Clearly if Jaco hadn't existed Pino would have been a very different player. When i first heard him - with Paul Young all those years ago - my first thought was 'Huh, another Jaco clone'. But then who could play fretless bass and not to some extent sound like Jaco (vis early Tony Levin, another of my all-time favourites)? And since then I've come to think that Pino, while obviously not the towering incomparable genius that Jaco was, is nevertheless a musical genius. Maybe if Jaco had had a touch of Pino's temperament - especially his apparent stability and humility - he might still be around today.

actually Jaco Pastorius stole it from Stravinsky's The Rite Of The Spring (it can be heard at the begining of his fretless solo on Weather Report's Havona or on Talk To Me's intro by Joni Mitchell, both released in '77) and then Pino probably stole it from Jaco. Stravinsky said "Lesser artists borrow, great artists steal" so this is perfect :) To be specific, Pino doesn't quote this theme note for note here but one of his fills at the end of TFF's Woman In Chains has the exact same phrasing. Anyway i'm probably one of Pino's biggest fans, he's definitely one of my heroes. I first noticed him on that TFF Seeds of Love album in the late 80s (but he already was all over the place with Paul Young for years) and from then i just kept running into his name when checking records credits out. this music genius' career spans over 4 decades, in pretty much any single musical genre; he truly is a living legend.

Greg F I don’t know if that’s what you are referring to but Pino says it is from Stravinsky. I don’t know what the chances are that both him and Jaco took it from Stravinsky and played it on bass, but Pino doesn’t mention Jaco (?) Ah, and that quote, or variations of it, is attributed to many; Stravinsky is attributed with it, but first 1986, while he is thought to have said ”a good composer does not imitate; he steals” in 1967. The earliest remark of this kind in print was made by W. H. Davenport Adams who wrote ”great poets imitate and improve, whereas small ones steal and spoil” in 1892, etc. ;)

If you love Pino's playing listen to Gary Numan's 'I, Assassin'. He his heavily featured and I understand it was where Paul Young's producer heard him and hired him for 'No Parlez'. There are some fantastic bass/melody lines that underpin and feature as the predominate instrument. According to a Pino interview 'I, Assassin' was the first time he played fretless seriously.
@synthonaplinth59809 жыл бұрын
Not to mention, Gary Numan gave Pino free reign to write the fretless bass parts for the songs, something that was very rare for Gary, apparently.
@PaulKingsleyHurst9 жыл бұрын
synth on a plinth Gary bought an acoustic fretless bass before writing 'I, Assassin' to further explore it's possibilties as a featured lead instrument after working with Mick Karn on 'Dance'. Numan did compose some of the basslines himself, and speaking to him about it he said he would suggest basic parts or vocalise them, but that he was amazed by what Pino came up with. Apparently Pino was on a retainer to do the next album 'Warriors' but it didn't happen as he ended up with Paul Young aswell as playing with Go West, Nick Heywood, Bill Sharpe and many more after.
