I love this format. It's well built and goes to the point. Definitely the kind of stuff I am looking for. Thank you very much and go on! For your information, you seem to look at and remember the number of one unit to find it then in the table of organization. Alternatively, you can select your unit with the left mouse button on the operational map, then go to the table of organization (either via the button on the left side or via middle mouse button) and then scroll through the table and all units inside the battlegroup you have selected will be highlighted in green. I think it is a very convenient way to read the table. Keep up the very pleasant-to-watch work!

Awesome format and content, look forward to more. I’ve played pretty much the full spectrum of Second World War video games, from Combat Mission to Command Ops, Post Scriptum to ww2 Online - and IMO Graviteam games are unrivalled. The way the battles evolve organically, with burning wrecks rolling down hills, little pockets of infantry holding out amongst the smoke and rubble - it never gets stale.

Hey WarSimmer! Your videos were recommended to me again by YT and I find myself rewatching here and there! Some quick things in case other viewers might have similar questions: The 88 could penetrate 84mm of armor at 2km, or 1.25 miles. At 1km, the 88 is at a big disadvantage vs the 76mm Soviet tank guns, who only need to land a HE close to the 88 and the fragmentation cone and blast field will kill the 88 crew. To take full advantage of the FlaK 36 / 88 you have to position them as far back as possible, with lighter AT screens further forward. 88mm --→ 50mm → 37mm -> Infantry. I hotkey my AT teams, open fire with the 37, then the 50 to distract the enemy tanks, then the 88. Makes a big difference to not have the enemy commanders spotting your 88 before it gets 2-3 shots off. 1/

kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKnJZIWLbNF7rbs This StuG III B is short-barreled, yes, but it carried HEAT rounds and performed extremely well in an AT role. It has a very low silhouette and should be placed in ambush spots between houses, etc, where the enemy is likely to present a side shot. It should not be on fire at will when facing enemy tanks - use only the fire arc to increase the chances of a kill on the first shot. I set the fire arc to 200m and I’ve racked up several T-34 kills and a couple of disabled KV-1s this way. In this campaign, I use the StuGs to clear trees and bushes from in front of my 88s, so I can put those 88s back a bit in the woods and then drive the StuGs past them in tight formation to clear their field of fire. Micromanagement, but effective. Also I place dug-in trucks just in front of their positions so enemy shells don’t get a clean impact. 2/

03:13: the entrenchment of some of the German units seems to point in the "wrong" direction" (= inwards). Why is that so and is it of any importance?
@TheWarSimmer
@TheWarSimmer 5 жыл бұрын
No sir, no importance at all. It's simply a graphical representation on the strategic map that the battlegroup is entrenched. Keep in mind, however, that if you move them outisde of their local square in the deployment phase they will no longer be entrenched.

Ayyy saw this already 1-2 weeks ago and completely forgot to say thanks for playing the Germans, haven’t thought you‘d do it so quickly! Format is good and enjoyable as well as the commentary and of course the commanding of troops, good cinematic representation as always. Got that dlc aswell and like the early war stuff, really tough dlc though as the Germans with all these tanks the Russians field. Looking forward to this campaign but also remember the cruel star for the russian side, if you just focus on these two you have a solid base for future videos with each of the factions. Cruel Star is at quite a cliffhanger I must admit since you wiped the German AT-platoons and are now ready to bring these lend-lease valentines in, looking forward to this aswell :)

Hey WarSimmer - love your stuff. Why don't you right-click on the Battlegroup unit icon in each battlegroup and hand-pick the type of artillery that you want the spotter from? Otherwise the game treats your "assignment" as a request and may or may not send you the Spotter that you want. E.g. in some situations you may want larger calibre and in others the smaller 10.5cm. Also you didn't add any extra platoons to your SPGs or artillery batteries, which you can do by right-clicking the placeholder "Scout", "Support", or "Inf. or Motor Inf." icons. You can also right-click and replace at least one AT gun unit with AA (88s).
@TheWarSimmer
@TheWarSimmer 5 жыл бұрын
Appreciate it man. Sometimes I hold back a little on certain support, especially if it's a longer game, but thought it was best to bring the 88s with the StuGGs asap. Wasn't aware you could pick the specific calibre on off-map arty though. Awesome tip and I'll be sure to apply it in the next vid. There's already been a couple things brought to my attention that I can do in the next one that I wasn't aware of. There's so many knowledgeable people such as yourself in these comments that I've learned a ton recently.
@spellcaster39ify
@spellcaster39ify 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheWarSimmer Thanks bud. Also at kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKnJZIWLbNF7rbs you do not need to place the spotter in a position to see the fall of shells because it's pre-planned support only. That is indicated by the white "checklist" icon on the support icon. Your spotter can just plot and time the barrages, which are called in to the battery as soon as you move to the combat phase. You cannot adjust nor cancel nor add any fire missions after that.

@TheWarSimmer
@TheWarSimmer 5 жыл бұрын
You want to use artillery whenever possible, and be sure to use smoke. Make sure that any time you attack you have a 2:1 ratio or higher of troops in the local area vs the enemy. You want to also make sure that you dismount your infantry from their half-tracks, and you can even separate them and then hotkey each group to control them individually (i.e. CTRL+1 for infantry, and whenever you press 1 you will have that infantry selected). Here is a good guide: www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3137363&mpage=1&key=&#3137363

War Simmer, please. Check your RESERVE. Hover your mouse on the blue bar(like this one 7:16) to check what possible units that can reinforce your platoons. Each division will have their own reserves. Check the blue bar to see what they have. HQ reserve is open to everyone. HQ usually has powerful artillery like rockets, but only a few. The blue bar will stated like this: Reserve: 13 squads HQ reserve: 2 squads Your Under the cruel star is quite painful since you hardly assign any artillery spotter. This is crucial for the Soviet.

88mm Guns on a flat trajectory were used in an emergency from 1940 onwards, not on the Eastern Front. By the Eastern Front using 88s as AT was well established. That's why you should not base your reading on only one book. That's why you don't seem to know about the Matilda Tank, which caused similar problems for Germans with its cast armour. So the Matilda had a puny 2 pounder gun, but was impervious to everything, even carefully laid out pakfronts of PaK 36s, what you call the 50mm guns. They also ruined extant German Sword and shield tactics, as well as the hammer and anvil development between the mobile tanks and these pakfronts. This was one of the secrets of early German tank success that the allies did not realise was an aspect. Most famously, Rommel had to fire the commanding officer of 5th Panzer Regiment and some other officers for refusing to engage with the Matildas. Obviously I know about the Eastern Front from "Knights of the Black Cross" and "War on the Eastern Front" by Greenhill military publishing, but I have much more than one book on this subject, I have a whole collection. Apart from that I learnt this in practicality about Soviet Tanks in Steel Panthers, where you experience the same problems throughout 1942. In that I found that that actually PaK 36s are good against those tanks, from the side and behind and you can set your Pak Fronts as traps to only get them after they've gone past, I also noticed the T70s at 21:34, which, obviously your infantry can deal with, let alone your "Doorknocker" 37mms. Sometimes in wargames on the Eastern Front, that's all you have, 37mms to get the job done. Sometimes you have to shove your tanks right up behind T34s and kill them at point blank range, sometimes assigning a whole tank platoon to that job, it gets done, just like in real life. I apprehend that you don't have armour for this one, but it's really not that bad, although that is why I often mention to people that american troops will not fight unless they have all the toys to hand. European troops are not like that from thousands of years of war. Actually the main problem that T34s had in the early war was bad crews. You could get them to abandon the tank with machine gun fire, which is extremely loud inside the tank, but people usually brazen it out, but not soviet tank crews in every case and again in SP you could do that. I don't think you quite get the tactics of tank trapping and stalking that was also so important on the Eastern Front. All tanks when buttoned up had 10 metre blind spots around them that if they did not have men with them, another reason the Russians used tank-riders, you could stalk them at will to lay a mine on their track or anything. You are not going to get them frontally or from the side at any range, forget about that. Rather just the heavy tanks, not the cars and extremely light tanks. You need to get at them from properly masked positions. You need to separate the tanks from the infantry as well to then be able to stalk them or keep "ringing their bell" (machine gun fire) until they abandon ship. There were no T34s there, by the way, just KVs and they don't have sloping armour, just 100mm thick slabs of armour put up square.

23:29 T70s, not T26s, they look totally different to each other.

35:59, funny, I was just saying out loud that 88 was too exposed once anything gets past the bend, but they didn't even need to do that.

52:30 I'm pretty sure in real life your commanders would be really pissed off with you losing an 88 and would threaten to never ever assign them to you again. Those were still technically deployed at corps level and were manned by the luftwaffe. It was common to assign them to the front that they clearly did that because of your struggles on day one. They gave you a troop, but they would have busted your balls about it. They'd expect a 3-1 kill ratio to you as the defender (especially vs the red army), so they wouldn't be happy with the maths you handed in either. Of course as commander on the ground you might say that to your men, but honestly, the brass would not be that happy with that performance so far. This is mostly an infantry battle for you, and you're not using them. Eliminate their soft, isolate the tanks, stalk and trap, stalk and trap until they leave. Trick is to let them get past before you give away the element of surprise. It was really effective in the Normandy Bocage. By this stage of the war, most AT guns pointed backwards for effective trapping, never engage the first vehicle.

What sound mod or combination of sound mods are you using?

I'm using a modified version of VAPASOM where I tried to give the effects more punch in audacity. I am modifying it further after the cruel star and fateful strike campaign to change the MGs and small arms.

@@TheWarSimmer ah ok. That was one I used to use. I am rocking the small arms plus one (nice explosions and incoming arty sounds) but with the RO2 sound mod on top to give the small arms a nice sound... but yeah it's always annoying because every mod has strengths and weakness... there is always something that drives me nuts or isn't logical.

Now that you mention it, I may be using it in combo with the RO2 as well but can't remember. There were some good sfx in that one.

First time I have heard about this game. How long has it been out. It looks extremely interesting. A replacement for Combat Mission?? Better or worse or just not a fair comparison? Nicely done episode as well.

I think it's more of a close combat replacement. It's like if we got close combat III in the 90s and finally this came out in the 2010s

@@TheWarSimmer Really. That is a bit disappointing but I have only seen a couple of these videos and skimmed them as well. It looked like there was greater depth. So it seems that I should just stick with Combat Mission.

@@TheWarSimmer I am up to my eyeballs in War in the East 2 but I will give this one a go once I am in need for some tactical action. I noticed that it has a battalion sized campaign (or am I mistaken) which I would very much like. Combat Mission can do similar but this one seemed to be very true to historical recreation. Anyway, I have subscribed and you and this game are on my list. There seems to be an abundance of very good wargames now tactical/operation & strategic. Even retired there is not enough time in the day...
