Your Bass is also on a Stephan Eicher album from 1996 called 1000 vies. Pino told me during our communication that we had while Dan Lakin was building our 3 other Lakland 5's, they were the 34"scale 54-76 models that Pino and I had built in a lot of only 3, they were built special in mid 35" scale production, he got 2 and I got the 1. They were rare in so far as they were indeed 34" scale and had Alder bodies, And I got great "street cred." in Dan Lakins eyes when he told me that following one my discussions with Pino on which materials to go with for the bodies, he said to Dan, "give me whatever Joe (me) is getting"! To this day he's been just the coolest with me and I will always cherish our acquaintanceship.

Pino is just awesome. He’s fretless work in the 80s is incredible. I reckon I must have all the recordings he played on. “Woman in Chains” by Tears For Fears is essential listening.

Great lesson and interesting look into the mind of the genius of Pino and the notes he chooses to use. Exemplary musician!!!! I was hoping you could do the same kind of lesson for one of my other favorite, soulful, moody Pino fretless recordings...Sunset Grill. I really enjoy the tonality and the setting of a mood a fretless can bring to the table of a song!! It's absolutely beautiful and melancholy...when the right notes and chordal tones are brought together!! I always wanted to tackle these songs but I thought they were definitely beyond my paygrade...but now I'm very committed to learning these bass lines but more importantly the WHY these basslines sound so good together!! We can all copy and mimic a bass tone or bass line but to create lovely bass lines of your own is PRICELESS!! Thanks Dan!!!

Thanks, Alan. I think I’ll do another fretless songs lesson and I’ll check that song out.

It was Pino Palladinos fretless bass playing on Paul Young’s music in the 80’s that made me determined to play bass guitar especially fretless! Fretless bass is so unique and very versatile. Personally I have played fretless exclusively for years now but that’s just a personal thing for me because I prefer fretless. Whether I’m just simply playing straight eights really tight kind of rock style or whether it’s something more melodic Pino style where the fretless really sings especially on the higher notes. I’m completely addicted to it. I wouldn’t suggest everyone should only play fretless bass. I I learned first to play on a fretted bass and progressed from there. I’m not the greatest bass player but I enjoy playing. I started out learning classical violin then reluctantly gave that up but was already learning classical guitar. So that gave me some grounding but I quickly got bored because although I like classical guitar my heart was to play bass guitar. My ears naturally tuned into the sound of the bass from a very young age and I was hooked 😝 It’s true what you’re saying haha Pino Palladino has been blessed with ridiculously long fingers! My hands are tiny in comparison So I have to move around a lot more. So yeah I can sympathise there hahahaha

@@OnlineBassCourses thanks for replying. TBH, I fell in love with fretless right from this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hn-8f2qXrc6tr6s . I think that shows what fretless can express... then I start to discover other genre and in the meantime i find some other masters that I like are fretless player. then I feel the urge to play it. Hope I could show you a video of me playing someday.

Really nice work! I believe the lick at 8:23 was actually done with and open string-moving your hand down closer to the nut in the middle of the lick. It’s a C minor form if memory serves me correctly, including the open G string. Try it. Makes a spot on emulation. If not, oh well. Cheers! 👍

Thanks, great stuff! Can I suggest a content idea? Rounds v flats v tapes has been covered quite a bit, but how about different gauges on a (4 string) fretless and how they affect tone , tension, playabilty etc?

Thanks Brad. That's a great idea and would make an excellent video. I'll put it on the list.

Are there any specific eq settings to get that throaty vocal sort of tone from the bass? I've been playing a fretless Pedulla with two Bartolini J pickups, and I cannot get that sound without losing the depth that is also there in that sound. Is the MM Pickup the secret there? Could it be the glass-hard coating on my fingerboard that makes it a little too bright and buzzy for that song? I've tried rolling off the treble all the way, and adjusting midrange (on the bass) both up and down. Any suggestions? Oh yeah, Cool Video! Thanks!
@OnlineBassCourses4 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much! What I like about this bass is precisely the lack of needing to tweak settings too much. I think the blend between pickups was equal here, but all EQ knobs were probably flat and I didn’t add any EQ or compression. It does sound like your bass naturally produces higher frequencies so that’s kind of what it is.
@OnlineBassCourses4 жыл бұрын
It could be the MM pickup. What about trying a plug-in or outboard EQ?
@prestachuck28674 жыл бұрын
@@OnlineBassCourses I might have to monkey with an eq pedal. My bass has a 3-band onboard, and I can get close by soloing the bridge pup and turning the mids and bass all the way down, but then it loses the fullness. Maybe I just need another bass to get there.
