You don't know how much your review means as a SOLAR fan❤ Colors was written and composed by SOLAR solely, everything about the concept from clothes to location to bringing House of Love to center stage was her idea to bring about acceptance and highlight the queer community in a conservative korea VERY DIRECTLY AND UPFRONT. During the promotion of the album she constantly spoke about it,brought the dancers to NATIONAL TELEVISION (1ST TIME) and was met with rage, homophobia and majority kpop stans claiming her as a queer baiter and using queer community as "props" when infact she wrote this in 2022 with queer community in mind. This isn't the first time she's been active in the community, she's been working in support for queer since 2016. The song is FIRST FULL VOGUING CHOREOGRAPHY IN KPOP as stated by Mother Ran the Choreographer herself. This fact wasn't digested by some so they started demeaning Solar's dance skills calling her a "noguer" and that she should stop making fun of the community especially on twittr 😔 She practices her best and i feel SO SO HAPPY for you to genuinely appreciate it. She's definitely a REALLY GOOD dancer and loves to take on new challenges as she's learnt pole dancing, belly dancing apart from regular choreos. Trivia : the shooting location is itaewon gay club/bar and the choreographer has been her long time fan❤ Ps- Colors influenced the kpop industry to bring the "house" genre as a trend so much so big corporations like Hybe did a similar concept for their girl group and more are following the suit but the song still remains the most vivid and straightforward irt Voguing & House edm.

Yes!! I was hoping some info on this would be in the comment section, you summarised a lot of details so well
@flame8552Ай бұрын
Your comment sums it up really well! (pls pin it kind sir) it was amazing to see her bring all the dancers with her onto Korean national tv! Solar always loves to challenge herself, and she really outdid herself with this MV, song, and numerous performances on music shows!
@blairwrelos1891Ай бұрын
Agree with everything. Just a small note tho, we don't know if colors really influenced the industry to bring "House" genre. In dance, Riize had a whole house inspired comeback with impossible and Seventeen's maestro also has the dance break inspired with house steps. For the musical genre, k-pop has had a lot of House genres since F(x) 4 Walls and Shinee's View. Even LSFM had Eve, Psyche And Bluebeard's wife that explains Crazy. I don't think it's bad to say that Solar really brought the ballroom scene to k-pop industry with this cb but we can't discredit that other artists have done things in their respective means as well. Just a small observation here tho 😅
@blairwrelos1891Ай бұрын
Ohh YK what, I'm just realising maybe you were specifically referring to Ballroom Music when you mentioned "House genre" and not the whole genre in itself. In that case, Ballroom music isn't just the House genre but a mix with techno, disco, etc. So calling it only the House genre is quite confusing 😅.

4:20 I love how Solar is clearly giving the dancer this moment to shine, and I just wish the camera took better notice of that. A small tweak to the framing and movement of the camera could have done a lot to highlight the talent on display in that moment. (Wardrobe too, like you mention.)

Solar has been one of the very very few idols who weren’t afraid to show their love and support to the gay community from the very beginning of their career. So her doing this wasn’t unexpected but it’s still such a huge thing to do and we love love love her for that

And this is why Mamamoo has "mama" in their name: they're truly MOTHERS. Obsessed with what Solar did here! Thank you for your breakdown and finding the other artists names!
@al_xciaАй бұрын
You should see her live stages for this song and how the whole collab came about. Mamamoo, SOLAR specially never half ass whatever she puts her mind to. Miss Ma'am learned pole dancing in a couple of days for some short scenes on their(Mamamoo) Egotistic MV, fell in love with it and spend the next year and some practicing and learning everything she could about the whole "culture/movement" and sharing about it on her youtube. Same with the ball room scene, she's shown interest in it for the longest before COLORS came to be.
@matsuokeiАй бұрын
I was REALLY hoping you'd see this! Especially since Ran Love is the choreographer/movement director for "Colors". Solar is a member of Mamamoo, a group known not only for their insane vocals, but for constantly defying norms of the K-Pop industry. And they never shy away from giving their 110%. I don't know if it was something Solar was adamant about when doing "Colors", but *all the dancers for every single live performance for this song were the same dancers from the performance video - that is to say, the members of the House of Love.* Not only that, in the music shows where they put information about the song, the House of Love, along with the names of every single member, were mentioned as the performance happened. It was released around mid-May, so basically Solar was telling Korea pride month was around the corner. Thank you for taking the time to see it, Gravity! ❤

I already love Solar's Colors and its performance video / MV but this reaction makes me appreciate it even more, especially how Solar and her team / agency to give spotlights and platforms for professional voguers from the scene House of Love. Some fun facts for people who don't know: Solar wrote and composed Colors on a memo 2 years ago with voguing and ballroom scene in mind. She really did the music for the queer community and people who share the same kind of value to appreciate the diversity and uniqueness of each individual. Solar invited the House of Love dancers to perform with her for Colors stages on Korean national TVs three times during her comeback in this May including SBS The Show, MBC Show Champion, and KBS The Seasons - Zico's Artist.

Thank you for the reaction! I'm a Mamamoo fan who's been obsessed with your content lately, so this is really exciting! Great commentary! Before Colors I knew little about Vogue and very indirectly because my sister has friends in that scene. Thanks to your commentary I understand a lot more, I didn’t know the different types of vogue (old and new) and how much of each there was in the video! Solar herself was the one who decided to ask Love Ran and House of Love to choreograph, and Solar composed and wrote the song herself too 😊 I got to meet the very talented House of Love through this video, a lot of moomoos (Mamamoo’s fandom name) follow them now too and they appeared on national TV dancing with Solar, it was all really cool 😊
@NathyIsabellaАй бұрын
Yayy! Finally!! You know, Solar loves doing challenges, no wonder she's the first one to commit to doing the full choreo thing, also she loves the community! Also, Love Ran has posted the original choregraphy by her if you wanna check it out... Most of it was maintained the same

Solar is my favorite singer world wide and Mamamoo my favorite group. Many times they sing genres really I did not know I would like, though it is more of mamamoo makes any genre great and I did not know there was such a thing as Vogue as a style of dance until Solar did it in this MV. She does credit the house of love and talks about how she wanted specifically to do it right which is why she found the house of love and worked with them to put out this video. Solar is that type, she does not do anything half way. So it doesnt surprise me that this was done well.

if you have time to spare, check out sung hanbin's "bad boy" studio choom artist of the month performance! it has a pretty intense hands-focused section, and though it's tutting rather than vogue (before debuting as an idol, he was actually a professional dancer specialising in waacking and tutting!!) i still think you might enjoy that part!:)

Thanks for this video, I'm not from the community but when i first saw the video for this song I felt so happy that the community seemed to be showcased very honestly and put on a pedestal. Thank you for this commentary! Solar's authenticity of expression is one of countless reasons to love her. Yes, she's a workaholic too, but this was a passion project for her and you can see she sincerely appreciates the people and the craft of the ballroom scene she immersed herself in while learning to Vogue. I remember when this first came out and online haters were accusing her of using these dancers as props and that was so baffling to me. So thank you for sharing your knowledgeable perspective and reinforcing what the rest of us sane people could plainly see- Solar loves these dancers, wanted to give a platform to their community and to share the joyfulness of it all.

The main difference with this and other songs with vogue elements is Solar reached out to Love Ran to choreograph the entire song. In k-pop, the usual is the labels ask choreographers to submit demos then the labels often times piecemeal choreos from different demos which explains the sprinkled in elements of various dance styles in one song's overall choreography

I personally recommend Kwon EunBi's Glitch for a coming reaction. Whilst the choreography isn't the most insane, it does lend from vogue in its more iconic parts. The MV is great for the concept, but doesn't show off the choreo that well. The dance practise would probably be the best choice. Love these videos, seeing you share your well of experience with all of us!

thank you so much for the reaction sweetheart, it gives a bit more of depth to the video in the sense of the choreography and how its much more vogue than a lot of other performances (bcs its choreographed by a house) like you said, much love 💜

Thanks for sharing your expertise and your appreciation for what Solar did in Colors. I'm not a dancer, let alone a voguer, and I learned some new things, both from you and the folks in the comments. I noticed a Mamamoo fan commented that the lyrics are a little basic so I thought I'd add my 2 cents on that topic. Solar's album consists of 6 songs in completely different genres, 5 of which she wrote or co-wrote herself (lyrics & music), and she spelled the album title Colours to emphasize Ours as a celebration of diversity and community in both music and people. Those ideas are obviously expressed in the song Colors and I think they also underlie the line "I want a black and a white one and a pink and a purple." The choreo makes it clear she's referring to nail colors but there are often multiple levels of meaning in MMM lyrics & MVs and I think she's also talking about people. I wouldn't be surprised if Solar chose those colors to imply that we should go beyond the divisive classification of people based on skin tone (black and white) to include colors that better represent their personality and sense of identity such as pink or purple. MMM have long been allies of the queer community and many of their songs include empowering messages about self-love and acceptance of others for their uniqueness and individuality. 😂

Alexa Back in Vogue was choreographed by LA-based House of Sam but not being in LA I wouldn't know if they're a kiki house, or just a dance crew. XG - TGIF was choreographed by Sienna Lalau. Also not sure because I know Hawaii is technically part of the USA but it's kind of different from what I can tell This Love by Shinhwa was choreographed predominantly by one of the Shinhwa members Lee Minwoo with contributions by another member Jun Jin. No involvement in the current iteration of Korean ballroom, just inspired by Madonna I guess. Kkili Kkili by G-reyish (now disbanded). Pretty small company. Probably took a bunch of choreo demos and picked the bits they liked most Ladida by Everglow was choreographed by Lia Kim (funky lia, popper/choreographer of 1Million fame)), Tina Boo (also 1Million), and Haejun (part of the Korean ballroom scene. also a waacker) others have made a lot of good suggestions and I know Love Ran was involved in the choreography process so I highly rate those as well. I'm a member of a on hiatus kiki house in Australia and a lot of my kpop friends recommended that I watch these clips. I'm not a professional dancer though, my AUDHD ass cannot deal with all the work required to make it my career (also I'm in my 30s, these bones creak and I need to see the physio every week lmao) randomly, not k-pop Gustaph - Because of You was placed 7th in the Eurovision Song Context in 2023 and the video clip has a couple of voguers but Gustaph's job is to sing not dance. But I loved it and the live performance briefly features PussCee West

Tbh the reason authentic dance (not just Vouge) gets dumbed down so much is because the idols usually learn the dance less than a week before shooting the music video, usually closer to 2-3 days before and there still may be changes that they have to unlearn/relearn in that time period
