What a great bass player and such a sweet interviewer. One of the few musicians on the planet where you only have to hear a few notes - and you know who's playing... and who would dream that a some random women presenter would truly appreciate this subtleness in his style of playing. Clearly if Jaco hadn't existed Pino would have been a very different player. When i first heard him - with Paul Young all those years ago - my first thought was 'Huh, another Jaco clone'. But then who could play fretless bass and not to some extent sound like Jaco (vis early Tony Levin, another of my all-time favourites)? And since then I've come to think that Pino, while obviously not the towering incomparable genius that Jaco was, is nevertheless a musical genius. Maybe if Jaco had had a touch of Pino's temperament - especially his apparent stability and humility - he might still be around today.
