In the Fallout lore/history/etc. instead of focusing technological research into creating the microprocessor (think CPUs), they focused on making better nuclear/atomic energy production and left computers as giant machines that take up entire rooms. A few organizations still developed smaller computers, but nothing nearly as efficient or small as what we have in real life. There's also a major plot-hole with the existence of sentient androids and it mains comes from no one actually having the computing power to make them, let alone give them a sentient AI and have the whole computer fit inside their heads.

Culture didn't just "stick" in the 50's. There is some evidence that some of the post-50's counterculture like hippies and punks existed, but that as the resource wars began and got worse culture intentionally aped the post-war 50s. The retro-tech is in large part because the development of transistors was delayed long enough for alternatives such as miniaturized vacuum tubes to take root. The "divergence" is when their history starts to really be different from ours. There are difference before "the divergence", including some changes far before humanity existed, and the physics of radiation is different, but the 1950s is the point where the historical events of human civilization stop lining up with what happened in our worlds. The background is mostly worked backwards from the aesthetic that Black Isle wanted for Fallout. Between that and Bethesda turning up the "retro-futurism" knob, lore can occasionally be a bit convoluted or nonsensical, especially as new info about the pre-war world is added by new games.
@manboy47204 жыл бұрын
all that stuff about jet being pre-war (it wasn't, it was made by a guy post-war) and x-01 power armour being created post-war (i think it was originally pre-war, but the development of x-o1 went into post-war)? that stuff was just stupid and i don't know why they changed lore like that. also do correct me on anything cus i don't keep up on fallout lore.
@racercowan4 жыл бұрын
@@manboy4720 Bethesda invented X-01 power armor, it's always been a pre-war armor that Bethesda said is the in-world inspiration for the APA (pre-existing lore is that the Enclave tried and failed to make an original PA design, and they just improved on what already existed, so that actually fits nicely). The pre-war Jet was a pretty bad slip-up, though Myron is at least a little full of shit thinking that he invented the idea of huffing cow dung. I think high Int character can call him on it, and there's someone else in-game who mentions Jet as something before him (though that was declared non-canon in a non-canon source).
@TheHustlingFox4 жыл бұрын

Fallout timeline: Pretty much the same as ours until the 1950’s, when the Cold War didn’t end. As a result, nuclear power became used for everything. As a result, transistors were never invented, nor were color TV’s, but anything that could be helpful for wars, such as robots, guns, bombs, etc were, because the priority was put into tools for wartime. This continued for about 125 years, until 2077 when either China or America nuked the other, and a response from the one being nuked (called MOAR NUKES) responded. No, it is never confirmed that China bombed America first. That’s what the Americans in-game believe, because “the bad guy would nuke first, and we’re not bad, so it must be them.”

This whole ordeal made me realize that I might never want to see him play a long-form rpg ever again. The whole key debacle was especially ridiculous because if he was patient and took the time to activate and read the terminals then he would’ve known exactly where it was, but instead a chat member has to tell him and he gets angry at the game for not giving him a hint... which it totally does if you do some actual exploring . And I don’t know, but the dicking around with the glitches and such felt like major wheel-spinning. The game is interesting enough without the constant breaks and goofs, it just made everything feel drawn out and pointless. I love ya Fruit but these types of games are so obviously not your preferred territory... sorry if I sound needlessly bitchy but that’s only because New Vegas is probably my favorite game of all time.

these kinds of games are absolutely not my preferred genre, I am mostly attracted to this game because of the atmosphere and the fact that the game's programming is held together with silly putty; that being said the key part was still abysmal. I don't like it when games waste my time and that's exactly what the "60 hour game" model tries to do constantly, which wears me down and leaves me uninterested in the game's world or mechanics. I spent enough time searching for that key in what I thought was a pretty logical way (talking to/killing the mutants on the mountain and searching their bodies) and I'm not gonna say this puzzle is great design and all is forgiven just because it gives you a hint upon reading some computer terminal. other games are capable of having compelling puzzles and story moments without requiring that you read every line of boring flavor text in order to feel like you're getting the intended experience; so I find it difficult to make excuses for games like this. I don't want to come across as overly defensive or abrasive but I am most certainly going to play some games that are "not for me" again in the future and I'm probably going to criticize them for similar moments as well, so if that frustrates you you may want to just not watch them instead.

it goes to show how much personal taste comes into things... "drawn out and pointless" is exactly how I felt about the game by the time I stopped playing and the glitches were the only thing keeping me playing.

grayfruit Different strokes, different folks applies to this. Even if you personally thought that the terminals were boring and not compelling, same with the story past Benny’s attempted murder, I personally thought those were the better parts, and wish you would have given them a chance. Granted, you probably would not have liked them anyhow so it’s just pulling teeth, but it’s still something I/possibly we would have personally preferred. Still gonna watch you play some shitty games like Apex if you ever decide to dip into those waters.

That “black hole” part made the game feel like Stalker
