A look at H.G. Wells and specifically his novel, The War of the Worlds and its influence on the future, and its initial intents.

First saw this 30 years ago (while channel surfing with DUCKMAN on the USA Network). Still freaks me out.

I cringe when someone asserts that, in the 1953 film, the Martians are "flying." Close watching tells us that is incorrect. The "legs," according to the scientist-hero of the movie, are actually made of magnetic flux (or some other kind of faux-scientific gibberish) thus supporting the machines, as they would be with mechanical legs of the original story. Indeed, the legs are seen briefly as the Martians first emerge from the initial pit; an effect abandoned for some reason (probably money and time).

The Learning Channel aired this series, back when TLC took the 'Learning' part seriously.

Perhaps the best novel ever...my favorite film based on this is the 1953 version (the plane was the Northrup YB-49 "Flying Wing"...only 15 were ever produced)

I didn't read the book, actually. Now. After having scene this (and kudos to Donald Sutherland wonderful narration), I truly WANT to read this classic!
