Modern cars are shapeless boxes in comparison to the curvaceous beautiful creations of the first half of the twentieth century. Old luxury cars, Rollers, Mercs, Jags etc are stunningly beautiful in comparison. Even cars available to the ordinary man/woman in the street, like the old style Citroen DS and many others were beautiful. Nowadays it's very difficult to tell one manufacturer from another because most cars are shapeless square boxes. Bring back the beauty of yesteryear!

I really enjoyed this program. I borrowed my bosses 76 ROLLS to chauffeur a young couple from their wedding to the reception as a gift. I was stunned by the ride and how well built it was, but a little dismayed by things that didn't work that I was asked to "look at" such as the passenger side front window. I took a cover off under the right dash to check for a broken wire to the door. I quickly put it back on. But what saddens me is how they loose value to such low mark. On e-Bay I find my favorite years '86-'90 with, for a RR, very low millage for $20,000 or less. I've been tempted. KL

My mother and father were married in the Sydney Catholic Cathedral in 1940. Dad was in the Australian Army waiting posting overseas with the 2/1 Batallion AIF. When they exited the Cathedral they were meet with 3 Rolls Royce wedding cars. People were wondering who the 'posh' people who were being married. My father was wearing his '2 bob a day killer' uniform. A lance corporal. NOT an officer! What the onlookers did not know was that all the cars were funeral cars. My mothers father was an undertaker and his employer supplied the cars for the day gratis!!

Michael Loach Yes, a myth I’m afraid, Arturo1 is quite correct. My Father worked with Henry Royce junior on the Merlin during the war, he had many tales to tell as you can imagine. Search “ Mallinson Birthday Spitfire” on You Tube and you will see him.

Here in America a lot of cars look same with no emotion as they drive by. Yet, I have the pleasure once in a great while , to see a Rolls Royce on the road. Everyone slows down to stare and admire this beautiful car. It does not matter who is behind a wheel of a Mercedes , Lexus or whatever. They know it stands for the ultimate in quality and luxury that very few of us gets to acquire.

This is the guiding principle of my life and certainly guided my decision on whether to buy a 2006 Aztec or a 2009 Toyota Echo. Great fun to watch the two branches of R-R develop over the decades. I was surprised that they said the Silver Ghost's fittings were nickel plated, not silver. One nit to pick - the Merlin was not named after the Arthurian magician, but after a river, as all Rolls-Royce aero engines were.

When you build a prestigious car that has limited sales you can move the price up if needed, its not like your customers can't afford it, charge the world for spare parts, the cars are lovely but they also appeal to a lower third dimensional aspiration to be better than others, to be above the rest.

The badge on the Rolls-Royce was changed from Red to Black not, as popularly believed to commemorate Henry Royce's death, but because Royce himself decided Black was aesthetically more appropriate. Some customers complained that the red badge often clashed with the colour of the car. The Prince of Wales was particularly outspoken on the subject.

GereDJ2 ...CORRECT, Another misconception was that the new Shadows had their bonnets welded shut because the engine was so well made it didn’t need servicing! They still needed their oil changed, water looked after etc. so it was another silly myth carried on over the years! A book was written about these false claims regarding Rolls-Royce!

As a kid I loved the Silver Cloud III-- a 25-year old car when I was that age. I was a weird kid. Now I drive a DeLorean. Still weird, I guess. I'm presuming I'm going to want the SCIII when I get older. I don't tend to get over old wants easily.

The only reason to want an SCIII, is that the V8 engine was improved over the original SCII two. The SCIII was a transition car to the Shadow but the lowering on the grille and the wings being devoid of the parking lights and the dual headlamps, threw off the original look of the Cloud! I wanted a cloud II because it had AC, ELECTRIC WINDOWS. While searching for a 1974 Cadillac Talisman, I ran across my 59 Cloud II, triple black with a “refitted” Cloud III engine officially done when the car was sent back to Crewe in England. When i took delivery of the car, the engine had a scant 14K miles on it so I had the best of the CloudII and Cloud III...Still have the car and all of the paperwork from Crewe to back up the work done while there. The original owner also had Crewe install a cubby door with matching Yale lock on the drivers side, sundym glass installed, new rubber door seals and a slew of other upgrades! my rear arm rest has the extremely rare stainless bar set installed inside of it, similar to the rear arm rest in my 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. . If one wishes to see my automatic mascot changing device invention, simply use the YT search with “modern plinth” input. I also own the only official copy of Lord Montague’s original WHISPERER mascot from the National Motoring Museum! BE SAFE😷😷😷

A few years ago I was in my Yukon on the 18 mile stretch between Florida City and Key Largo. It was Daytime but very few other vehicles were on the road. I was speeding about 65 and a RR Phantom came up behind me, paused a moment and effortlessly passed me and disappeared. I tried to catch him but my trusty mid size V8 had no chance. I pushed it but said no way. By then the Phantom was long gone. The torque that big BMW engine delivers to the big wheels on that “rolling work of art” is staggering!

Many years ago I was doing a valve job on a Model "J"Duesenberg when the owner of a good looking Rolls Royce convertible stopped by and when I told him what I was doing he said"I will never have to have that done to my Rolls".I told him the reason for that was is that the Rolls won't run fast enough to wear out.The Duesenberg was well known for thundering performance and 100 MPH in second gear was possibe.

Rolls-Royce is a great brand of exotic luxury cars. Although now owned by BMW, the cars of today are pretty special. Not a fan of the suicide doors but otherwise they are great cars. The Cullinan crossover is worth having. It is just as brilliant as the diamond it's named after.

Form should follow function. The big round lights and the square radiator were necessary due to the technology of the time. Today lights can be much smaller and produce more light. And while radiators basically work the same their technology has also evolved. If you've ever ridden in or driven a RR from the fifties or sixties you'd be surprised how under powered they were and the leg room was nothing to write home about.

@@michelbeauloye4269 I once had a 1957 French made car, and the sidelights / parking lights could be turned on for the left, the right or all four. My '83 Mercedes-Benz had the same arrangement. It's not a fault, it's a feature and might be required in some European country.

If it's got a German made BMW engine, it's not a genuine Rolls Royce. Duh. That goes for all English auto makers. If it's got a German made engine, it's a fake (Not that I don't love BMW, Audi, Porsche, etc.) What I'm saying is, if you put a small block Chevy engine in a Jaguar, it's no longer a genuine Jaguar. For example. Now, if you install a Corvair flat sux in a Porsche speedster....

Royces aim was to produce a well built car with great reliability. Prestige wasn't the objective but only a side effect of the cost of building such a car at the time. So, does anyone else think, that maybe a Honda is more of a 'Rolls-Royce' than any of the later cars that carry his name?

Peter Brown ...im not to the end of the video but in later years one could switch whichever side parking lamp on, independent of the other depending on which side of the street the PMC was parked, thus saving on battery drain.

Glad to read others agree the new style RR's have no style: imposing nearsighted blunt lumps. The air around them looks better than they do. I'm surprised RR with BMW has clung to its ugliness. BMW for itself, and for Mini-Cooper, usually styles well.

The P51 owes it's name to the Brita as.well as it's engine. The db 601 was the German equivalent. The battle of Britain numbers are inflated both in terms of number of aircraft and aircraft shot down the db 601 had the edge in its fuel injection. Ironically it was based on a RR kesterel

The problem is the definition of 'best'. In my experience the specifications and the product meeting that specification is the definition of quality. A good example is Rolex. A Rolex is a fine piece of jewelry, but adding gold and diamonds does not made it a quality watch. Accuracy, reliability, durability and useability are far more important. One does not drive a Rolls because it is the best transportation, one drives a Rolls because he can afford to.

Several blatant inaccuracies. 1/ The WW2 aero engine was not named Merlin after the wizard. It was named for the raptor, as were all RR piston aero engines. 2/ It wasn't mentioned that RR initially did not want to build jet engines, when they they started they did so by taking over Rover jet engine division after Rover had done the development work. Thus the 'move' into jet engines was done by corporate finangling, and not by their own graft as is implied in this video. 3/, 4/, 5/ etc... including those pointed out by others. P.S. I have never seen a long hood on a Rolls except perhaps the Corniche. But they do have long bonnets. (It is an English video about an English car).
