this monument have chosen to remain anonymous and the man who conveyed the instructions to the Eberton Granite Finishing Company 19 miles away used a pseudonym. Obviously it cost a pretty penny to produce and install. Purportedly the group behind this had spent twenty years in planning. The inscriptions are in the following languages: English, Spanish, Swahili, Hindi, Hebrew, Arabic, Traditional Chinese, and Russian. The ten commandments inscribed there are as follows: 1. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature. 2. Guide reproduction wisely - improving fitness and diversity. 3. Unite humanity with a living new language. 4. Rule passion - faith - tradition - and all things with tempered reason. 5. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts. 6. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court. 7. Avoid petty laws and useless officials. 8. Balance personal rights with social duties. 9. Prize truth - beauty - love - seeking harmony with the infinite. 10. Be not a cancer on the Earth - Leave room for nature - Leave room for nature. A lot of it sounds "nice" but one gets a little concerned about the first two, the first especially. I'm curious how they propose to reduce the earth's population by seven billion in order to fulfill their concept of balance with nature. Does the second statement refer to a return to eugenicists helping create a more perfect race? Is it Brave New World inspired, as if Huxley's book were a manual, instead of a red flag? Heres what WIRED wrote about the Guidestones: The Georgia Guidestones may be the most enigmatic monument in the US: huge slabs of granite, inscribed with directions for rebuilding civilization after the apocalypse. Only one man knows who created them-and he's not talking. The strangest monument in America looms over a barren knoll in northeastern Georgia. Five massive slabs of polished granite rise out of the earth in a star pattern. The rocks are each 16 feet tall, with four of them weighing more than 20 tons apiece. Together they support a 25,000-pound capstone. Approaching the edifice, it's hard not to think immediately of England's Stonehenge or possibly the ominous monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Built in 1980, these pale gray rocks are quietly awaiting the end of the world as we know it. You can find the rest of that story HERE.

An excellent summary of a problem largely below my and my friends' radar here in the USA. I would like to see this group's prioritization of the solutions proposed here and to see what timelines their analysts believe to be achievable in those places . I also note that the solutions proposed here are monetary. I suggest that any viable solution to the current crisis must also address the shortfall in real food production, and such solutions need to begin implementation immediately. I'm just a computer guy who's a hobby researcher, but I cannot find anything close to a comprehensive analysis of programs intended to raise food self-sufficiency among those places that import their food (and so are vulnerable to both supply fluctuations and subsequent price fluctuations). Can your group point to some?

I'm from Andhra Pradesh, a state mentioned by Palki Sharma in India. We are here facing the inflation due to our incompetent leaders. Only motto of our CM is to borrow the money with high interest and distribute it to the people through social welfare schemes. I agree that Welfare of the people is important but development is foremost to that. The income generated from the development should lead a state but not mere borrowing and feeding the people to make them more lazy and useless. I'm pretty sure that if it continues like this, our state would definitely become another Sri Lanka.

But a leader needs to be visionary and here all these CM PM come in power thinking just about next 5 yrs and how to win in the next election and never think about what to do for overall development of state or country.. I was in Mexico in May 1986 when the oil crash caused hyperinflation. Shopkeepers had 2 prices, a morning price & evening price, that's how fast prices were going up. Another side effect of hyperinflation is shortage of necessities. Entrepreneurs stop buying because they are uncertain if they can make a profit. Frijoles of all things were sold out all across Michoacan.

Self sustainability is the answer. Sri Lanka has every natural resource for it to be self sustainable but the politicians and their business friends do not want the country to produce enough because when importing things from another country they can earn money through commissions and corruption. Sri Lanka has the natural resources and workforce for it to produce enough foods, vehicles, medicines, petrol and diesel, and electricity. Government do not want the country to be self sufficient because the correct politicians will miss out on import Commissions. Btw sri Lanka do not have petroleum as it's major contributor to economy. Sri Lanka has natural resources which was supporting it's tourism sector. Natural resources which can generate power is the main reason Sri Lanka and most developing nations would collapse.

There is a small chance you gonna be born in Finland, Sweeden, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany etc and live a decent life with opportunities and actually have a future. Be born in countries like Turkey,Greece, Balkans in general or African and most Asian countries and chances are your life is going to be torture just to put some food on the table.

Thanks for sharing. I felt like I was in an economics class. I am from Kenya. I have jotted down key points to raise to our incompetent leaders who care about their bellies and not the ordinary citizen. I am shocked and dumfounded by the stats especially in developing countries. Cry my beloved country!!

Sri Lanka's 51Billion debt: 81% owned by western financial institutions: Black Rock, Morgan Stanley, Prudential (US), UBS(Swiss), Ashmore Group, HSBC( British), Allianz (German), International Monetary Fund (IMF), Asian Development Bank (US). China: 10%, India: 2%. Sri Lanka tried to negotiate with the IMF for the 17th time to restructure, not successful. 64.6% debt in US currency, 15% in Euro, 10% in Japanese yen, and 5% in Chinese yuen. Tax cut, dropped in tourism, high inflation, civil war, corruption, and mounting western debts brought on bankruptcy. Really smart and racist to blame it on China!

1)HSBC is not ‘British’ 2) Why was this country running up a debt they knew they could never repay. That’s called fraud. 3) You, the people, voted. You, the people, got the govt you voted for. So why is this the world’s problem? 4) I am royally pissed off because my govt is taking tax from me to donate to YOUR country and YOU allow your ELECTED leaders to shove it in a private bank account.

In Kenya, we simply got souled out by our leaders. The debt crisis now trickles down to our future generations. Very unfortunate.

Our authoritarian government in the US put us in debt we can never come out from under. There is no end in sight to the endless money printing that is going to put us in hyper inflation. Most of my fellow Americans are to dumb and think America could never fall.

@@bdog4280 yes, but your down payment actually meant something. The high interest rates kept the prices of houses lower so your down payment had a bigger impact. That's why high interest rates encourage saving and low interest rates encourage debt.
