Gravity Fed Permanent Mold Aluminum Casting

A short video showing how a simple permanent mold can be made for repeat casting of aluminum parts. Details on the mold are at the end of the video. Note some features found on professional molds such as risers, leader pins and ejectors have been left out for simplicities sake. Enjoy.

I have a 10 inch permanent mold made of aluminum. It is a ships bell mold and I use a pattern that fits into the mold and I use sand core. I pour the aluminum in the set mold and it does not spew and I can knock a new aluminum bell right out of the mold. I have used it many times and it always works. I have a foundry made of fire brick and use wood and a blower and melt the metal in an iron pot.

Would vibrating the mold (possibly even at supersonic frequencies) help get rid of air-pockets?

How did you made the permanent mold and sprue? what material did you made these two out of? i am trying to find a cheap and good way to make a permanent mold about the same size as yours.

the mold and sprue are made from low carbon steel and it seemed to work fine.
