This Will Enable me to Optimize my Creative Production to Showcase Journeys of Various Forms of Life..
Armed with his 1913 Bradshaw’s Guide, Michael Portillo crosses the south east of Australia from the seat of government in Canberra to the multi-ethnic heart of its second largest city, Melbourne.
Floating above Canberra in a hot air balloon, Michael sees how Australia’s Bush Capital was planned in the early 20th century. He discovers the story behind the Ashes at the hallowed Melbourne Cricket Ground and cheers for England in the last 20 20 match of the season. Hard on the heels of the infamous outlaw Ned Kelly, Michael enjoys a special screening of the world’s first feature film, made in 1906, which tells of his exploits. At the beautiful former home of superstar soprano, Dame Nellie Melba, Michael discovers her origins and her global fame and listens to one of her best-known songs.
The Puffing Billy narrow gauge steam railway, built in 1900, takes Michael through the rainforest of the Dandenong mountains across a spectacular trestle bridge. Michael meets some of the 1,000 volunteers who keep the line in service.
Michael finishes at Birregurra, 80 miles west of Melbourne, on a 500-acre sheep farm, which was founded by British settlers from Devon during the 1840s. Here, he discovers the story of Australia told in a single family - and learns how to shear a sheep.

Dave Christiann drive from Sydney to Melbourne down the east coast... if you’ve never done it visit the towns on the way... some of the prettiest driving. Make sure you detour via Fitzroy Falls... about the nicest view I have seen in anywhere in Australia. I use to fly Melbourne-Sydney 3 times a week... and driving is still the best way to do it... if you’ve never been to Melbourne, you are really missing out. Post COVID you MUST do this.

Canberra is Half a Mile High and amid the The Great Dividing Range, so altitude and inland low humidity equals temperature loss. Therefore Canberra is the coldest City in Australia by far, but also one of the hottest in Summer. Called 'continental effect on Climate' for those ignorant of geographical factors such as altitude lapse rate. ps. Averge Income is highest in Aussie due to the fact that most are Public Servants whose salaries are very good, and their political allegiance is invariably The Australian Labor Party.
@rskb1957
@rskb1957 4 жыл бұрын
@@letsseeif Yes, something I do remember from secondary school geography lesson. I was at university in Armidale which is at an altitude of over a 1,000 metres on the Northern tablelands. It was in a Summer rainfall zone with low rainfall in Winter. Altitude plus clear night skies resulted in frost from late Autumn to Early Spring on a nightly basis. Sometimes even snowed if there was moisture. Even the condensation on the inside of the windows would freeze at night. And in the 1970s, central heating was unknown in all but institutional buildings. (And my aunt was at school at CEGGS in Canberra during the war).

Robert King-Brown. Of course people from Canberra are boring because they are mostly Civil Servants working in an isolated city built about 1927 because Sydney became jealous that Melbourne was the Capital of Australia. So they had a competition for a new capital city which is supposed to half way between the 2 cities. Only problem is the government is far away from the normal folks, leading to them being out of touch with the everyday person. Being public servants they are very well paid and tend to be left wingers even when the Conservative government is in charge like at present.

Little-known fact about the MCG. Whilst it can easily hold 100,000 people... you won’t find that at a cricket match... AFL footy you’ll get that easily (biggest attendance for sport was 121,000) However Little known fact is the largest crowd at the MCG was never sporting-related.. but a 130,000 in 1959 to hear religious speech by “Billy Graham” (Especially buzz are as Australians are not a deeply religious culture!)

In RP English accent some the vowl sounds are shortened. Most noticeable when they say things like "room" becomes "rom"

@@mdjcsmith That is incorrect. Large scale migration from those countries did not happen until after 1972. Nobody cared about a trickle of migrants but the flood that arrived after the White Australia Policy was removed via the backdoor was and remains most unwelcome. A referendum on the White Australia Policy was held a year or two before the 1972 election that brought the corrupt Whitlam government to power with an overwhelming result for keeping it. The Whitlam government then removed it and stated it had been part of their election platform. They lied, it was never made public before the election. Nobody will mention that Australia was made a multicultural country against the population's wishes today because of the huge backlash that will result from the media and the left in general.

@@dat581 White Australian Policy was implemented via a number of acts of parliament, so it would take just one act of parliament to reinforce or abolish it. Holding a referendum for this would be dereliction of duty and totally unnecessary in terms of cost. This fact was also obvious to Australian legislators, who conspicuously did not trigger a referendum between 1967 and 1973, making your pre-Whitlam referendum story exactly that, a story with no basis in reality. So, you don't know how the government works and you're also caught making shit up. Pray tell, why should we care about anything you say?

@@egemensentin I am old enough remember this period in Australia. It is hard to convey now the great s urge of pride I think everyone felt after waking up from the long sleep of the Menzies era. The place was so unbelievably bland and boring up till then, ruled by the "wowsers" (killjoys). After the Labor win of 1972, which was supported by many sectors of the populace the country was on the verge of great things. Even Rupert Murdoch supported the Labor government. Then he decided to try his hand at "King-making". The rest as they say is history. I do think @dat581 wants to read a little more into the period and try and understand the mood of the times, Vietnam was a deeply unpopular war and one of the first things achieved by the Whitlam government was to extricate the country from it. The was not the great disparity in incomes there is now and I think the country was a fairer place then, providing opportunities based on merit for people from all backgrounds to enter university and the professions. The corruption of the Whitlam government was in part from seeking to exploit the country's potential in the face of the Liberal/Country Party coalition that controlled the Senate and seeking every avenue to bring down the Labor government. It was driven by spite pure and simple. I think most people from the ranks of the professions and educated from which my father and grandfather were from were disgusted by what followed.
