I bought this 1985 Porsche 928S in Spain. As I've explained in the first episode of this series, she had been taken from the road in the mid nineties when her owner was involved in law suits following a construction scandal. Twenty years had passed when she returned to the limelight. She's a solid car with no rust, but time took its toll and many systems and especially her fragile electrics need restoration. I'm giving it to her and in a couple of films she'll be a great V8-Porsche ready for a second life.

Your work is to such an exceptional standard that I can't believe I would ever make a suggestion... but here it is, get an 'Engineer' branded crimping tool. So much better and easier than crimping connector pins with normal pliers! Love your channel.

I agree or get the cheaper chinese Iwiss crimpers. Would also allow you not to use the shrink/solder wire splicers but actually crimped ones with a proper heatshrink. 🙂
@MrBlaadieblaa

Totally right. Soldered connections are to be avoided at all cost in environments with mechanical stresses like vibration and bending. The wire strands will fatigue and break where the solder ends as this is a stress concentration point (going from stiff to flexible). Always use crimp connectors with the proper crimping tool. Finish with a (waterproof) shrink sleeve. Buying a good crimping tool is an investment you'll never regret.

Guys, thanks for commenting. I’m really grateful for recommendations when it comes to electrical systems, as I’m not on good terms with electrons. Funny enough, in the meantime two (!) viewers have gifted me a crimping tool and I’m looking forward to using them. More in the next films …

I'm so glad I found this channel. As an automotive engineer myself, I like some meticulous attention to detail. I enjoy seeing someone doing work and finishing tasks. I seem to always start a task and "finish" it, only to find myself finishing it some more at a later date. Having improvement ideas and hating entropy. Also, I am so glad to see you building your workshop. As you can imagine, this is a hidden dream of mine, too. I'm about 35 now and have been dreaming about one for just 5 years. I hope I'll get there too.

I believe that the car painters that performed your mirror work went to the same school that the car painters/repairers that performed the wiring work on my Alfa 156 V6 - which had in the past, under a previous owner, had suffered a wiring fire at the rear. In short, atrocious work in 'splicing in' a replacement portion of the wiring loom that consisted of about 20 wires - that in the end unleashed a host of gremlins that required addtional 'jumper wires' (of course all coloured black) to be 'spliced in' at different points of the wring harness. However, they were at least able to perform the circa 20+ twisted cable connections - i.e. no crimping or soldering 'here' - using the same colours - so I can conclude that the painters/repairers were at the very least not colour blind. Like you, I hope they turn up the heat to maximum when they finally make it to their final resting place in hell.

I can feel your pain, mate. I hope you don’t mind me saying that it’s kind of good to read that for you know a problem shared is a problem halved. I had a V6 156 Sportwagon myself, silver exterior, saddle leather momo interior. If I had the chance to buy it back, I would.

@@GreasyFingers The Alfa 156 V6 has certainly created some headaches, and it's somewhat consoling when others have encountered similar poor workmanship issues on their cars. In my case, all is forgiven when I hear the delightful and sonorous Busso V6 engine in full flight. I'm so smitten that I'm now in a 'chase' to find an unmolestered version of its bigger brother - the Alfa 156 GTA - which given its age is somewhat challenging. As in your case, I'd dearly love a 156 GTA Sportswagon - however these were not imported to Australia - so a sedan will have to do.

The advert says “one careful owner” what they don’t say is about the other rather less careful owner. I took my lock barrels out to repaint the bezels which were a bit moth eaten. Etch primer and two pack Matt epoxy paint, then stoved at 110C gives a harder finish.

Fabulous as usual, this just confirms my suspicions regarding modern classic cars , the electrical engineering in them is just too complicated for me to handle. I Love the 928 but it’s way past my technical expertise 😳

You’re right, electrically, it’s about the most complex car ever built before the age of CAN bus and ECU‘s. There’s a single wire to every electrical sink … I’m seeing it a bit as a learning object myself. I’m thinking that if I survive this, no electric problem in any car will ever make me anxious again. Shock therapy!

Thanks, John. Wow, this little list of cars is electrifying. I love the purity of the 70ies 928 design. My magic words are hellblau metallic, kork interior and Paschas all over. How’s yours? No need to comment on a 69 Spider. Jethro had a number of green ones going through his work shop recently, I loved them all.

@@GreasyFingers my ‘79 was originally tobacco brown metallic over cork interior. Seats had the beige vertical stripe cloth inserts but now tan vinyl. Sadly the previous owner painted it (BADLY!) in metallic black so I need to repaint the car back to its original colour. Interior will be cork with brown/tan pascha. I believe it was sold new in Munich before being imported to the US in the ‘80’s as I found a sticker from a Munich tennis club under the lid of the rear glovebox. No sunroof. Single door mirror. 5 speed. Love that clean look. Also have an ‘85 Euro S engine to go into it for a few more ponies :-)

I've owned 4 porsche's, and I regret selling my 86 928S the most. A word of caution: check the rubber grommet that feeds the cable thru the transmission tunnel to the O2 sensor. It sits directly above the catalytic converter and gets dried out. It's also an infused wire, and can start an electrical fire if it shorts out. Ask me how I know.😢
@GreasyFingers

Thanks for commenting, Ken! I think there’s just one way to overcome the loss of four Porsches, get a fifth one. Thanks for the word of caution! I guess I haven’t even looked whether my car has a catalytic converter, but likely, 85 in Spain, she doesn’t.

@@GreasyFingers I'm familiar with the name but not that particular model. The twin shocks on the rear and the motor configuration has me baffled. I vaguely remember reading about 50cc Zundapps with 15 speed transmissions competing in the ISDT from years ago. If i remember, they had a serious backing from the manufacturer in competition. Will we possibly see any content with it featured? EDIT: After a little Googling, i'm guessing that the bike is an early 60's 'Combinette' model? It appears in great shape!

Can you give me your thoughts on car lifts. Specifically your single post lift. I’ve been intrigued with your many uses of the lift. How is the stability and portability. Is it difficult to properly place the lift/arms? Regards
@GreasyFingers
@GreasyFingers 4 ай бұрын
Hi Michael. The undercarriage of the lift stands rather tall which is no problem for my Alfa‘s but for very low Porsches it requires some back and forth to not hit anything when placing the lift under the car. Portability is great. It’s possible to move the car around when it’s on the lift. Stability is not great but okay. The one big advantage is that nothing‘s in your way at the side where the post is not. I’d buy it again.
