The year is 732. The Iberian Peninsula is dominated by the Umayyad Caliphate and is known as Al-Andalus. From there, the Caliph's men venture forth into France - conquering the south and raiding the north. A new governor of Al-Andalus, by the name of Abdul Rahman al-Ghafiqi, comes to power and leads a strong army on another massive raid. There are few that can oppose him, but between Poitiers and Tours, Charles Martel leads his well trained army and sets up a desperate defense.

Flash Point History has studying Islamic history changed your view on Islam? If so in what way?
@FlashPointHx
@FlashPointHx 4 жыл бұрын
@@ilyankhan6795 It has - both the positive and the negative. It would take me a few hours to go into detail, but in general; it united a marginalized people and gave them the drive to expand. During the early conquest, the Arabs recognized the importance of the cultural advances of some of the people they conquered. The Caliphate thus became the superhighway of technology exchange of its time. But like with most religions, divisions led to civil war and strife. Plus like with most major religions it carried a sense of xenophobia (intensified by its encounters with Christianity) and it carried a certain degree of elitism. I don't think this is unique to Islam - its a part of human nature. That said, understanding another's culture, religion, and society is the path to a more nurturing future of co-existence, however one should never go into this blindly or naively. Trust and cooperation is earned. I hope this answers your question

Just want you to know I had already read many accounts of this battle, but recently watched four different video versions and this was my #1/4. The timeline and movements within the battle itself seem to be nearly uniformly described, but your analysis of the historical context, leading events, and differing opinions on the relative impact and importance of the outcome, really add breadth and depth to the story. Flash Point History An interesting point is that in the Ummayads ways of war, there was no clear distinction between a large raid and a conquest : a very successful raid might well turn into full scale invasion if the conditions were very favourable. The raiding parties had a triple role : - Scouting, at the very least. - Raiding, in order to fund the war machine (i.e. pay the mercenaries) and the empire. - Sowing insecurity in the targeted realm. - If the opposition proves weak, aim at political centers and, with renforcements, conquer the realm. This pattern was quite obviously the case concerning the invasion of wisigothic kingdom.
@FlashPointHx
@FlashPointHx 4 жыл бұрын
I’m really glad that you posted here. This is the counter argument that I’ve come across while talking with others as well. As you said, this is what happened in the Iberian Peninsula. The only other major difference, however, is that the caliphate was nearing collapse. Had they won at the battle of Tours - Would they have been able to exploit their victory like they did in Spain?
@elbentos7803
@elbentos7803 4 жыл бұрын
Flash Point History One of the many causes of the Ummayad fall was the great berber revolt, and one of the causes of the berber revolt was the economic losses and loss of employement opportunities (mercenaries), both consequences of the halt of the western expansion. Another important point in their demise is that Ummayad expansion stopped quite simultaneously in early 8th century on every frontlines : Their armies failed catastrophically in the North against Byzantium (the one and true prize of the time), were defeated by the chinese in the East (central Asia), and by the franks in the West (Toulouse, Tours, Berre river, Narbonne) : Here again we encounter the peculiar economic of the ummayad: conquest for plunder and taxing the dhimmi (that's why Ummayad didn't favored mass conversions to Islam). With expansions ground to halt, Ummayad economy and prestige suffered a lot. Therefore, I suppose these military defeats were the causes of the political troubles.
@FlashPointHx
@FlashPointHx 4 жыл бұрын
There was also the sense that the Umayyad Had become too vain and distant from the people. That they were not listening to everyone and only advancing their own agenda. Of course having multiple military defeats didn’t help the situation. And you’re right, as long as the conquest continued plunder would come in in the economy would be stable. Once the conquest had been stopped on multiple fronts then economic ruin was just around the corner.

@FlashPointHx
@FlashPointHx 4 жыл бұрын
From what I’ve read and looking back in retrospect, I think this battle only stopped a raid. I think the battle of Toulouse that happened in 721 was more significant in that it stopped a very large Islamic force. The raid of 732 in contrast, was meant to steal goods and get back to their base of operations before the winter came. Furthermore the caliphate was pretty much at the end of its logistical supply line. Internal divisions back in Damascus would also bring down the caliphate as well. So, even if they won at this battle I doubt they would’ve gotten very much further. However, as somebody has pointed out the conquest of Hispania began the same way. Overall, I think that the failure to take Constantinople was the true turning point in the Islamic conquest.

Not really. If the Muslims hadn't conquered Asturias, why would they be successful in Frankish lands? It was not a question of time to take Asturias bc it was densely populated by nobles that had retreated there from all over the peninsula and the geography favoured its defense. It has narrow valleys that would make even a large army and easy target. It would be like the Basque Country in Spain in terms of languages nowadays; it doesn't blend, but doesn't threaten. Same thing with the Ottomans attempting to take Vienna; if they hadn't really conquered and taken over the Romanian principalities-- that were vassal states, why would they take over the Habsburg capital? It's like doing well on a exam when you failed on the building tests and assignments.

Thanks for your beautiful (and balanced) video. The weakest points in the "simple raiding party" hypothesis is that the proponents have a very hard time explaining : - The presence of the wali (governor) of Al-Andalus at the head of "a small raiding party". - The mere size of the Ummayad army, able to wage (and win) a full battle against duke Odo, then plunder Bordeaux (a raid would have turned back home after this point), then fight (and lose) a second full scale battle against the frankish (austrasian + neustrian + aquitanian) army : all these successive operations required : 1) a large army and, 2) powerful logistics, both traits being characteristics of a large army, not a mere raiding party.

The chronicle of 754 states that Abd al-Rahman, after defeating Munnuz, an ally of Odo (or Eudo), wanted to defeat Eudo as well as to prevent him from attacking his northern provinces in Al Andalus. The chronicle basically says that he ventured out since his whole army was still standing around after the battle against Munnuz. Why exactly he moved further into frankish territory isnt known, but it is most likely because of the riches found in the churches of Poitiers and Tours. The Continuatio Fredegarii states that they destroyed and plundered the church of St. Hilarius in Poitiers, which speaks for that point. Also, Odo fled to Charles, giving Abd al-Rahman another cause for moving deeper into enemy territory. Gibbons and Creasys view on the battle are in my opinion highy overstating the significance of the battle. After all, the arabs werent annihilated at Tours, but still had enough men to raid entire cities and Villages on their way back.
@elbentos7803
@elbentos7803 4 жыл бұрын
SM 0015 You perfectly cited the 2 main contemporary sources for the battle : a christian hispanic source - the mozarabic chronicle of 754 (sorry, not 732 as I initialy wrote, confusing the date of the text and the battle) and a frankish one - the continuation of pseudo-fredegar. I agree that Poitiers/Tours is neither the largest battle of the early middle ages, nor that it was a decisive victory, and certainly not a "clash of civilisations" (more likely, a clash of ambitions or imperialism). What I criticized here is the opposite analysis that pretends it was just a somewhat big raid. Moreover, as I wrote elsewhere there's no clear distinction in Ummayad strategy between a very large raid and a conquest : raiders scout enemy territory, destabilize local authority, fund warfare, test enemy resilience and if the target appears weak, the raid may turn into a full scale conquest just like what happened in Hispania. The ultimate failure of Ummayad ambitions in the west was not just this one battle but more the string of defeats they suffered (Toulouse, Poitiers, Berre river, fall of Avignon, fall of Narbonne)...

I find it really hard to form a balanced opinion, given that the sources are scarse and for the most part pretty biased. The fact that we dont have any arabic sources further complicates things. I don't even think Poitiers counts as a reconquista battle, it's already (historically) a stretch to call Covadonga that. I think the real reconquista started in the 740's with the great berber revolt. And I agree with your second assessment, nothing suggests the Umayyads intended to annex Frankish lands, Narbonne which is their longest lived settlement was more an advanced post used as a springboard for raids than a proper part of Umayyad territory. The raids were simply too lucrative to ignore. Thanks for the video man and happy new year, still waiting for the Granada chapter (hint ;D)
@FlashPointHx

The problem is that the start of the Reconquista is a fiercely debated topic. I kind of agree - Covadonga is a bit of a stretch. But there is hardly a book out there that doesn't dare NOT mention this fight. Tours was important in that it is regarded as the 'turning point' - again I'm not convinced of this. Personally, I'd set the beginning of the Reconquista to 1085 when Alphonso VI retook Toledo. But that is my own simply humble opinion. As for Granada - its in the works. I'm learning a new software for it right now
@laenorvelaryon5835
@laenorvelaryon5835 4 жыл бұрын
@@FlashPointHx In my more humble opinion I think by 1085, the reconquista was well underway, accelerated by the fracture of the caliphate, but try to compare any historical map of the 730's Umayyad caliphate with another of the 750's emirate of Cordova and you'll notice Asturias clearly bounced back, there are no major battles here, just the distraction of the berber revolt allowed Asturias the breathing room it needed to expand, and the emirate was stabilised along the new borders. Most sources who "magnify" those battles are inspired by the beautification (or romantisation :/) of spanish history, like canonizing St. Pelagius and the "discovery" at this period of Santiago's relics that were used as a rallying cry. Whenever I read about these "convenient" events I tend be a bit sceptic. Sorry I also babble a lot. Love your work.

My aim is to get people who would otherwise be indifferent into history, while trying to keep the core content up to the level of a more seasoned historical person. There are many anachronistic terms that are used - and to be honest, I'm not the only one who uses this modality - in my videos. E.G.' @@QHawk7 yes except they weren't muslims and the people living there weren't christians, since religion plays the biggest part in the events titled the reconquista maybe that plays a big role in defining when it started and why. The reconquista is a war of religion far more than one of ethnicity. If you would define the reconquista by your logic, every single act of resistance by the natives against the Phoenicians, Romans and any external party would be considered part of the reconquista. Yet that is not how any historian or Spaniard(with knowledge of history) would define it. The reconquista starts to be te reconquista after part of "christian"(not all Visigoths or the whole population was christian at the time) "Spain" were conquered by muslim invaders that took permanent residence on "spanish" soil. That is the key of the reconquista, if there was no invasion followed by permanent settlement by muslims, the reconquista as we know(and define) it would simply not be there. Therefore one can conclude that, yes previous settlement by Arabs and Berbers plays a role in the history of the reconquista(because they helped shape the people that were conquered by the muslim invaders), but they did not play a defining role in the reconquista itself(which was a conflict between muslims and christians[though not all since there were chistians, muslims, jews etc. living in relative peace during the reign of muslims in "Spain"] seperated by so much time from the arrival of Phoenicians that their arrival on the peninsula had no direct effect at all. Same would go for the Romans if it wasn't for them being the main factor christianity that arrived in "Spain"). I hope this has given you some more insight into the events called the reconquista. If you find my explanation lacking in any way, please watch some more of the video's of Flash Point History or any documentary about the reconquista, those will definitly give you a better perspective on what the reconquista was than I can by just typing. Eventhough it is a topic glorified by propaganda, if you watch a few video's about it you'll be able to form an understanding of what it is and why it happened(and why it's called "Reconquista"). Now please don't be offended when I remark this, but I find it strange you know the fact about Phoenicians from the Levant arriving in Iberia way before the Romans(even knew it existed), but did not take any effort(an assumption based on what you said) to research what the reconquista actually is.

@mr.2083
@mr.2083 4 жыл бұрын
@@QHawk7 Nope, did not know that unitarian chistians arrived first before more commonly known versions of christianity. However that is pretty much irrelevant regarding this topic, since that doesn't matter for determining when the reconquista started and what it was(also unitarian christians do consider themselves christians[as is implied by the name] not muslims, it's muslims that consider them to be a sort of christian precursor of islam, keyword being christian, not islamic). Historians(and educated Spaniards, both probably having way more sourcematerial at hand then any of us) pretty unanimously agree when it started and why. So I don't see why you'd try to debate something already established by good arguments checked and found valid by the scientific community, people way more educated on the topic than both of us. That's compareable to going to a team of scientists who have been researching cancer all their academic life with ridiculous funding at their disposal, telling them they're wrong and olive oil is the magic cure. Ignoring already established and agreed upon facts. You'd know this and why it's useless to point at trivial facts if you had googled reconquista and done any proper research.
