I live about 20 miles from here and it's best to keep this for the 'summer' months, not just because of visibility. A point to remember is this road can have ice (and heavy snow) on it from September through to as late as May/June. Also, the lightest of breezes on a sunny day at the bottom = blowing a gale at the top, like enough that you can't even stand on your own feet and have to turn around. The point where the weather always changes is at 8:20 in the video, where Katie turns left and through the top gate. What I'm saying is, take care up there.

Awesome! Beautiful scenery, beautiful bike, beautiful rider...doesn't get much better. Thanks so much for sharing this ride. I absolutely love your posts-ride commentary and the camera perspective is terrific. This is one of the best rides (climbs) that you have shown us. Well done my friend!

Scotland has a similar climb up a private paved road to a radar station at Lowther Hill in the Southern Uplands. The best ascent route is to climb from the village of Mennock via Wanlockhead and then up to the summit of Lowther Hill. Total ascent is 594m. Worth checking out if you're looking for alternatives! 😊

Another great effort Katie. Poles help navigation if road & countryside blanketed in snow. Sheep ... LOL down under we have to worry about kangaroos! I recommend hivis & lights on day & night riding in my channel ;)

Nice film - the metal markers are snow poles so the plough can follow the road when opening it out. Although it's only a public road for the first one to two km after that it's a private road. Cyclists can still ride it legally as it's a bridleway. Conditions get so bad the CAA have a snow cat to get upto the radar station in winter. Weather is always challenging - 9 months of winter 3 months of bad weather. The area is also home to the Helm - UK's only named wind.

Great advice, thanks! Definitely on my wish list of routes. I have walked over it and around the area, and stayed in the bothy over the top of nearby cross fell, but a ride up to the golf ball looks very tempting! The area has the feel of a mini-Cairngorms.

Your an absolute gem kid. Funny, quirky, inspiring, honest, with a down to earth persona that I defy anyone not to like. But, as we say in Scotland, you're a wee numpty, (no disrespect intended). You should always have lights. Not just for fog, but for other numpty's on the road who may not be paying attention. You've already given so much to so many people on here, and I'm sure I speak for everyone who watches your channel, we love having you around. God! I must sound like you're bloody dad 😂. Love the video though. The knee is taking its own sweet time to heal though 😉. Take care out there kid. As we also say in Scotland, "May the road rise up to meet you, and the wind be always on your back."

Of all the videos I've seen on Great Dun Fell that was so different again it's the way you film them and gave a different perspective of the climb and gradient. Shame it was foggy at the top.

Mountain Weather Information Service's Yorkshire Dales and North Pennines forecast is usually a good predictor of conditions. Different weather websites give a live feed from the Great Dun Fell weather station. The climate up there is sub artic!

I rode it for the first time this year and I had similar conditions as you. Now I'm addicted to it. Don't recommend riding 38x28 like I did. Bought some compact absolute black chainrings specially for it to give it another go in 2021. Now I just hope to have a clear day up there. Quality video thanks.

Good review, have enjoyed GDF a number of times it is every bit as awesome as it looks! One very important thing, although there's not a lot of cyclists there, when you're battling uphill head down it's easy to drift about the narrow road, so it's important to remember there could be others coming at you fast downhill
@bondbug734 жыл бұрын
Dramatic views and credible effort. I've cycled it. The road up looks fantastic on the last half. I wanted to have a go again, but this time on my 46T crank single speed with a specially fitted 24T just for this climb (for a laugh). Then flip the wheel around onto my usual 16T gear for decending. Sadly, the weather was icy up top back in mid March when I was last up there in the Lakes would have made it risky.

Yeah it’s a big one I have done this twice , 1st time it was also very poor visibility hence no view but 2nd time all clear and the view was life changing , I really recommend not wearing shorts up there 10 months if the year as seeing your own breath in July up top indicates how cold it is as it’s a tundra climate , I remember when Katie was caught out by the weather and had to get help from a van to save her it was rather scary

Gives you less than 1:1 ratio (0.85) or a 22.5 inch gear if you do use 34-40 Great if you can spin and use it. HR and cardiovascular system will be working harder which doesnt suit everyone but is more efficient.

There isn't one ! Shimano 105 is the best value proposition and you can get a good quality aluminium road bike with that for well under £1500 if you look hard enough. That is good enough unless you are at a very high level.
