8:41 To elaborate on the story of how Ms. Pacman came to be: Ms. Pacman was originally going to be an "Enhancement kit," a modified game board that added new things and made the game harder by reprogramming it (the worlds earliest for of rom hacks), made by a few college drop outs. The thing is they got sued by Atari for making an "Enhancement kit" for a game called missile command and settled out of court by saying they would work for Atari. Not wanting all the work to go to waste they got in contact with Midway and lied saying they had won the Atari lawsuit and made an offer to Midway to release the kit officially while paying the dropouts some of the profit, saying that if Midway rejected it and then tried to sue them for releasing it anyways, that Midway would loose the lawsuit. Needless to say Midway accepted the offer to release it officially and we got Ms. Pacman.

I'd like to see something like this for the Championship Editions in the future. The NES version made for that Namco game collection has now been spread around online as a usable ROM file, and fun fact: it was included by collaborating with a fan who had begun making that version of the game as a fan project years prior! Also you're right about original Pac-Man having no RNG. It could technically be called deterministic, but unless you're either doing TAS or following a pattern, it's not likely you'll be able to influence anything more than making a ghost turn a particular way in the immediate future. _Also_ I keep editing this comment but it's true that the killscreen in the original game is pretty much the end. There are still a few dots in the right half of the screen, but it's not enough to count as clearing the board even if you get them all. I'm pretty sure the perfect score for the game includes getting all the dots in the killscreen on all of the player's remaining lives

in og pac-man, the power pill timer is effectively 0 so it does do nothing. _but_ it actually does do something. technically the ghosts get scared for less than a frame, which is enough to alter the behavior of the ghosts, and they might do things like turn right around. basically, picking up a power pill late game gives the ghosts a free intersection which can be advantageous, or disadvantageous, in some situations.

@@silverfoil8854 not ANCIENT, it’s about GA pac-man (canonically named pacster) ‘s dad. he looks different in GA because he got a toupee. and to explain the ghost gang's major appearance, personality, power (like being able to Paralyze pac-man by “chomping” him right back) and headcount differences (r.i.p. any chance of seeing a redesigned sue) is because they’re different sets of characters. the original ghosts (including a *male* pinky) were always ghosts, while the new ones were actual undead pac-worlders who got drafted into the PAC-CIVIL-WAR on the losing side, died horribly, and now teamed up with the son of their namesake's arch enemy. as to why they share the names of the ghost monsters, their parents were racist towards them yellow pac-worlders, so they thought naming their kids after notorious criminals was a good idea. as for the similarities: power pellets grow on trees in both pac-man sr. wore the same hat in both some unnamed characters from the hanna Barbara cartoon resemble characters from ghostly adventures pac-worlders are shown in various colors other than yellow in both series.

There was actually a baby pac-man cabinet at the retro arcade near where i live, unfortunately the pinball half didn't work so the entire machine was unplugged and unused. really wish i could have played it! The reason pac-land used your number keys, was because it didn't use a joystick, it was a 3 button game, 2 jump buttons on the left and right, and buttons for moving left and right in the middle of the cabinet. not related but i got 3rd place on pacman 99 the other day thought i'd mention it

I'd love to read up on why arcade games like that Pacman rom have that weird startup jumbled garbage sequence. It feels like some sort of decompression, setup or just testing routine where it uses all its memory to do it but doesn't actually care what's on the screen yet. No idea.
