The singers sang live in this show, but the orchestra and backing vocals were recorded in advance. Diana sounds the same: both in live concerts and in recordings. Rare timbre, perfect vocal technique, wide range. Diana is a unique singer. I've never heard anything like this 🔥🔥🔥

Yeah I saw a few clips of her in a rawer setting before doing this reaction and her voice was right in that ballpark tonally. She sounds like that and it's awesome! Unique is definitely the right word, don't really know how else to describe the way she utilises some not so conventional sounds and techniques into something so musical. It's really cool to see.

No effects in post production- that is really her. Keep in mind she is a contralto, so at the lowest end of the female voice, but with phenomenal range: D flat 3 to B flat 5. You should watch a few other clips- for her polyphonics and multiphonics, yodeling skills, ability to belt, and so on. An amazing singer. Songs to check her out: Rechenka, Wicked Game, Human, Jodel Time (when she was 13!).

Thank you for your analysis and reaction to Diana's performance Diana has been singing from the age of five and as far as l know she also has professional lessons from a vocal coach I would have to say, Diana has complete control over her contralto/polyphonic voice and in no way sounds like the current crop of female singer's today So refreshing 😀

😆😆😆😆 If you listen to her sing at her concerts, she is singing with polyphonics; she sounds exactly the same. Diana is a mystery to most, which is why people are attracted to her voice. There is post-production that is disappointing but there is nothing fake or added with Diana. She is her own auto-tune! The space she has anatomically let's her resonators create a distinct sound, it is not something that can be imitated (voice coaches have tried). You will understand and get it as you listen to her more 🙂 I have not read any comments yet...just ignore the really defensive people because people really like Diana and sometimes they tend to not understand, it is difficult to know what Diana is doing because they have not heard this kind of voice before. Peace & Love, Brother

Cheers for commenting mate, I'm enjoying all the comments I'm getting so far. As for the defensive ones I'm finding it interesting how some of my Russian viewers seem to be picking up a condescending vibe from my video, and I'm wondering if that might be a language barrier or some sort of cultural difference because I'm not aware that I've said anything negative or along those kind of lines at all. Makes me wonder how my mannerisms might be coming across to non English speakers, but I don't take it personally. And yeah I'm really enjoying hearing Diana's voice, it makes me want to explore some darker sounds in my own singing. Even in rawer performing environments she still has that kind of sound and it's is pretty cool to see that it's not been embellished too much for TV. She has a unique voice for sure. Peace and love mate. Take care.

Never said she did. Pretty sure I was very clear that I've checked out some other performances of hers and that her tone is right in that ballpark in every one of them. There's definitely double tracking, and I'm not hearing polyphony in any sense of the term that I've seen described. I could be completely wrong in my definition though, so I'm looking forward to exploring it with more reactions to her singing soon. Agreed, she's got an incredibly unique voice.

Diana Ankudinova is considered like Dimash's little sister. Both are brilliant and talented artists. Started their passion for music when they were very younger. I love her. Her unique and particular voice really captivated me. She Is a brave survivor from abuse suffered when She was just a child. Music become her shelter and helped her explore her skills with her voice. She writes her own songs. When I hear her sings..She conveys all feelings. One of reasons Why I love her singing it's cos covers feels like if were different songs. They never sound like the original ( this Is exactly what I expect in a cover) . U must to watch her channel. And listening her version of wicked games. Phenomenal! Thanks for reactioning her. Greetings !

I'm getting where that comparison is coming from. They must have some similar influences cause there are elements in their singing that seem reminiscent of each other in spite of how different their tone and styles are. I've read some of her backstory and it's tragic, and I'm sure we can see some of the impact of it in her performing as she is rather intense with how strongly she emotes while singing on stage for such a young girl. Will definitely give her channel a look, I'm sure there's lots of good stuff there. Cheers for watching my reaction to her.

Greetings from Scotland! I'm not going to dispute your observations but I will give you a little background on this phenomenal singer's life - so far! Diana is 19yo currently but I've been following her since she was around 13yo. Diana is a natural Dramatic Contralto so the lower registers are her comfort zone but she now has around a 4 octave range and it's increasing. She also naturally sings with polyphonic overtones so it sounds like many voices at the same time! HOW you ask? Please continue reading............ Diana's birthmother had multiple miscarriages but when Diana came along, she seemed to hate her. She verbally and physically abused her, trying to drown her, strangle and belittle her. It all culminated when (at 3yo) she dragged her to a bus stop with a broken collarbone and abandoned her, saying "Survive if you can" A passing relative took her in but because she cried constantly (naturally with a broken collarbone) she took her to the authorities who removed Diana from her birthmothers care and placed her in an orphanage. For almost 2 years Diana never gave up hope and she knew that she was meant for something better. (This story is in her Wikipedia entry) Finally her new mother (Irina Ponik, who worked as a masseuse there occasionally) Signed her adoption papers and took her home. She vowed to pay Irina back for her kindness. Irina had a real struggle because Diana had obviously been badly affected by the experiences and at 5yo, she had a very bad stammer. It was recommended that she be taken for singing lessons to help this and immediately it was recognised that Diana had perfect pitch and an excellent ear for music and songs. 1 year later, at 6yo, Diana was performing solo on stage! She is a rapid learner! This young unique phenomenon sang everywhere and anywhere she could, working constantly to earn money for the family who rescued her. At 13yo she held her 1st solo concert and one of the songs she sang was in a very rare Sephardic Jewish/Spanish dialect, a song called "Me Voy" (I'm leaving) with a power and emotional commitment that staggers belief! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pp_PmHVvZc6HnJI (She has already sung in *7 languages, Russian, English, French, Spanish, German, Ukrainian and Arabic!!!*) She was already winning every contest in Russia and other countries that she could get to. Then at 14yo Diana took part in an amazing Russian project "You are Super" for abandoned/disadvantaged children (because Diana spent time in an orphanage) The 1st song she performed shocked the judges and audience so much, it went viral. February 10, 2018 "Dernière Danse" in French kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqexeot4n8Z3rqs The rest, as they say, is now history!.............

Thank you for sharing, though it's obviously a very sad story to read about. That kind of trauma from what I've seen tends to age children and make them come across as really mature for their age because of having to process that kind of horrific experience. I'm sure we can see elements of that in Diana's stage presence, as she seems incredibly intense while performing for such a young girl in a couple of her earlier clips that I've been checking out. It's horrible that she's been through such an ordeal and that she has that kind of pain to draw on, but it does give an amazing depth to her performances I must say. I hope she's in a good place now mentally and physically. She's a very gifted singer and I look forward to seeing how she grows as she I'm sure she'll only improve with time.

Hi and thx for your reaction ! People love to say Diana has no backing vocals behind and it's only polyphony. Which is (most of the time) true. But not during this contest. She has 2 pple, a man and a woman, to help her (contrary to the "You Are Super !" contest). I don't make up a story : she openly said it in an interview. On the other hand, her new vocal coach at this time trained her in her upper range, which she was not used to. In my mind, that’s maybe why she has the woman voice backing with her when she slides up, like a springboard you know, and she’s on her own after that, when she's already hit her upper range. 🤗

Hi there, thanks for your comment. Yeah I definitely hear a couple of backing voices or something like that going on, not including some of the choir type sounds in the background. I'd love to see some performances of hers where she does utilise polyphony, as I'm sure it's a very different sound and I'd like to see it in action to know how singers use it in the context of a song. I don't get why they'd have a unison here personally, as Diana's voice was perfectly capable of cutting through and sounding perfectly good on its own to my ears and to me it just seemed to distract from her own performance. Mid ranges are always the trickiest areas to navigate even for most professional singers though, so you could be right and maybe they had it there as insurance if she was new to it. I honestly couldn't guess though with how little I've listened to her voice so far. Thanks very much again for commenting.

This much is nothing wait to hear her start hitting the yodels and the really crazy sounds😄 She can go lower and higher, you meant to say C3 at the lowest not C2, that is the range she covered in this song is indeed C3 to Bb5, but she has gone down to F2 before, her range is definitely 4 octaves from what i heard of her personally but her vocal coach has said that her range is four and a half octaves (i do not know the actual notes she never mentioned them) and it is growing since she still is only 19 (she was 18 when she sang can't help falling in love.).

Yes, it was a show, but not an ordinary show. In it, professional popular singers, each of whom has a wide fan audience, compete on the same stage. They give scores to each participant separately (except themselves) from 1 to 9 without the right to repeat. All participants are professionals and everyone is interested in winning. Winning such a show on the central channel allows you to raise the singer's rating even higher than he was before the show. This is a live performance and all kinds of overdubs, except for backing vocals, and sound effects won't work on it. Other participants will be against it, since this is a show of performers, not sound engineers.

The polyphony in Diana's voice is clearly audible in slow motion. This is clearly not a manipulation of language. If you listen carefully, you can hear the sound vibrating at a high frequency, when a low note alternates with a high one at a very high speed, which creates the effect of sounding two voices at the same time. By the way, the transition from a low octave to a high one also does not occur due to lowering or raising the larynx. Although it is, but not to the extent that all people have. Something about Diana is not arranged like that of ordinary mortals. She has unique ligaments and a huge laryngeal chamber, which together allows her to extract unearthly sounds. That's what I think. I am not an expert in this field and this is my private opinion. Perhaps it is erroneous. But surely, Diana's voice is a subject for scientific research.

yes, in that one short segment that you listened to, there was a voice in the chorus (the only part of the song where there were non-obvious backup voices...the next section the chorus is singing something totally different). She does bring in amazing harmonics, have seen computer analytics of her voice that show the harmonics, it is more obvious in the last section of the song, and she does not lean on that "talent" very much in this performance....it is more obvious in other songs/performances.

From what I've seen so far (which admittedly isn't much,) I'm not hearing obvious polyphonics in her singing, and I'm wondering if people are saying that simply because she has a very unique tone and makes use of a much more open throat for the most part than the average singer and it emphasises certain harmonics more than we're used to hearing. I'll be diving a bit deeper into it as I think she's a fascinating singer that makes very effective use of a lot of unconventional techniques, and it's beautiful to listen to and inspiring for me in regards to wanting to develop my own singing and I definitely want to learn more.

I think perhaps the issue is with your definition of "polyphonic". If you listen to her sing in her lowest register for example, C3/F3, she can simultaneously mix in strongly frequencies between 1 and 2KHz. This gives her a very unique sound. I think that this effect is more pronounced in Wicked Game than this song.
@Grays_Plays
@Grays_Plays Жыл бұрын
Yeah could be for sure. I'm thinking of the comparatively extreme demonstrations I've seen where there are 2 very distinct pitches that are able to be controlled independently of each other, which I'm not really seeing here to the same degree (or in other performances I've seen.) I'm also thinking of singers that are capable of producing 2 notes at the vocal fold level at the same time, kind of like David Lee Roth with his signature whistle voice type scream. With Diana it's probably something comparatively more subtle that I'm overlooking by getting caught up in terminology, as I do recognize some deliberate frequency manipulation going on with her singing, I just don't know enough about it technically to be on board with the term polyphonic based on what I've seen so far. She definitely has a very unique sound though and she clearly can dial it in at will, which I find really cool to listen to. I'll definitely have to give Wicked Game a look.

I can't help it, years of being forced to endure reality TV shows that posed as talent competitions and then seeing legions of reaction videos that seemed to utilise the same formula has left me a bit jaded as far as overt emotional expression towards music goes in my own reaction videos. I take nothing away from Diana's singing here though, it was well worth a standing ovation and I'm very glad that not everyone in the world feels the way I do when witnessing televised displays of emotion in response to music. Be mindful of trying to gatekeep music though just because there are those that don't relate to it in the exact way you do. Differences in outlook and opinion are what keep the world interesting in my opinion, and everyone's entitled to theirs.

I'm sure you're not the only one, my lack of physicality in expressing the awe I feel when watching amazing singers definitely rubs some viewers the wrong way (to put it mildly, haha.) I'm sure there's a bit of a language barrier as well and that a lot of my intent doesn't come across the right way to some viewers because of how I tend to express my thoughts and feelings verbally rather than emotionally, but to be very clear I in no way attempt to diminish the singers that I'm listening to by analysing what they're doing. For me there's nothing more fun than trying to better my skills by listening to singers that are obviously drastically better than me and trying to figure out how they technically make the sounds that they can make, and how they use those technical skills in order to express themselves artistically, and I love sharing that with others through these reaction videos. I don't understand how some viewers interpret something negative from that, but I'm thrilled to have the chance to discuss our different perspectives. I've checked out quite a few of the links to Diana's other work that some viewers have been kind enough to share with me and I'm loving what I'm hearing. Will definitely have to do more reactions as I'm really enjoying discussing her voice with people. Thanks very much for commenting. Yes, there is a backing track in this piece to accentuate her natural ability. However, she does have the unique ability to ring out the upper overtones of the primary note. This really makes it sound like she is singing two notes at the same time. If you listen to this piece many times, and pick it apart like a total nerd, you can distinguish between the backing track from other voices, and the upper overtones ringing in her own voice. This recording is obviously very produced, and possibly manipulated. However, it is fairly easy to find unprofessional, unproduced, home video type recordings of her, where these upper overtones can still be clearly heard, even in poor quality recordings. I'm not exactly sure how she does it, but I have seen some videos of doctors and vocal experts speculating on the possibility of her having a unique anatomy. An unusually large pharynx that can easily produce the rich and dark timbre of her voice without unnatural pharyngeal stretching, as well as the ring in the upper overtones without tongue and lip manipulation. I would love to hear her live, without amplification. This would certainly clear up the controversy about her polyphonic singing, as well as the discussion over her being a true dramatic contralto. These controversies aside, she is obviously an incredibly rare and talented voice.
@Grays_Plays
@Grays_Plays 8 ай бұрын
She's got a really low larynx when she sings compared to the overwhelming majority of female singers I've heard, and it's interesting cause she doesn't really have that quality to her voice when speaks. Makes me think it's a deliberate stylistic choice that she utilities rather than a factor of unique anatomy (everyone's is unique though to be fair.) That low larynx makes some interesting frequencies pop out when she twangs to get note clarity and I reckon that probably accounts for the unique overtones we hear. I'd be very interested to know if that was a conscious decision or if it's just how she habitually tends to sing anyway, but either way it's a cool sound for sure. And yeah, it occurs to me that post production could be what's going on here for some of the sounds that I'm hearing as there are definitely bits where it's not just one lone voice singing the main melody, but I've heard rawer recordings of her and the same basic quality that most people are picking up on is definitely there. And I agree, live without amplification is the best way to objectively tell what's going on. Everything in the recording chain always has an impact on the end vocal sound in any other setting. Completely agree though, obviously an incredibly unique voice. Cheers for commenting.

That's the problem with simple internet searches, they quite often give back simple results even when the answers you're looking for aren't so simple. And I'll trust my ears more than the opinions of random internet experts (or idiots,) any day of the week. Her voice does not fit within the scope of any of the definitions of vocal polyphony that I've seen. Call it my own terminology preference if you like, but it is what it is. You can argue for sure that there's several prominent formants going on, certainly when compared with most singers, but I've not heard 2 distinct pitches at any point in this performance and the enthusiasm a lot of commenters seem to be trying to convince to the contrary with in spite of not being able to point out specific examples when asked leads me to thinking that it's merely an internet myth. She sounded awesome regardless of what label you wanna put on her voice though. I don't see an issue there even if it does ruffle some people's feathers to say so.

There is a graphic spectral analysis of Diana, during this performance. If you look at the part that you had questions about (starting at 1:19), there are multiple overtones. Those different tones match almost perfectly. I think that it would be impossible to blend in a second voice so well. Yet, the matches are not waveform perfect. I don't claim any expertise, but I would guess that an electronically reproduced set of tones would match exactly. Thanks for your attention to Diana! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJazaXdtg7majqM

It is a second voice synchronized in post production. In addition, they are in the same key, which nullifies the possibility that it is overtone singing. That's not how it works. It is striking how this belief has expanded to become a "truth" among fans, despite not having any professional support behind it.

@@FYT Hi, I have so many thoughts, on this subject, that it seems a daunting task to express a fraction of them. Firstly, my poor ears have suffered a lot of abuse, over these years. I might simply be unable to hear what others are talking about. Secondly, I might not understand what is being discussed. It's not as if a person can hold up a sound, point at it - as if it was a physical object, and say: "I'm talking about this." If people are discussing what I think they are, I simply don't hear anything unusual. Not only have I heard, what I think is the same "effect", in amateur recordings from Diana's childhood, but I also hear "this" in other people. Maybe it's possible that the recording engineer did something to amplify this effect? If so, my question would be: "why?" What purpose does it serve? Unless I see the engineer or Diana say otherwise, I can't help but see this as ordinary.

@@franks9432 What happens is what follows: A youtuber uploaded a video trying to explain why Diana sounds special, and attributed it to a special use of harmonics in the voice. Unfortunately, this youtuber does not have advanced studies in sound science or anything related, he only gave vague and sensational information for the simple fact of creating content for his channel. He basically explained nothing. Fans have since adopted this false or misconstrued information as proof that Diana uses a polyphonic voice and techniques to produce special overtones. This was quickly accepted, since it endows his favorite artist with something mystical and special. However, as you can see on my channel, I am a sound engineer who is an expert in sound analysis and vocal technique, and I have explained many times that there is no use of polyphony in Diana's voice. In fact, her technique is based on reducing the harmonic production, only accentuating the low harmonics, which is the complete opposite of what people claim happens. Polyphony and overtones is not something magical, it is a concrete sound phenomenon, studied for decades, understood and 100% measurable through digital analysis. Unfortunately, no explanation is enough for some.

@@FYT First, I want to tell you that I appreciate the fact that you are willing to provide the benefit of your expertise, for free. You certainly aren't getting rich from this discussion. Yes, people love to use big, impressive words. Very often, they won't check the definitions, for themselves. I remember your video! I, now, went back and rewatched it. No offense is intended, but I still have the same complaint as when I first watched it. At the specific point in question, you said that we can see evidence of an added "chorus" (or words to that effect). Of course, I don't have any experience in reading such displays. But, to my eyes, I don't see anything very different from other places, during the performance, where the "effect" is not heard. There are more lines, but their appearance is similar, to my eyes. I think that the only way for this controversy to be resolved, to my satisfaction, would be to hear only the live microphone feed.

@@franks9432 I don't remember how good it looked on the video, and I understand that it's not easy for most people to know what each thing means. However, despite the fact that both voices are in the same key, which should make it obvious that they are two different people, in sections one voice has vibrato and the other does not. Then I realized that in the previous sentence it is actually much clearer how there are two overlapping voice signals. The problem is that the voices are tuned in post-production, like 99% of televised productions, and this means that both voices are perfectly in sync in the same key. This makes it very confusing and difficult to differentiate one voice from another in the spectrum, but there are more than enough samples that are unmistakable in professional eyes. Needless to say, this duplicity of choirs is something basic in music production, so in that video I didn't pay too much attention to it because I found it as a detail that should be obvious. The fact that it was assumed to be some kind of polyphony left me stunned when I heard it.
